You probably know the drill by now - come and join us and to talk about perfume. We're friendly and smell lovely.

Sorry, me again. I meant to say, I am bemused by the MG perfumes not working out. They launched to a massive fanfare, and I read about Plum - which was the first one - in a number of magazines, then made a point in finding it in Edinburgh as it was initially an exclusive to HN. I think she has a very loyal fanbase, and is highly acclaimed as a makeup artist. Did people just see them as a brand-stretch too far? How has Tillers’ Scent of a Dream gone down? I think it’s massively inferior to MG’s offerings, but perhaps fits better as a brand extension on a makeup range rather than a personal brand?

Judydreamsofhorses · 28/03/2018 22:06

Oh, and I bulk bought about 20 Plum candles last year - I think they went down to £8, then I had a 20% off code on top!

pestilentialboundary · 28/03/2018 22:33

Love the talk of what perfume bottles you could take a window out with. My offering is Brooks Black Fleece. The heavy bottle could take a widow out. Still waiting for the MG to arrive.

LibertyBlue · 28/03/2018 22:47

Grin to all the frantic FS purchasing. We’re going to clear the shelves of MG stock at this rate.

Judy I agree that MG is so much better than Tiller’s Chypre offering (interesting they both went with a retro style Chypre). Scent of a Dream is alright and it’s v different to the sea of PMs, but it does smell a bit cheap and doesn’t have the naturals and depth of MG. Also the marketing blurb was so wanky (and not in a tongue-in-cheek way) I was cringing while reading the dubious ‘notes’. Can you tell I’m not a CT fan?!

I’m in MG Plum this evening- it’s really lovely, but it’s setting off my asthma wheezes (I have a cold so that might not be helping) it must be the oakmoss irritating my lungs.

Thanks to Judy I’m off to google how I can get my mitts on some MG candles now Grin

MrsGruber · 28/03/2018 22:55

Entertained that scent bottle designs are inspiring a (fantasy) Perfumista crime wave Grin

Judy - so that's where all the candles went Hmm

Pest - what's Black Fleece like? And have you tried BB's Madison?

Grin to MG bottle stopper murder mystery! Am absolutely loving Fire, 3 hours in and I can smell leather, patchouli, incense and rose. Luckily not too much tuberose in it as not keen on that. Smells very grown up, in the same way as Lemon does if you see what I mean.

LibertyBlue · 28/03/2018 23:15

Yep, so looks like Judy bought all the candles! My Miller Harris candle should arrive from TK Maxx tomorrow so mustn’t be greedy (if it doesn’t break in transit).

Grin using bottles as murder weapons. Makes me think of the book/film ‘Perfume’. If you’re planning to use the MG stopper as a murder weapon, make sure it’s not your scent of the day! Apparently forensics can now use miniscule amounts of perfume to solve murders.

OneNightTimeMenaceStrikesBack · 28/03/2018 23:25

ahhh, I missed the MG Lemon/fire/plum! to be honest though, I shouldn't really be spending any more on perfume right now, i have bought 7 bottles in the last week!!

Ended up being scentless today, it was so wet and miserable out that nothing appealed to me enough to want to put it on

MrsGruber · 28/03/2018 23:26

Is there a novel plot here for one of us?

thiskittenbarks · 29/03/2018 01:23

I got MG Fire and took a chance on cherry too! I was trying to re-settle my teething DS and my bank card was downstairs so thought I wouldn't be able to complete the purchase before the code expired. And then, as if by magic, he settled with just a few minutes to 9pm! Meant to be surely? And if I don't like the perfumes at least I'll have 2 deadly weapons in the bedroom (incase of any intruders).

I'm not a fan of CT scent of a dream and also thought it smelled cheap and lacked depth, but I think they've done a great job marketing it. I like her make up and I wanted to like the perfume. A lot of perfumes that are really successful are just horrible imo.

