do we really like ankle boots with dresses?

I've got thin ankles and slim calves. I think I look a bit ridiculous with ankle boots and a dress. But it's the 'thing' isn't it? I've recently ordered some ankle boots with a 'sock' a slightly higher ankle (Dune) to see if it helps.
But a few years ago, no one would have dreamed of wearing ankle boots with dresses, only trousers.

Am I alone in this?

I like them and I lived in tube skirts and ankle boots for about 4 winters running. But it depends on where they end e.g. I think ankle bone length works for me but mid calf not so much.

I've also retrieved my knee length boots from the back of the cupboard. I haven't worn them for several years but I'm planning to this winter.

zippydoodaar · 06/10/2017 18:06

No, I don't get it at all.

CountFosco · 06/10/2017 18:46

Maybe it depends on your age. I spent the 90s wearing DMs with everything and reckoned the clumpy boots made my dhort and curvy (but not overweight) legs look slimmer. So it was easy to start wearing that look again although this time my boots aren't all as heavy.

SleightOfMind · 06/10/2017 18:59

I did combat boots with dresses in the 90s but they hid my skinny ankles and clumpy Gapey boots worked then.
Now the look is svelter but most boots gape on me and my legs look like golf clubs.
Not only do they look shit but things fall down the back of them!

PNGirl · 06/10/2017 19:11

I was wearing stripy jumper dresses with tights, DMs and a leather jacket last winter. Is there a different way of doing this that you mean?

tehmina23 · 06/10/2017 19:52

I like ankle boots with dresses, and knee length boots, and otk boots... I just like Boots a lot!

starkid · 06/10/2017 20:21

Through autumn and winter I basically only wear ankle boots with everything, including dresses/skirts and black leggings/thick black tights.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 06/10/2017 20:26

I love ankle boots with skirts and dresses. Then again, I started wearing them in the 80s and never really stopped.

LunaTheCat · 06/10/2017 20:27

I used to do this when I was slim and gorgeous in the 80's. Recently started doing it again ( now in my 50's and not quite so slim!) I am short and I still love it.
I have 20 yr old pair black lace ups hand made which I wear with purple socks and dress and another pair of pale brown leather London Fly which I do same thing with. Other people may look at me like an idiot but I feel cool and 20 again!

SleightOfMind · 06/10/2017 20:42

I bet you do look cool - if not quite 20 again. I think ankle boots & dresses is a good look on other people, smarter than trainers, more laid back than shoes or long boots.
Just wish It worked for me Sad

PollyPerky · 06/10/2017 21:10

I think it depends on your legs. I have slim legs and very slim ankles. There may be THE perfect pair of boots out there that look good- I've got 3 prs ankle boots- but on the whole they make me look like Minnie Mouse.
I like the look on others if they have the right legs.

When I said they were not in fashion in the past, I meant the 1980s. No one worse ankle boots with skirts or dresses, ever. It'd been thought of as weird. Maybe they became 'in' about 10 years ago.

People only wore ankle boots with leg warmers.

Tods have some ankle boots for women with slim ankles/calves. I like the look and find it helps balance out my curves. Heels look very dated now.

CocoaIsGone · 06/10/2017 21:21

I am glad most responses were positive to this, I was wearing ankle boots with a dress today.

NC4now · 06/10/2017 21:39

Maybe it's my 90s love of Doc Martens with dresses having a renaissance.
I seem to have slid comfortably back into my harem pants and vest tops too.
I'm actually regressing to 17-year-old me, aren't I?!
Next step: nose ring and dreadlocks, with a touch of 2017 thrown in.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 06/10/2017 21:40

They were definitely in fashion in the past, or at least in my pretty alternative definition of 'in fashion' in a Northern town in the 80s and 90s. I like Minnie Mouse too - she's one of my style icons. Grin

Dixiestampsagain · 06/10/2017 21:44

Oh, I didn't even realise they were 'out of fashion' and I think I've been wearing that combo since the 90s. I usually 'worry' more about what suits me and is comfortable than whether something is 'in fashion' (I clearly have no clue about that!). Love a pair of ankle boots.

Judydreamsofhorses · 06/10/2017 21:50

I like it, and at this time of year my "work uniform" is pretty much dress or skirt with opaque tights and flat Chelsea boots. I've not had knee-high boots for about five years now.

Polkadot1974 · 06/10/2017 21:54

Always used to wear docs and dress but felt better as they were snug. Now I'm not so sure with the boots I have that I don't look dumpy

TheGrumpySquirrel · 06/10/2017 21:54

Only looks good on people with thin calves IMO. I have tree trunk legs but still force myself to wear ankle boots with a skirt/dress sometimes as it’s just so damn practical. But it def makes my legs look fatter (compared to knee high boots or high heels)

Madeyemoodysmum · 06/10/2017 22:02

I like it I think I have good legs tho as I'm apple shaped. Might as well flaunt the good bits

CallarMorvern · 06/10/2017 22:03

Only ankle boots that look good with dresses ( in my mind) are DMs and they need a short dress. I'm long past short dresses!

sophiesmother · 06/10/2017 22:20

I love it for casual wear. But not for party wear.

Theaspidistraiswilting · 06/10/2017 22:29

I wear brogue Chelsea boots with black opaque tights and socks! I have candles and I pretend to myself that the sock detail hides them...

Theaspidistraiswilting · 06/10/2017 22:29

Cankles not candles FFS
