do we really like ankle boots with dresses?

I've got thin ankles and slim calves. I think I look a bit ridiculous with ankle boots and a dress. But it's the 'thing' isn't it? I've recently ordered some ankle boots with a 'sock' a slightly higher ankle (Dune) to see if it helps.
But a few years ago, no one would have dreamed of wearing ankle boots with dresses, only trousers.

Am I alone in this?

I still like knee boots with mini skirts too. Not a fan of knee high boots with jeans, unless going for a walk and wanting to feel cosy.

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 07/10/2017 16:29

I've been wearing heeled ankle boots with dresses since the early 90s (fantastic RedOrDead pair bought in Affleck's Palace). Before that I wore Docs with dresses. So it's not a new thing. It completely works for me - I've got very long legs and it balances out my proportions. Whereas knee high boots look all wrong - for a start, they always stop at mid calf on me...

Chewbecca · 07/10/2017 16:46

I'm so jealous of people who can wear this look, it looks so comfortable. My calves are so so wide plus short, it is desperately unflattering. I do have ankles so if my legs are out, it is essential I show them.

Abijam · 07/10/2017 17:00

It would be good for a casual look. But I think it would be nicer on younger than the older ones. I'd rather wear ankles with my Jeans.

WomblingThree · 07/10/2017 18:10

So if ankle boots are old fashioned and knee boots are old fashioned, what are we supposed to wear? 😉

Jiggler · 07/10/2017 18:22

It depends. I like it with an ankle boot that dips at the front. Dislike it with ankle boots that are tightly zipped at the sides. Plus it has a lot to do with led length and shape as to how flattering it is.

Wombling Grin Grin Grin
Whatever the heck you want!

SomewhatIdiosyncratic · 07/10/2017 19:11

I can't see it working for me and my tiny feet and shapely but very muscular calves on short legs. I stick with knee highs to maximise length. I find stumpy a very easy look to achieve Wink

I'd go for DMs, not just because it takes me back to my not-so-lost youth, but because it's a more casual look that can carry off looking heavy, over trying to look more sophisticated.

silkpyjamasallday · 07/10/2017 19:21

I have always worn dresses with boots, but I always get clumpy boots or ones that are cut quite low and loose as I have chunky ankles and calves and I pretend this combo makes my legs look slimmer.

I have a big thing for wearing incongruous shoes though, I wear loafer mules or ballet flats with tracksuit bottoms and trainers and boots with dresses. Birkenstocks with socks, or furry slides with just about anything. Not groundbreaking now at all but the majority of people wear smart style shoes with smart clothes and casual shoes with a casual outfit. Unless I need to look smart I wear shoes that just don't 'go' with what I'm wearing, I like a contrast and it means I wear nicer things more because I dress them down with awful shoes GrinI feel far too done and not like me otherwise.

rightknockered · 07/10/2017 19:32

Apparently we should all now be wearing OTK boots with a kitten heel, which slouch down, like in the 80's. And they should be patent leather

JaceLancs · 07/10/2017 19:32

I've been wearing this look for quite a few years, but also wear knee length boots sometimes too
As an earlier poster said I think it looks better with boots that have a dip at the front and are neither too tight or too loose round the ankle
I'm lucky enough to have a wide variety of boots, some styles work with a tube skirt or jersey dress, others look better with sweater dresses
I wouldn't wear a knee length skirt with the same boots as a shorter or longer skirt

CountFosco · 07/10/2017 21:38

I had some gorgeous grey pixie boots in the 80s that I wish I still had. Then I wore them with leg warmers and baggy trousers with zip details (can't remember what style that was) but now I'd wear them with dresses.

Haffiana · 07/10/2017 23:18

Dresses, tights and ankle or biker boots are my standard winter attire. I am in my mid-fifties, my dresses are just below the knee or mid-calf, and I don't care how fat my calves are, or how short I am. Brogues are good for Autumn weather like now, though.

I definitely have a preference for chunky boots though, (DMs or Ugg) - in my mind this makes the whole thing look slightly edgy, rather than me trying to look fashionable. Agree not too tight around the ankle - a boot should look like it has its own presence and not be hiding! Knee highs have always faintly repelled me, but I accept they good on other people!

But dear god I hate a kitten heel...

Peppermeant · 08/10/2017 01:00

I swear "they" try to bring otk boots into fashion every winter (& yet they are so unwearable for most)

Peppermeant · 08/10/2017 01:01

Also does patent leather "slouch"? Grin

WomblingThree · 08/10/2017 01:19

I love over the knee boots. I’ve got 3 pairs of suede ones and I wear them with thick tights and either a-line minis or short jumper dresses. I don’t care if no one else likes them, I find them really comfy Grin.

RavenLG · 08/10/2017 01:20

It's all I wear tbf. I'm overweight and short but it's all I feel comfortable in and literally dgaf what people think. If I'm comfy then I'm happy ha.

mizu · 08/10/2017 09:13

Haven't read the whole thread yet but I've been wearing ankle boots with dresses for years, I like this look a lot.

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 08/10/2017 10:08

Kitten heels are harder to walk in than proper high heels IME - skid off to the side on any remotely shiny surface. An A&E doctor of my acquaintance once described the pressure they create as akin to a elephant standing on a drawing pin Grin

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 08/10/2017 10:23

I live in ankle boots in winter and wear them with everything, but when I go to buy a new pair it's a whole day event with supplies and GPS tracking and I often come back empty handed. The length of the boot has to be JUST right or they make my skinny but curvy lower legs look like tree trunks. Last year's Miss Geigers are going to fall apart soon I think and I can't actually bear the thought of another shopping expedition.

OnTheSherry · 08/10/2017 10:25

Its my work uniform. Pencil dress, black opaques, some version of black ankle boot. Easy and I think its pretty flattering for me (tall and long legged).

I dont do that summery look of dress-bare legs-ankle boot, though. I feel too old for it and it would odd with my skinny ankle.

I do love an over the knee boot, too, but because of said lankiness, I have to be very careful not to channel Julia Roberts In Pretty Woman...

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 08/10/2017 10:55

I like the look of a sweater dress with over the knee boots, but I've never found a pair long enough for my legs.

Tanaqui · 08/10/2017 21:07

Were they called pixie boots in the 80s? And they came straight up at the side- nowhere close to your leg! Then Dms in the 90s, I went over to knee high in the 00s though! Now, being old, I have many styles and wear them all. Am so glad feet generally don't change size!

OlennasWimple · 08/10/2017 21:13

I occasionally pine for my 20 eye dark blue DMs that I wore with pretty much everything in the late 1990s...

Laiste · 09/10/2017 08:43

I bought a pair of OTK boots last winter (black suede, block 3'' heel, lovely to walk in) on a fashion whim and my god they kept my legs warm! I wore them most days in the end and when i 'came out' of them last spring i felt really drafty Grin

This year i've bought a pair of choc. brown ankle boots (3'' block heel again - i look shite in flat boots) and i'm loving the ankle boot, opaque tights and mini skirt look.

All the lovely autumn/winter shades of navy, black, berry, dark green, french blue, and chocolate browns in opaques with a black or brown boot are fun to wear after the summer.