UnnecessaryFennel · 29/03/2018 07:15

Loving the murder weapons idea, although not sure we should be specifically targeting bereaved women, pest, seems a bit harsh after what they've been through Grin Grin

I think I might wear Fire today in honour of pineapple's top-quality enabling last night!

I tried the Mancera Velvet Vanilla briefly last night. Too much tuberose and fruit for me I think, making it very sweet in a way I don't enjoy. Interesting to have that on one wrist and Plum on the other though - Plum is a far superior scent imo. Still lots of white flowers but much better handled, iyswim, and the oakmoss/patchouli gives it a much more 'grown-up', contrasting base.

pestilentialboundary · 29/03/2018 07:53

Blush The widow would have to be number one suspect. The exquisitely fragranced bludgeoned evidence would all point that way.

DD compared MG Plum to her extensive line up of poison bottles and is impressed. Can see the wingless snitch flying off in her direction.

As mentioned up thread Black Fleece is a sort of Eau de cologne meets oud thingy. Fresh citrus meets a rich slightly dark oriental. Just a touch of oud and the incense, saffron, tobacco and amber all creep in gently. Fairly unisex and not sweet at all. I think it is well executed. I'll have to send you a sample Mrs G. I am quite sure it will not be everybody's cup of tea.

LibertyBlue · 29/03/2018 08:16

SOTD is Penhaligon’s Iris Parma. I’m back in my blue (Iris) period. This was an eBay bargain and blind buy. It just smells ...clean and a bit boring so far. This is not the Iris I’m looking for.

BarbaraCartlandsFloofyCat · 29/03/2018 08:21

You guys ShockGrin loving all the profligate spending, plus the planning of Christmas in March? You truly are my people!

Also loving the MG enabling, these are absolute bargains at these prices. God knows why Charlotte Tilbury won this round, on paper I should have loved SOAD, but it was so synthetic on my skin, I find her lipsticks, whilst lovely shades, also feel the same. Maybe the general public just likes synthetic generally, it would seem to be the case looking at DCs social media

Pineapple I have sent you some Lemon btw but had to reuse a decant bottle, I scrubbed and scrubbed but worry there still may be a trace Blush The previous occupier was La Belle et L'Ocelot and it was stubborn.

I need a FB of La Belle btw. Count or anyone one have you trued any more Dali scents? Adore this one. Love it. I seem to be stuck in a rut of loving early 90s "heavy" perfumes. Chypres/orientals. Maybe the Obsession started it, sorry MrsR if this disease also infects you too now Smile

Sock you are a great aunt! Great Aunts are wonderful, how lucky you are!

Happy belated birthday fancy what lovely gifts! And a DH who listens, the best gift of all Grin

I'm actually having a week where lobbing heavy items through windows is extremely tempting. Honestly this year started so crappily that I thought it could only get better, but I was mistaken

Happy Easter break to all the educators amongst us, you deserve a great holiday especially if you teach my DS and Happy Easter generally to all perfumistas. Sorry if I'm too early, I never really understand Easter, which day is meant for cards and eggs etc. Last year I gave the DC their eggs on Good Friday. Catholic DH is horrified by me Grin

BarbaraCartlandsFloofyCat · 29/03/2018 08:22

Sorry it's Floofy btw, the Barbara Cartland thing inspired a name change. PS I showed that photo of her to DH and said "is this me?" And his reply?..."weellll, in theory"

In town yesterday I passed by the guerlain counter. Lovely lady gave my niece lots of samples 😁
Got chatting to her and apparently all guerlain perfumes have the same "base" (guerlinade??)
I had a "aha!" Moment no not Alan partridge
Maybe that's why I have issues with guerlain scents?
Is chanel the same?
Hmmm...
I resisted buying MG lemon last night and now have regrets oh the lament of what might have been
Wrt MG pricing...um...were they just overpriced?
4610 half price sotw is evil max which...well...sounds like it smells evil to me 🤢 so I'll be giving that a miss too.
It's pay day
I'm feeling grotty
I neeeeeeed a treat 😣

mrsreynolds · 29/03/2018 08:30

Oh floofy you are funny 🤣

Fear not...I was already infected with a love of heavy chypre/orientals but in true thread style you have rather become my enabler 🤣

I'm loving obsession - which I never thought I'd wear again!

