We'll go anywhere in search of things that smell great, and then we discuss them here. Feel free to join us.

Good to hear Gladys from Guerlain is keeping up the good work! So far they're delivering a consistently good customer experience Smile.

Hello Splendid.

All this Guerlain talk is making me want some Apres L'Ondee (and to visit the Guerlain palace like Green. How are you getting on with your goodies Green - did they send you away with samples?).

Pest - think all this serious sniffing has expanded my horizons, so lots of things I would've dismissed as not really being 'me', I'm, now interested in for their own sake, if that makes sense?

Hope you're all Ok now Cheap and you get some sleep tonight.

You sound a candidate for the extrait version Mary - made for Jo Fairley?

My organisation is bit odd to reflect the different size boxes (and I have loads of normal size bottles of stuff that I've bought cheaply with just the last inch or two left - which aren't great storage-wise). But the samples themselves are just divided up between fruits 'n' florals/chypres/woods/orientals. With a 'little try me' box balanced on top for things I haven't tried yet or can't remember or are in some way topical.

Was thinking some more about the Pareto and Mosca 80/20 thing...almost counted them all up and split out the ones I wear all the time to check the ratio Grin. (I note this hobby is bringing out a completely different aspect of my normally rather chaotic personality. Not sure if this is useful balancing or an unhealthy obsession...).

I assume MrsM that you are inferring that you wear 20% of your perfume 80% of the time. Not that you own 80% of the perfume on these threads Grin that would take some cupboard.

MrsMacNally · 30/09/2017 22:58

Would be marvellous! But yes, the former - what about you Pest , do you reckon you wear 20% of your stuff 80% of the time?

OP posts:
Pestilentialone · 30/09/2017 23:09

I fear I am a perfume slattern and raid the cupboard in a rather libertine manner. I am mood, weather and seasonally influenced.

MrsMacNally · 30/09/2017 23:11

Me too, but I come back to some things more than others...

Judydreamsofhorses · 30/09/2017 23:13

I teach the Pareto Principle by saying you wear 20% of your wardrobe 80% of the time.

Pestilentialone · 30/09/2017 23:13

I can happily do seven or more in a week. I think 20% do 50% of the work. Will have to keep spreadsheet to confirm, but that will introduce observation bias.

GreenPolishToGo · 01/10/2017 01:05

Cheap I hope DS2 is on the mend and you can all catch up on your rest tonight and have a gentle day tomorrow. Breathing problems in small people are scary. You must be shattered.Flowers

Good to see you back Floofy. What would be a suitable scent for Yom Kippur, do you think? You're right, it does seem Roman Catholics, whether practising or thoroughly lapsed, are hooked on the aroma of incense.

For me, the scent notes for a mass would have to include incense, hot candlewax, holy water (vaguely green-ish), flowers, beeswax polish, old paper, damp, napthalene (yes, really from the mothproofed Sunday bests) and a touch of skank (all those people).

MrsMac I am in awe of your skill in arranging samples by perfume type. I am sure if I tried the same thing I would grind to a halt almost at once after sniffing wildly and failing completely to decide whether something should be 'green', or 'chypre' or goodness knows what. My samples (when I've kept them - a lot get passed on to DD) are mostly in the boxes they came in. Bluebell's idea of reusing a beauty Advent Calendar has left me wondering about storing them alphabetically... But I expect I shall continue rootling in one box after another.

You would love the Guerlain palace MrsMac and I'm sure you'd be appreciated by the staff. They do know their stuff and are very helpful. On Sundays and quiet days they'll even get the bottle engraved for you as part of the service, which is why I have a L'Heure Bleue with my name on. I did get spoilt with samples - face cream, mascara, Shalimar Souffle and Black Perfecto that I remember. I passed most of them on to DD as thanks for sterling translation work. She did also get 10ml of Black Perfecto I add hastily, before I can be accused of exploiting teenagers!

I'm not sure there is any method to what perfume I choose to wear. It is a constant tug between reducing the untrieds and enjoying something I love - which is how I started off today with a Gucci Guilty sample but ended up in beautiful Mitsouko.

Hello, welcome and hang on to your wallet, Splendid! Temptation beckons in every post!

MrsMacNally · 01/10/2017 10:05

It's very quick and arbitrary Green. Black Perfecto sounds interesting!

Reading the other thread about embarrassing perfumes and somebody used the expression wearing a " grown up going out " scent which took me back to my glory years when I used perfume to signify adult hood . Dior Addict is probably the closest now come to having a "grown up " scent - any other nominations?

explodingkittens · 01/10/2017 12:41

Puppy, I think 24 Faubourg is probably one of the most 'grown-up' scents I've worn. I sniffed it again yesterday and it just makes me think of furs and lipstick and 'set' hair - not me at all but I love it.

