I have the worst hair ever. Please please help me sort it! I actually feel ashamed to leave the house!

My hair is very thin, very fine. I can't have a fringe. It won't lie flat. The sides won't lie straight - it sticks up in whispy bits. It can't go longer, it looks witchy. I haven't had much success with it shorter. I don't have the time to go to the hairdresser regularly, plus I really have a fear of hairdressers akin to he dentist.

It's dyed but lots of gray underneath.i can't decide if I should go gray or continue to dye. It is so fine and flyaway. And I can't get any volume in it. Plus at the front there are many teeny baby hairs which never grow longer. I've left some of my face in the picture, so you can get an idea - I look so old and horrible, and my awful hair is just exacerbating the overall horrid look

Is there any cut or colour or treatment anyone can suggest? I'm really desperate.

I think if I told my friends that was me in the photo, they would’ve foolery we have very similar features and similar hair.
I’m not an expert but what works for me is a decent cut (not necessarily the most expensive on the high street but also not the shampoo and set gang at the top of the road. ).
Plus decent conditioning colour. The right colour and the right product, and definitely the right amount of product, will help.

Can you commit to a 30 minute wet cut once a month?

Would it be easier if you got a mobile hairdresser to come to you?
I sometimes feel self conscious at a salon.

My first thought is that going blonde might help. If you have it done by someone really good who can advise on the right shade it could plump up your hair texture and brighten and define your face. It is of course a big committment both in time and money, so not a simple solution, and very much a compromise if you aren't inclined to spend time at the salon. But if you're at the end of your tether with your hair I don't know how you'll avoid spending at least some time with a hairdresser.

If you don't mind me expressing an opinion I do think it isn't as bad as you think it is. You look utterly normal and fine. But I understand what it's like to feel like you can't stand your hair for one more moment.

I have a friend very like you, similar shape, colouring and hair. She has her hair coloured and treated, it's made a huge difference, her hair looks great now, still thin but she pulls it off. Also have you considered extensions?

Once I’ve had a shower I’ll post a photo of my hair. I doubt I have s before one as like you, I hated it. Flyaway, fine, baby hair, breaking etc.
But now I’ve had it cut, it’s got life and bounce and takes me about 3minutes to dry

Perhaps your hair is wavier than you think and that is why it won't lie straight at the sides?
For a short term solution maybe try 'braid waves' putting 4-5 plaits into damp hair and blowdrying, then take out the plaits, and comb gently. I have fine wispy wavy hair and did this when my hair was in a growing out bob. It gave it some volume for the first day at least.

No mobile hairdressers round here. Even if I got it cut this morning, I would still have those whispy bits at the front. I cannot make them lie flat. Even freshly cut. It has an annoying wave on one side and sticks out on the other. But I don't know how I should get it cut. What should I aim for? What do you all think of the colour?

I second the suggestion of a mobile hairdresser if you struggle with salons. You could ask them about doing Olaplex/othe similar conditioning treatments when they put colour (I think the colour you have is a little dull toned for your complexion and that's what the problem is, highlights through would really lift it without causing as much damage as commuting to full blonde) in order to improve condition and encourage the shorter bits to grow.

Have you had any thyroid tests done/how is your diet?

I had some 'catwalk queen' vitamins in the february look fantastic box and they really made a difference.

Aside from that would suggest speaking to a good hairdresser about cut/colour.

Same hair here, and I hate the hairdressers. They always say things like "sorry, can't do much with hair like this." Thanks.
When it's wet, try putting in gel and combing it to style, then when dry, brush out the gel. This will make it look a lot tamer at the front.
Have you considered a pixie style bob, your face looks like you could pull it off. You have great eyebrows by the way!

Definitely grow out that fringe and aim for one length. Try a volumising mousse after using a volumusing shampoo and a conditioning shampoo. I also like volumising powder for the roots (currently using swarzkopf’s got2b one that comes in a small purple container - sprinkle it on dry hair and it just gives a boost that lasts).

Good suggestion to go blonde and equally about the plaits. Your hair does seem to have a natural wave in it.

I have thyroid disease but it is more or less controlled atm. Is that something I should look into?

Cross post on mobile hairdressers! That's a shame. If you went for a highlight rather than full blonde you'd have a bit more leeway on length of time between visits to hairdresser?

My hair is also very fine and very thin. So I fully sympathise! I also use dry shampoo to thicken it. And I don’t wash it every day - it took me a while to train it to get it (and me!) ok with that though. A few days build up of product actually makes it feel thicker and it always seems more flyaway when it’s just washed.

This is good for gentle backcombing in conjunction with the volumising powder.

I have similar hair. Mine very fine doesn't really hold a style and I even have the wispy baby hairs. I get my hair cut in short graduated bob just below my ears; I have a side parting. I use a volumising shampoo and conditioner. Then to style it I use mouse or liquid gel. I blow dry my hair sectioning it and using a brush to lift it up. It doesn't take long as my hair is fairly short and fine. I then finish it off by sectioning my hair again and then running straighteners over to smooth and hold the shape. On days when I don't wash my hair I use the straighteners to smooth and give shape. It works for me and looks neat and tidy.

My hair never looks nicely tousled as it doesn't hold the curl or twist.

I love the grey cut especially and, it’s not a style where every hair needs to be “just so/in place”. A few sticky out pieces will look casual.

Either way, you need a decent hairdresser so that’ll be the difficult bit for you, I suspect.

I have very thin and fine hair. I stopped taking my pregnancy vitamins about a year after my son was born and really noticed the difference with my hair and nails.

I definitely reccomend supplements of B vitamins and biotin. That's what was in the pregnancy vitamins that was making my hair grow longer and thicker. I started taking pregnancy vitamins again even though it's been a year since I was pregnant and will continue to take them as my hair and nails are very much thanking me for it.

Oh, that's not me Barnet, I need to keep mine longer at the front to suit my face shape. Blonde highlights may work, a nice icy shade. I know the hairdressers if awful but think how good you'll feel afterwards when you look in the mirror. :-)

I was about to suggest a pixie. Also wonder if a perm would give it some life? What is the fear of hairdressers based on? Can we maybe help you there, so you can get real life help from a hairdresser?

I've got terrible hair but have found some products that really help.

I buy good shampoo. I alternate between Kerastate for volume (volumifique) and Nutritive. I actually didn't realise that my hair was dry until I started using Nutritive and noticed a great difference.

I have to wash daily but then I put on a tiny bit of John Frieda frizz ease (if you put on too much it goes greasy) and then Paul Mitchell super sculpt.

Then I blow dry and finally use my big hair Babyliss.

All of this takes in total less than 10 minutes.

Try good products and try different ones. Buy good quality stuff for your hair.

PS I do think you need to grow out the shorter bits more so that you get more volume.