I'm awaiting my PP order

Sadly we are now moving away from the right time of year for many of my faves so I'm on the look out for spring/summer scents....tricky for a non floral/green wearer like me!

I guess it'll be rive gauche and valentino poudre!

pestilentialboundary · 29/03/2018 08:37

Guerlinade article.

UnnecessaryFennel · 29/03/2018 08:40

Have added to my perfume expenditure spreadsheet with a heavy heart...and then nipped over to the Cos sale after reading the Parisienne threads and spent some more...Hmm

Right, time to get up!

mrsreynolds · 29/03/2018 08:48

Hmmm

Yet I love those scents! - except gum resin and animal - and they aren't used anymore!

(Baffled) 🤔

PerfumeIsAMessage · 29/03/2018 08:55

I think the MGs didn't sell well because whilst attempting to go for a stark "in your face" name, one word, one syllable etc etc, the name doesn't convey anything. No, I don't want to smell like a plum. Etc. People probably thought they were linear No Malone style soliflores, (solifruits??) which tend to be dismissed. I now realise why I loathed Fire though- it would have been the oud. One of my dear final year boys sat next to me yesterday and I said "euwwwwww what's that?" He looked at me in horror and said "It's Tom Ford" I said "it's got oud in it" He was most miffed as his girlfriend bought it for him, cue long, and rather bizarre conversation about rotting trees and the fur coat and no knickery of TF. Grin

I am not buying any perfume until coming to the UK in the summer. I need clothes, and I need to pay for my holiday.

Soyesterday was Ealing Green (cumin colleague in the afternoon "but I can't smell anything on you" Me, to myself "wish I could say the same about you mate")

mrsreynolds · 29/03/2018 09:01

Yes. The names aren't really helpful or evocative are they?
You don't need to go full on 4610 mad wrt names but something has to give an idea of the notes/base.
I suppose advertising helps in that way too?
You know by just looking at the opium add (for example) that it's not a PM floral 😁

teta · 29/03/2018 09:10

Safari is Sotd.Perfect for this chilly weather being both warm and green.
No answer from Gerald’s Decants .Has anyone ordered from him recently? He is normally very reliable and posts on the board when he will be away. I will leave it until after Easter.
Liberty isn’t it funny - I love Iris Prima because it’s a clean iris. Many Iris perfumes smell extremely ‘ knickery’ on me .Malles Iris Poudre is fantastic until the dry down but then - not 😁.
Has anyone tested the new bottles of Annick Goutal? I really want to buy Heure Exquise but I’m wondering if it’s been reformulated and I really dislike the new bottles. And it’s now over £100 😲

pestilentialboundary · 29/03/2018 09:19

SotD is Iris Nazarena. Leather, wood, iris and incense with spices too.

positivepineapple · 29/03/2018 09:52

Thanks Floofy Smile The arrogant cat went yesterday morning so should be with you today.

Fennel I might join you in a MG today.
Can I say, I honestly don't go looking for these things - they just pop up on my phone and it would be rude of me not to share the love.

MrsR the Guerlinade is fascinating, also thanks to Pest for the article.

I am convinced that Chanel do something similar, I had an hour to kill yesterday afternoon so went into the local Boots to have a sniff. It's only a retail park one so the fragrance section is quite limited. Reacquainted myself with the modern Chanel range and there is something familiar in them all. I just can't put my finger on it yet. Off I go to seek out Vintage on eBay for comparison.

I have a meeting at the hospital this afternoon about DF's discharge plan - assisted living seems the likeliest suggestion. I know it's for the best, I just can't help feeling sad about it.
