do we really like ankle boots with dresses?

I've got thin ankles and slim calves. I think I look a bit ridiculous with ankle boots and a dress. But it's the 'thing' isn't it? I've recently ordered some ankle boots with a 'sock' a slightly higher ankle (Dune) to see if it helps.
But a few years ago, no one would have dreamed of wearing ankle boots with dresses, only trousers.

Am I alone in this?

Your legs all look fine.

Nobody else is thinking "that woman's legs look like tree trunks / golf clubs".

fancyKnickers · 09/10/2017 12:05

I used to wear knee high boots with tights and dresses/skirts/shorts but have pretty much moved to ankle boots in the last few years with the occasional OTK pair.

rightknockered · 09/10/2017 22:43

I love my 20 hole black Dms. Had them for years, bring them out every winter.

Polkadot1974 · 10/10/2017 21:24

Wondering if a shoe boot might be for me ...

differenteverytime · 10/10/2017 21:35

Anybody got links to examples of this look? I'm finding it hard to picture style of dress, etc. that might work. I rarely wear dresses but might be in the market for a new 'work uniform' (fingers crossed...)

KickAssAngel · 10/10/2017 21:40

I don't like it when the boots are too wide compared to the legs. Lace-up boots that fit to the legs look good, or ones that are slim. But boots that gape don't look good imo.

MysweetAudrina · 10/10/2017 21:41

It's my staple work wardrobe at this time of the year. I wear fitted work dresses to my knee and black opaque tights with black suede ankle boots.

CountFosco · 11/10/2017 08:01

Street Style looks with dresses and ankle boots. Personally I prefer my legs in tights for this look but surprised you've not seen anyone wear it, last winter at work everyone was wearing ankle boots if the had a skirt on and I work with a bunch of scientists in the north who are not very fashion forward.

JDSTER · 11/10/2017 09:21

I love ankle boots with dresses and skirts. Can anyone link to Boots they've got? I'm always on the look out for boots.

differenteverytime · 11/10/2017 09:37

Thank you, Fosco! I am extremely unobservant when it comes to current looks, live down a hole in the middle of nowhere and have been away from office work for fifteen years Grin.

differenteverytime · 11/10/2017 09:47

Ah, I think I've also got a fair impression of it by searching for 'Dresses and Tunics' on the Seasalt website...

Madeyemoodysmum · 11/10/2017 15:58

Could get some nice thick leggings and nice tunics and wear Salopettes to Resturant and take them off when you get there. Most bars etc have a lobby and coat hanging area as everyone is bundled up.

Madeyemoodysmum · 11/10/2017 15:59

Oops sorry wrong thread.

FedupNagging · 11/10/2017 16:38

Jdster I'm currently wearing these ash jalouse boots with black opaques and the whistles zebra print dress.

In answer to the original question, yes I like boots with dresses but only got into the look last winter always late to a trend. I'm quite short so always thought it was a look I couldn't do but the trick is to wear the right boots with the right dress/skirt. I definitely can't do ankle boots with anything longer than knee length nor a boot that comes up high over the ankle.

I love my knee length boots and will never give them up though Grin

Im a guest at a wedding in early October, and I have nothing to wear and no idea what to buy! Any advise please! I’m 50 and short if that helps😁

NorrisButter · 03/09/2018 18:42

Shit, thought i’d made a new thread🙄 soz for being a zombie!

wizzywig · 03/09/2018 18:42

Looks great when you are slim. In all the 'over 40' blogs im now following (thanks to you all!!) have the long skirt and white trainer combo

DelilahandDaisy · 03/09/2018 18:44

I like it, I have tiny feet though, if you have big feet and slim legs it can look a bit odd, I think.

MsHomeSlice · 03/09/2018 18:56

I do this but I don't like to mix too many colours, so it's always black boots, black tights, the dress , usually v close to the knee, and a wafty long cardi in, yes, you guessed it, BLACK.

I also have quite a lot of knee length flarey tunicy type jumpers, that are not really dresses, or jumpers and they get the same treatment....black legs/black boots.

ChishandFips33 · 03/09/2018 19:28

Depends on the boot and the dress/skirt but I'd struggle without wearing this combination

I've just realised I don't really own shoes! I have sandals, a couple of pairs of brogues and the rest of my 70+ pairs collection is predominantly ankle boots then a few pairs of mid calf and knee length boots.

XingMing · 03/09/2018 20:33

I prefer knee-high boots, whether with midi skirt or above the knee. But always with colour matched tights. That probably makes me old.

goose1964 · 05/09/2018 17:47

It's nothing new we did it in the 80s , remember pixie boots?

FedupNagging · 05/09/2018 18:35

I loved my burgundy pixie boots goose which I wore for school resulting in detention with knickerbockers, frilly shirt & feathered hat; looking back I suspect those admiring glances were more Hmm

Growingboys · 05/09/2018 19:04

I see it looks trendy but I don't think it looks attractive.

Appreciate that makes me sound 600 years old but there you go.

DolorestheNewt · 05/09/2018 19:10

Think it looks great. One of my great sadnesses in life is that I have thick ankles and huge calves so I can barely wear skirts, far less a skirt with ankle boots. Lucky you.
