do we really like ankle boots with dresses?

I've got thin ankles and slim calves. I think I look a bit ridiculous with ankle boots and a dress. But it's the 'thing' isn't it? I've recently ordered some ankle boots with a 'sock' a slightly higher ankle (Dune) to see if it helps.
But a few years ago, no one would have dreamed of wearing ankle boots with dresses, only trousers.

Am I alone in this?

Prolly perky I can recall wearing ankle boots with dresses/ skirts in the 1980s. I recall wearing a long full skirt with gathers with flat pixie type boots and black leg warmers around 1983/84 and a shortish sweatshirt dress with pointy toe stiletto heeled ankle boots a couple of years later. Perhaps I wore clothes no one else did!

TonicAndTonic · 06/10/2017 22:38

Like others, my winter work wardrobe is basically dresses, opaques and flat or mid heel ankle boots, plus big chunky cardigans. Been doing this for a few winters now, it's just so easy! I have narrow feet, and find boots to be by far the most comfortable smart shoe.

dantdmistedious · 06/10/2017 22:39

I like it, it suits me and believe me a lot doesn’t!

catrin · 06/10/2017 22:42

I wear them a lot. Well, skirts rather than dresses. And even though I have mahoosive ankles, I've got a real down on longer boots at the mo - anything knee length seems frumpy and mid length a bit dated.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 06/10/2017 22:43

I got tan flat ankle boots for Christmas in 1988 - can remember the year because of who I was dating at the time, because I couldn't wait to go for a walk in them with him and show them/him off!

I also had black suede ones that were kind of loose and scrunched and had beads on, and a pair of sky high black suede lace up ankle boots that I wore with a vintage velvet maxi skirt.

catrin · 06/10/2017 22:46

Oh I had loose scrunched ones but they had fringes around the top. They looked bloody ace with my stone wash skinnies with ankle zips as well as my Alison moyet/bananarama skirts.

Definitely depends on the person, the dress & the boots. I am quite short but with reasonably “ good” legs so can sometimes pull it off. I often think I should wear dresses & skirts more as I live in trousers

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 06/10/2017 22:48

I still miss some of those boots. My heart belongs in 1987.

Blankscreen · 06/10/2017 22:48

I definitely need boots with a dip at the front- I think it helps elongate my legs.

Ash jalouse are perfect for this. I have three pairs and I live in them.

Viserion · 06/10/2017 22:49

Not a look that I have ever liked. There are very few people that it really suits IMO (and an awful lot who think it does), but if they choose to dress that way, more power to them.

catrin · 06/10/2017 22:51

remus I completely agree. Although I appear to be slightly stuck somewhere between 1986 and 1993 in terms of music as well as clothes...

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 06/10/2017 22:54

The Smiths broke up in 1987. It's all been downhill since then.

Dixiestampsagain · 06/10/2017 22:58

Ah, who am I trying to kid, I've absolutely been wearing them since the 80s, not the 90s. I reckon the grey ones I have now are almost identical to the ones I had in 1983 ages 7. My legs are my only good bit, so it looks ok...hopefully.

Peppermeant · 06/10/2017 23:07

I'm another one who has been wearing this for years and find knee high boots incredibly dated. A number of s&b threads on this recently though as if it's a new thing, which has been puzzling!

Floisme · 06/10/2017 23:10

No, knee high boots are cool again.
I have decided.

Celticlassie · 06/10/2017 23:13

My legs are skinny but short so while I love the look it can be difficult to get it to work, without wearing a very short skirt.

TheDodgyShoesOfDrFoster · 06/10/2017 23:48

I don’t care whether knee-high boots are “in” or “out”! They are timelessly elegant and easily the most flattering footwear in existence. I really don’t get ankle boots worn with skirts - but then the kooky, floaty look just doesn’t work on me. On some people, I am happy to admit, they may work fine.

DarkDarkNight · 07/10/2017 00:14

I like it. To me it's a slightly awkward, off key look and I like that.

Butterymuffin · 07/10/2017 00:22

Nope. It doesn't work.

BriechonCheese · 07/10/2017 00:22

Gosh this has been my main look since about 2002!

FunkinEll · 07/10/2017 00:54

I love the look but have massive calves so it just looks terrible on me 😥

Longislandicetee · 07/10/2017 07:04

I don't know about "we" but I usually wear dresses with shoe boots or ankle boots in autumn and as it gets colder swap to otk boots. It's a good look on me.

Floisme · 07/10/2017 07:11

It depends what I'm wearing. If it's knee length or just below then I like an ankle boot cos it shows off my lower legs and ankles - which are still in decent nick - but looks more modern than a shoe.

But I've got a couple of midi skirts that I'm going to wear this winter and they look all wrong with ankle boots: you've got an expanse of calf in opaques before the boot starts and there's just too much going on in a few inches of leg. So with them, a knee boot looks more streamlined and elegant and you focus on the skirt.

choppolata · 07/10/2017 07:52

My skinny legs and I have been rocking the ankle boots and miniskirts since the 80s and we will continue to do so! It's a lot easier to find ankle boots that fit than calf/knee length.

sooperdooper · 07/10/2017 16:14

I used to love knee high boots with skirts but think that look is a bit dated now, though some people still carry off knee high boots with jeans
