You probably know the drill by now - come and join us and to talk about perfume. We're friendly and smell lovely.

That's a marvellous vision Floof. No what you mean about not fancying summery scents in the snow...

Apologies, I appear to have woken up irritable this morning Blush. I will go and anoint myself with something calming!

MrsGruber · 19/03/2018 09:23

Not sure...can't help thinking SM is a bit like Marcel Duchamp's Urinal? (Is that a line that's stuck with me from Somerset House? ).

'A perfume for all genders' is a fair cop. Germaine Cellier anyone?

Sorry Floof meant know. I've woken up illiterate...

My obsession arrives today!!
I'm feeling pretty rough today :(
A sofa day methinks

AlexisColbysFANCYfrock · 19/03/2018 10:56

Morning all (another name change, but still fancy Grin).

I haven't sniffed Obsession in years, mrsr. You've tempted me now! I always get it mixed up in my mind with Opium for some reason. Are they similar?

I'm in my CBA perfume today (Burberry for Women), but contemplating which FB I am going to hint-hint to DH to get me for my birthday. I want something classic that I don't already own, so was thinking maybe Diorissimo? What FB would you have if you were in line for a potential gift? (Don't think DH will stretch to certain niche prices, though!).

mrsreynolds · 19/03/2018 11:06

I don't think they are similar tbh
They are both classed as orientals of course;
Opium is very rich, spicy, warm, unctuous even.
Obsession is lighter, still warm and spicy but more wearable imo

Dowser · 19/03/2018 11:20

Thank you for the warm welcome.
I got my first ever grown up perfume of youth dew when I was 20
I just went back to it last year and for another bottle at Christmas off dh
Yes the origins spring fever was discontinued. My friend found a bottle on eBay a few years ago and I usebit sparingly. It’s kept in a drawer and smells good.
I do like incense. I like nag champa. Or did you mean the perfume incense or en- sans- say?

UnnecessaryFennel · 19/03/2018 11:22

Stop the presses - the delightful Andy Tauer is going to be producing miniature versions of PHI - une rose de Kandahar. Which means that those of us in the UK should be able to buy them straight from his site! I heard it straight from the horse's mouth, too Wink

SOTD is A City on Fire by Imaginary Authors. This starts off as a slightly scary smokebomb but then mellows fairly fast to a really cosy, spicy sweetness. Previous scents from them have been a bit hit-and-miss for me but the last two - this one and Memoirs of a Trespasser - get a big thumbs-up.

OCSockOrphanage · 19/03/2018 13:06

Thank you for the new thread! Hi y'all...

That is joyful news about Andy Tauer miniatures: is he going to do all of them? Have just subscribed so I find out promptly.

Citizen Queen today, mainly because the JHaG sample box was to hand and I have a fancy for a chypre.

thiskittenbarks · 19/03/2018 14:14

Hello - new to the thread but not to perfume obsessing! I have a lot of perfume that I love but I seem to have stopped wearing it much since birth of DS 16 months ago - trying to get back into wearing it for myself - even if some days I'm only off out to the supermarket!
Today I am wearing Serge lutens 5oclock gingembre - a bit manly but I don't like anything overly floral and tend to go for spicy perfume! it's very warm smelling and I need that today!

LibertyBlue · 19/03/2018 14:23

Thanks for new thread- good to see lots of hilarity so far! SOTD is Chanel Bois de Iles, eeking the last of teta’s sample & plotting how to get my hands on more! If anyone knows of vendors for the 15ml please let me know. I’m flying soon so airport would be good.

I’m currently sitting in a Swedish bakery off Floral Street in Covent Garden eating the most delicious cinnamon bun, ridiculously excited about my impending visit to Bloom round the corner. I’ve already had an amazing pizza for lunch (pizza pilgrims) having unexpectedly found myself in London today for a meeting, en route to business trip elsewhere in UK. Also just won new business. Today is a good day!

I will report back fellow sniffers and mention you lot sent me here Grin

UnnecessaryFennel · 19/03/2018 16:05

Welcome thiskitten, stick around and you'll discover we don't need any excuse at all to wear perfume Grin. I love Five o'clock Gingembre too but sadly my tiny sample has run out, need to re-purchase. I agree it's perfect for a chilly day.

liberty am champing at the bit to hear about your trip to Bloom! And I do love a cinnamon bun...

UnnecessaryFennel · 19/03/2018 16:20

I have really enjoyed A City on Fire today, might even be FB-worthy...although Memoirs of a Trespasser might just edge it as I'd probably get more wear out of that. As if I'm going to be spending £90 on either bottle any time soon!

My Amouage Library Collection set arrived this morning, as did my 10ml bottle of Alais Paris. I don't get much leather in this - lots of violet, musk and pink pepper though, plus ?cedarwood. It's going to be a good office scent I think - interesting enough for me to want to wear, not so interesting that it freaks out non-perfume-lovers in meetings. The bottle is a beauty though - heavy engraved black glass and a blingy gold top.

The Amouage coffret is great! I was somewhat unsure about this - we don't talk much about Amouage on here and I have a bit of a natural disinclination towards anything marketed as 'luxury', so all in all it was a bit of a chancy one. There are 7 perfumes in the set and then the ebay seller included number VIII as a separate piece. My sense of smell isn't brilliant today due to stinking cold but gosh, there is certainly some quality there. I was particularly taken by no. II which has glorious lavender topnotes, no. III which is violet and no. VII which is very green and aromatic. Am looking forward to being able to sample these properly once my nose is working again.