SOTD is Tobacco Vanille, which is really more like Honey Vanille on me, so I wish there was a bit more Tobacco. But it's a cosy, not-leaving-the-house perfume, so perfect for today which will be spent mainly on the sofa in pyjamas, then cooking a big roast beef supper with lots of red wine this evening.

I'm starting to think that if I owned an engraved bottle of L'Heure Bleue (or indeed any classic Guerlain) I might feel my life had reached some kind of pinnacle, Green Grin There is currently a huge bottle of Apres l'Ondee on eBay, in one of those amazing flacons with the pointy tops (technical term); I keep looking at it and dreaming of the kind of life I'd have to be living to own that...

MrsMacNally · 01/10/2017 13:13

They sound like our kind of people - hope some call over and get involved Smile

My go to grown up is Empreinte - sort of suede chypre. And lots of those bitter green or mossy 70s chypres seem good ways of feeling properly grown-up. (Paloma Picasso, and Y of course, but also Courant, Audace, Magie Noire). Not sure if I pick these because adults wore them when I was growing up or, following the Barbara Herman thesis, because they came from a time when women were claiming the right to be treated like grown ups and wearing interesting/difficult things for their own satisfaction?

Then also Youth Dew.

Mitsouko still feels a bit too grown-up! Is it the ultimate Grand Dame scent?

OP posts:
MrsPestilence · 01/10/2017 13:23

Yeah hoo, I am a Grand Dame Grin

Black Perfecto smells like MIL making a cherry bakewell. DD has a bottle and we managed to get may samples.

Lady Rose Lion is very grown up. But not for me. It still reminds me of something I can't remember Hmm

explodingkittens · 01/10/2017 13:28

Funny isn't it - I wear Youth Dew so don't think of it as a grown-up scent really (although I know it should definitely be on that list) because, well...I don't think of myself as a grown-up yet Grin

If we're talking Estee, I would add Private Collection I think, although I have put that on my burgeoning Christmas wish list so we'll see if I can live up to it!

Vol de Nuit is another - I don't think I'll ever be enough of a proper grown-up to wear that.

MrsMacNally · 01/10/2017 18:27

SotD TF Italian Cypress (courtesy of v kind perfumista Smile). I really like this - it's like a seriously chilled-out Yatagan (perhaps it's the shared basil and mint?). Got a distinct whiff of incense in the first hour too.

Might add EL Azuree to that list too. I haven't properly smelt Lady Rose Lion Pest.

OP posts:
boldlygoingsomewhere · 01/10/2017 18:48

Lady Rose Lion is a proper grown up scent and one I'm not ready for.

SOTD was Black Opium. I like the first whiff of fruitiness and then the settling down to the hint of musk.

SilverHawk · 01/10/2017 19:01

Well, I'm not going to Bldy Harrods!!! Pest
Ta, anyway

MrsPestilence · 01/10/2017 19:12

They do deliver Silver

What is it the Lady Rose Lion smells like? Something from the 70s or probably before.

Copal Azur again today. Very skin scent we put on cleavage. The squirty thing does not work on this sample, so I have to wrestle the top off and use it as a dabber. Which means I have to be quite awake so as not to spill it Sad would be ok for a 10 ml but not FB, cool incense, salty ; interesting. Try again another season.

MrsPestilence · 01/10/2017 19:17

Lady Rose Lion (Monkey Unicorn) - Commit to a real deep chypre fragrance, described by Luca Turin as "an inverted Mitsouko" which was nice. All the flowers and woods at the heart, cutrus fruits and peach on top, the oakmoss base and a top note of basil.

But I like Mitsouko Confused

OnTheSherry · 01/10/2017 19:17

Hello all (its 3).

I'm trying not to pop in too frequently and stay off Fragrantica, as I'm on a DEFINITE perfume buying ban for a couple of months. Honest, Guv.

SOTD was Guerlain Love Is All, oddly named and not much loved by true Guerlain lovers, but I like it when I want something light. Its freesia, powder and musk. Very simple and pretty.

My 'grown up going out' (love that phrase) perfume is Sisley Soir de Lune. Proper rich bitch chypre. Love it.

MrsPestilence · 01/10/2017 19:32

Sherry A fruity chypre fan Smile I could send you my Lady Rose Lion sample for you to analyse. You would be useful and not spending Grin

CheapTarnishedGlitter · 01/10/2017 19:46

Ooh MrsM DS 1 was in the PP Italian Cypress today! I love the smell but find it a bit too masculine, he's getting interested in mommy's "goink goink oil" (Don't ask me, I've no idea where that came from...) so It's a perfect match!

DS2 getting there although trying to administer his inhaler is a bit like wresting a very noisy octopus Sad

Still sitting on my hands rather than going for the rhubarb 4160... at the moment...

CheapTarnishedGlitter · 01/10/2017 19:47

That should have been mummy not mommy. I am in the Midlands but that one never caught on in our house...
