Green you could probably manage to justify a 40 door calendar for Lent Grin

Ahem, I think I probably could too, Pest. Blush What with being so very lapsed and remembering Lent in my childhood as a long, long stretch of dreariness and no sweets, chocolate, cake, crisps or biscuits...

Boldly beware the slippery slope of vintage! I started off by hunting down the vintage perfumes I had loved and those my mother had loved. The first whiff of a bottle of Youth Dew and I was transported across 30 years. Hope you love the Panache.

Today's sample is Gucci Guilty. It is a bit yuck. The only sample I've liked out of this Discovery Club box so far has been Jean Paul Gaultier Classique. The Perfume Society seems to have a far better hit rate.

Floofy, OneNight - I hope you're feeling brighter.Flowers

I think I need to scrub this one now.

BluebellGal · 30/09/2017 11:32

Thanks for the info about carnations- didn't know they smelt like cloves. I don't actually like cloves but blended in perfume it smells weird and wonderful. Thanks for Serge Leutens rec- i need to follow in Kittens footsteps and take a trip to Liberty - probably around the time of their Advent Calendar release. Oh dear I'll be going from zero to four this year!

SOTD is Joy Patou. I've been avoiding trying this one. It was too strong with too many white floral/ aldehydes for me. But now it's on my skin and it's developing I'm starting to appreciate its beauty....I still feel a little young and not glamorous enough for it though. Will see how it wears throughout the day

BluebellGal · 30/09/2017 11:33

Green - which perfume box are you using ?

GreenPolishToGo · 30/09/2017 11:33

4160 Tuesdays Up the Apples and Pears available half price now.

GreenPolishToGo · 30/09/2017 11:40

X-posted!

The Discovery Club box, Bluebell? This is the Classics 2016 one. It's the last of a batch that gathered dust while I frolicked among the 4160 samples.

I also need to make inroads on a backlog of Perfume Society boxes instead of just admiring them because they are so beautifully put together. Blush

OCSockOrphanage · 30/09/2017 13:41

Tam Dao............. wow! Loving this. Whiffs keep hitting my nose, and it is very happy.

MrsMacNally · 30/09/2017 14:04

And we could make it incense themed (that would be good way of getting through all those CdGs) with Seville a L'Aube for Easter week? Smile

OP posts:
YouAndYourFloofyCatNose · 30/09/2017 14:37

A Lent Perfume advent calendar sounds like an amazing idea, especially with the incense! We could finish with Séville a L’Aube? I’m liking this theme Smile

Continuing this theme, my SOTD is Eau Sacree, which was perhaps a little thoughtless as it is actually Yom Kippur. I may well need to atone for that! (I hope I don’t have to add the MN despised “light hearted” there as I’m sure you guys take this in the spirit it was intended Smile)

Seriously though, it is interesting to me how religion, especially Catholicism it seems, provides perfume inspiration/associations. It was amazing to see how strongly Eau Sacree reminded DH of his childhood. Despite being an atheist these days, I still find this aspect fascinating. (In the same way I found the Princess Diana article very interesting, despite not being a fan of the monarchy generally). Maybe it’s just because perfume itself is so interesting!

Hope everyone is having a nicely scented stress free weekend.

YouAndYourFloofyCatNose · 30/09/2017 14:39

Oh MrsMac I started typing and then got distracted by eBay, it took me so long to type it that I didn’t see your post before I posted mine! BlushGrin

Yo, joining this thread as a perfume whore.

My latest buy was Heure Bleue. Very nostalgic for me as my best friend's mum used to wear it. I liked the sample on my skin but now I actually own a bottle I dont find myself wanting to wear it 😣

I love Chanel and wear Allure Sensuelle a lot, currently considering getting a new Chanel but dithering between Eau Premiere, Cristalle and Gabrielle!

splendidisolation · 30/09/2017 14:46

Oh and No. 19 which I also love

Pestilentialone · 30/09/2017 15:00

Splendid welcome. Get yourself a decent size sample (2 ml ish) of your likely candidates and only go for a full bottle after each sample has been worn or a minimum of a week. It will save you from those embarrassing FBs that lurk at the back of a cupboard, reminding you how much they cost.

SoTD is Copal Azur by Aedes de Venustas. A cool salty oriental, no rich flowers, no warm spices, interesting. Will venture from wrists to body tomorrow.

explodingkittens · 30/09/2017 18:40

Hi splendid, welcome to the biggest bunch of enablers you'll ever meet Grin I sniffed L'Heure Bleue today, it is a beautiful, intriguing classic but a full bottle can seem like a big commitment! Hopefully you'll find occasions for it though...or you can just take it out and look at it now and again, such a lovely bottle!