AlexisColbysFANCYfrock · 19/03/2018 17:21

Welcome Dowser and kitten. This is the best thread on MN Grin.

Fennel let us know about your adventures with Amouage. I have a sample of Sunshine which I love, but have no other experience of this brand.

MrsGruber · 19/03/2018 17:45

It's funny Kitten - pregnancy and motherhood seemed to completely reconfigure my taste in perfume. Took about five years to enjoy incense or anything animalic again. So now I am making up for lost time

I'm going for obsession for sote 😁

CountFosco · 19/03/2018 19:16

SotD was Mrs Gloss Outdoors for FILs funeral. But I forgot the implications of a Catholic funeral (as opposed to the Presbyterian ones of my family). Walked into the chapel and the gorgeous warm scents of the incense. Funeral went as well as these things can (good life, good death) and he's buried in a beautiful cemetry so we'll take the kids to see him whenever we visit.

CheapTarnishedGlitter · 19/03/2018 19:25

Hello!!

Any chance the Annick Goutal changes might prompt relatively cheap selling off of current formulations?want to try a few but not got round to it yet... Crossing fingers! or clutching at straws

SotD on Saturday was Putain Des Palaces. An ELDO daft name/story but lovely scent. Olga picked it in Bloom when I said I liked iris and it's definitely powdery with rose coming through after a while but there's something else too. Almost boozy on the strip on the shop. Don't know what the note is but this stuff is lovely.

After the Big Sniff yesterday, SotD was Panda (new formulation). Opening was green to the point of almost earthy but that didn't last. Really enjoyed this one - and I've still got a nice skin scent having last sprayed at about 10.15am

Looking forward to hearing about Bloom Blue!

CheapTarnishedGlitter · 19/03/2018 19:26

Glad it went as well as could be expected Count Flowers

UnnecessaryFennel · 19/03/2018 20:02

Flowers Count and your family

Cheap, I really like Panda too. Know what you mean about the earthy green-ness. You can almost smell the bamboo shoots snapping, and there's a slight rotting fruit note in there as well which I enjoy.

Talking of which, had a quick squirt of Dark Heart of Old Havana this evening. Luscious, boozy, rotten loucheness. Really suits me perfectly at the moment, sublime as I am with snotty tissues falling out of my pockets and my rabbity-red nose.

OCSockOrphanage · 19/03/2018 20:17

Back to last year, old hands will recall me stressing about DS's canoe marathon, and scents to discourage swan attacks. (Beaufort 1805 if you care). This year's March weather has been so atrocious (cold) that the two long routine (35k) warm ups have been frozen off the canal, which may mean no one has been able to complete the qualifying races. For those who didn't follow the 2017 trip (perfumistas were forced to, not quite at gun point) we are talking about the Devizes-Westminster International Canoe Marathon; the Everest of canoeing. In retrospect, it was a doddle, because the weather was perfect, but this year it seems likely to be a small race because the qualifying stages have had to be cancelled. Do you all care? Hell, no!

Citizen Queen is still (just) there and still a classic chypre.

LibertyBlue · 19/03/2018 20:24

Firstly, Flowers for CountFosco and family

Welcome to kitten my tastes changed after baby too. I think it’s common- not sure why (hormones?)

Ah reduced Annick Goutal - yeay! But also very concerned at the direction such a wonderful house is taking. Personally thought Tenue Du Soirée was a travesty (and it gives me a headache) even if you like the smell, I think we can all agree the bottles with pompoms are beyond ridiculous!

Ah my visit to Bloom. What a wonderful shop. Exactly as described. The staff are fabulous. I came away with 15 samples (many of them Zoologist which I’ve not tried before and loved). Also a LOT of heavenly Iris scents (bit obesssed with the note at the moment). I’m now coveting 3 FBs and when I’ve saved my pennies, they will be going to Bloom.

I also had a quick walk around the other perfume shops in the area. Got a free sample of Iris Rebelle from Atelier Cologne (really dreamy Iris) Bois de Illes from Chanel (score!) and purchased a 8 bottle sample pack from Floral Street. I was really impressed with three of their scents in the shop (wasn’t so keen on Chypre Sublime during the Big Sniff), they were also lovely. I can’t want to try these out on my skin.

Happy days!!!

OCSockOrphanage · 19/03/2018 20:27

Very fond of Amouage perfumes: top quality ingredients and immaculately blended. Whisper it, the PP equivalents are pretty good. I buy samples of the echt jus so I know what it does smell like, then try out the PP. They are more often than not an acceptable substitute, not as long or deep, but with an acceptable complexity.

AlexisColbysFANCYfrock · 19/03/2018 20:32

Fosco RIP to your FIL. I’m an atheist, but raised a Catholic and from a big Irish Catholic family. As such, Catholic funerals are the norm to me and I find incense and the ‘smells and bells’ of RC funerals strangely comforting. I hope your day was not too traumatic Flowers

I was browsing John Lewis online today looking for a good price on Diorissimo EDP abd saw the shape of the new Goutal bottles. Why? I loved the old bottles. So French , so feminine and so beautifully old fashioned. Now a horrible square lid and so uniform. Nooooo.
