You probably know the drill by now - come and join us and to talk about perfume. We're friendly and smell lovely.

Old Thread.

Floof - that's Thread 12's group attire sorted then. You'll have to post a link so we'll all know where to purchase from Smile. Perhaps negotiate a discount?

Did rather like the scarf.

Big - bought it!

mrsreynolds · 23/03/2018 13:48

Oh that would be great one thank you!
X

BigPuddle - see if you can get a sample of TF from a dept store, it's new so they're available. I think it's lovely after a couple of hours - very warm and comforting. If I could afford it I think it would be a good day scent, rather than an evening perfume.

I usually like spicy oriental perfumes, so was surprised to like this as much as I do.

Tempted to try Obsession again, I always liked the version for men more than the women's. It's been a few years, time to have revisit it I think.

mrsreynolds · 23/03/2018 15:24

PP dupe of knowing is pretty damn good 👍

Spellbound is ok but I haven't smelt the original

Opium, cinnabar and knowing are definate PP successes 👍

mrsreynolds · 23/03/2018 15:41

...am happy to send them both on if anyone would like to try?

CountFosco · 23/03/2018 17:02

SotD Ealing Green here. I want to pretend (ha!) it's spring so wearing a bright green cardigan as well.

Was thinking about the enjoy/admire dichotomy for perfume. How do people like LT test perfumes, are they (we!) smelling strips or on skin? There's this thing in wine tasting where bigger, more alcoholic and fruitier wines are those that get raved about because when critics are at a tasting and trying hundreds of wines it's easier to remember the ones that hit you about the face. They aren't necessarily the ones you want to drink regularly though, lower alcohol wines that are less heavy on the tannins are far more drinkable, especially without food.

And in all art forms there's the relentless search for something 'new' and of course the impact of new technology (e.g. in art the discovery of new pigments and of course the invention of photography meaning art no longer had to be representative) or new discoveries (what did we eat before we discovered the Americas and started eating potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, chilli, chocolate, vanilla, beans, peanuts etc etc?). Things are often admired for being the first rather than the best.

LibertyBlue · 23/03/2018 17:23

The Naomi Goodsir has been disappointing- it dried down to a skin scent very quickly and is just quite boring. Poor performance for such a pricey perfume (might be my skin chemistry but I did spray liberally). Onto the next Iris!

Fosco I’ve given up on Spring! Can’t believe it’s Easter next week and there are no leaves on the trees. Very interesting reflection on wine tasting and I imagine perfume sniffing is similar. There’s no way they can try all the new releases on their skin, so definitely strips are relied upon.

MG Lemon is a grown-up woman at the height of her powers perfume and in that sense is a throwback to 70s. Its beautiful but grave. I buy the B Herman line that the stunning chypres of the 70s were the olfactory high water mark of the of the womens movement. Women were allowed (briefly) to smell complex and serious rather than fluffy and sweet or overtly vampy.

MrsReynolds I don’t know Opium Knowing or Obsession (I’ll get my coat now) but I know they are supposed to be very good, so I’m pleased to hear the PP dupes are good matches. Will pop them in with my next order Smile

LibertyBlue · 23/03/2018 17:27

Yes MrsGruber and now if you wear Rive Gauche or similar, people are probably dismissing it as ‘mumsy’ Or middle aged. So misguided

LibertyBlue · 23/03/2018 17:29

Floofy is look awful in a play suit (tall, busty - I’d probably get camels the Blush) can we go for something else please? Grin

mrsreynolds · 23/03/2018 17:30

I didnt rate the obsession dupe tbh
Thr opium is spot on

LibertyBlue · 23/03/2018 17:30

Ah - autocorrect! I’d look awful...Camel’s toe

MrsGruber · 23/03/2018 17:40

Could accessorize with Zoologist Camel Blue - every cloud and all that.

Mrs G completely agree with you about MG Lemon and smelling serious - thanks for introducing me to it Smile.

Re testing perfumes, I read Luca Turin's article on his blog about smelling 4160 Tuesdays perfumes - he said something about they had sent him 18 samples and he found them so interesting he tried them all rather than the 4 at a time he was planning - no way he can have done that on his skin! I am finding I don't always agree with him, but do love the way he writes.

auberginesrus · 23/03/2018 17:44

Count I am doing the same re perfumes and weather - was wearing Lemon earlier in the week and Ealing Green today. Plus bought a rather hopeful yellow cardigan in Sainsburys last week!

mrsreynolds · 23/03/2018 18:16

one
Dh has informed me he has got me some obsession for Easter so I think I'm ok for obsession for a while!!
But thank you anyway.

UnnecessaryFennel · 23/03/2018 18:19

I saw a youtube perfume blogger who had been sent a whole bunch of 4160 samples and he tried them all on his arms in the course of one video.

It was fun to watch but by the end I was almost yelling at the screen 'You can't possibly be smelling those properly!' like some kind of weirdo

pestilentialboundary · 23/03/2018 18:54

Why don't they send us samples?
Are we not sycophantic enough?

OneNightTimeMenaceStrikesBack · 23/03/2018 19:05

no worries MrsR Smile

I fell asleep for most of the afternoon, i had a rough night last night so went back to bed tucked up in obsession and ninja turtles onesie! I am the very height of sophistication

PerfumeIsAMessage · 23/03/2018 19:08

They should definitely send me samples as I'm probably the least impressed with them out of all of you, so they should be trying to change my mind mwahahaha.

Floof- yes, I love the PP Infusions d'Iris. The Iris cedre is also nice, but not as wonderfully soapy as the plain iris.

I must dig out MG Lemon- I liked it very much. The Plum was a huge minging scrubber on me I seem to recall, but the lemon is great. I agree with the analysis of the 70s (and earlier) chypres. There is a meme going the rounds showing loads of women with their tits out that says "this isn't feminism" and underneath female scientists and astronauts etc and it says "this is".Whilst I love Opium, Obsession, etc etc, and rocked a magnificent crushed velvet skin tight catsuit and lace gloves and wore underwear as outerwear for a good patch of the 80s, it is fairly obvious to me that dressing like a slapper because "I wanted to" isn't a feminist statement...

Cuir Cordoba for arctic temperatures today (no, really) and just had boiling hot Lush blue skies and fluffy clouds bubble bath. Will probably envelope myself in Shalimar in a mo'.

mrsreynolds · 23/03/2018 19:11

Ninja turtles!?
Excellent 😁

CheapTarnishedGlitter · 23/03/2018 19:35

Well after all this chat SotE is obviously Lemon!!

Happy birthday Ollivander and happy cakejar day. Drool!!!

Am sort of into Iris too, although for me that can often be more generically powder! ELDO Putain Des Palaces was a Bloom recommendation on the basis of me liking iris and I love it. Also enjoying some Chanel 22 I won from eBay which is lovely and powdery!

SotD was PP Paloma Picasso. This is one of my absolute faves - I keep forgetting how lovely it is and then wear it and think wow. How close is it to the real thing? Would be tempted to get some if it's even better but if the PP version is a good approximation then I think I'll be getting a big spray bottle of that...

Finally worked out that there is no 4160 scent called Truth Beauty Freedom Love Freeway but in fact two scents (called TBFL and Freeway) and an unfortunate lack of punctuation. And today is payday. So, you can work out the rest...