So I did go a bit bonkers with spraying and sniffing today, but didn't actually buy anything. Well, except a pot of Guerlain Meteorites because a) they're so pretty and b) Gladys at the Guerlain counter in Selfridges was so helpful I felt bad about walking away having spent nothing... I sniffed the aforementioned L'Heure Bleue, Jicky and Mitsouko, and then she got Chamade and Apres l'Ondee out of her special secret drawer for me to try as well. Mitsouko shot me straight back to sitting at my very glamorous grandmother's dressing table and trying on her jewellery; it was strange and wonderful and a bit sad. Chamade I loved. Apres l'Ondee was oddly underwhelming but I think by that point I'd gone a bit nose-blind!

I have also confirmed that Frederic Malle scents do absolutely nothing for me at all. I'm not sure why; there is just something I can't connect with. I tried Lipstick Rose in Liberty and loathed it - it reminded me of being in hospital as a small child! I need to read the notes and work out why, but it was awful on me, almost nauseating.

Tried Heeley's Cardinal in Les Senteurs as well - utterly divine but very, very similar to Avignon so probably won't bother with a sample.

Am knackered. Home, bathed and in By The Fireplace with wine and Strictly.

MrsMacNally · 30/09/2017 18:41

Having a bad hair day (hormones?). So to cheer myself up with some perfume-related activity I bought a set of click-lid storage boxes in Aldi in order to rationalise things a bit. Was slightly more stressful than expected working out a classification to fit logical sub-sets into the available space...

Think I've cracked it now...Smile

Was hoping to flush out more swaps, and have found a few, but realise I'm getting better at choosing, don't go in for so many completely blind buys and am generally buying less than 10mls at a time. (I'm also rubbish at parting with anything even halfway interesting...).

Pestilentialone · 30/09/2017 18:49

You don't have to part with something interesting MrsM you just don't have to buy a FB

Enablers Shock us EK never, glad you had a good sniff today.

Pestilentialone · 30/09/2017 19:20

One review on fragrantica says Copal Azur smells like bathroom cleaner, WHAT BATHROOM CLEANER ARE YOU USING, I want it. Interesting is the word, incense, incense, incense in the coolest most controlled package going. Suddenly DH is torn between buying a blind bottle of something in TKMaxx or just rubbing up to me so we match.

OCSockOrphanage · 30/09/2017 19:27

EK, Chamade was one of my monogamies, so thrilled you liked it. And very interested to read that you felt the Cardinal and Avignon were similar. I like Cardinal lots and it's in the regular A/W rotation so I am relieved of the need to try Avignon too. And the Tam Dao sample is coming up for a refresher evening sortie spritz; IIRC you liked that too?

Congratulations to anyone who has wrassled their sample drawer into orderliness. The skill eludes me.

OCSockOrphanage · 30/09/2017 19:29

And a warm welcome to Splendid!

Judydreamsofhorses · 30/09/2017 20:10

SOTD is JM Wood Sage. Have been out for a massive burger and now home with Strictly on catch-up.

Hello, splendid. kittens I am a big fan of Meteorites, and am always in either that or Hourglass for a bit of glow.

explodingkittens · 30/09/2017 21:25

Yes, it was a bit of a toss-up between Hourglass and Meteorites but Guerlain wins for the lovely packaging and violet scent.

OC, yes, I do like Tam Dao a lot - wasn't sure of it on first wearing but have been persuaded. I only have a small sample though - I wish diptyque did those 10ml roller balls for all their fragrances and not just a couple. I know someone was talking about this upthread; surely there must be a market for smaller 10ml/20ml formulations?

MaryLennoxsScowl · 30/09/2017 21:35

How did you organise your samples, then? I can't figure out how to store them so I can find the one I want, some have the names printed on the bottle or on a sticker, but some have little cards you can't read until you've opened them (and some have lost their cards and are now anonymous!).

Today I'm in Tart's Knicker Drawer, which I liked when it went on but only 3 hours later has pretty much disappeared.

CheapTarnishedGlitter · 30/09/2017 21:37

I do love the idea of lent calendars! There's a market out there for subversive calendars that offer a chance to try out new vices while you steer clear of just one...

So yesterday was Coromandel- perfect for a conference with presenting, chairing and networking. Gives a good sense of "I should be here" if that makes any sense...

No Sotd today having left the house just before midnight with ds2 for an out of hours GP appointment to look at his breathing, and then spending most of the day on the Children's Ward...

Am trying to find more detail on 4160s advent calendars, but think Liberty might be the way to go this year.

SilverHawk · 30/09/2017 21:52

Well, DH has just got back from Geneva and couldn't find the Guerlain Shalimar Souffle Intense either :( He could have been 'man looking' as he had a rather jolly time! Pestilentialone does this perfume even exist? :s !
