BluebellGal · 15/09/2017 08:22

Floofy- I'm heading off on holiday today to somewhere that doesn't have TK Maxx. Good to hear Arperge is still good despite all the reformulations over the years. Will keep a look out for it.

BluebellGal · 15/09/2017 08:25

And well done kittens for getting through work yesterday

We're heading to airport now. I'm hungover and glad I packed and organised myself in advance

My DH has a lovely new deodorant that's smells so good I asked him what aftershave he's wearing! (It's Dove men care clean comfort spray)

MrsMacNally · 15/09/2017 08:32

Greetings to All! It's Friday Smile.

Can't decide on SotD - hoping a little sample of Kenzo Elephant is going to drop onto the mat later - may stay naked just in case.

Judy - tell me about Wrappings? I'm curious, but Clinique counters never seem to have it available to sniff.

PiaM - is your Bandit vintage? I usually love leather (Cabochard, Azuree etc etc), but I couldn't find a way to connect with the modern formulation.

HaHa - yes, Stash does feel like a potential staple for this time of year.

With you Green - why oh why did I pass on the wonderfully inky Black Velvet Cafe when it was half price?

OneNight - can marvel at the wonder of Timbuktu, but the simultaneous hot/cold thing gives me a headache! Enjoying Amour Nocturne and still loving Traversee du Bosphore. Both very easy to wear. So lots of appreciation this week for BD Smile.

Ps. huge bottle of Vent Vert in TK for 19.99 - no idea though about the current formulation?

I've got Eclat d’Arpège it is the whole lilac. Like someone put a lilac bush in full bloom through a garden shredder (at dawn), then sprinkled a few other flowers on to make it look less like carnage. It is fresh, flowery, green and a bit woody with a hint of tea. DH's favourite, very suitable for work, definitely a spring type of fragrance.
If you like JLo Still, EA Green Tea, SJP Covet it will be your sort of thing.

MrsMacNally · 15/09/2017 08:37

I love lilac - that's going on my sniff list Pest.

Not sure if there is a bit of lilac in the PW/CdG Girl along with the violet. A modern woody twist on purple flowers.

MrsMc- no, my Bandit is new oddly (for me) but still magnificent. I'm hoping to eventually score an old one. It's on my ebay search (massive) list. I actually don't get any strong leather from it at all (I love leather notes) just very very grown up and unafraid to wear what I want notes Grin

I'm trying to try all my untried things- 4160s Paris today. Meh. Like Y and Yvresse's love child. Fizzy and sweet, and almost gone already after less than half an hour. I want to wear London this afternoon- school award ceremony and I want to let my perfumista colleague smell it.

Wrappings will be out in the big stores soon, I'd have thought. They bring it out at Christmas time, like EL bring BG out in the summer. It's not Christmassy at all, so I don't know why they do that. It is, however, very very lovely.

Pestilentialone · 15/09/2017 09:03

SoTD is Cuoio by Pal Zileri, basically a much cheaper version of Tuscan Leather. It may actually be nicer, the thyme is strong in the opening.

PerfumeIsAMessage · 15/09/2017 09:27

Just reading the blurb of 4160 Paris 48. I'm astonished it's marketed as an oakmossy chypre (though that's obviously what caught my eye when I ordered it)

My arm just smells of Y now. Confused

boldlygoingsomewhere · 15/09/2017 09:29

Just catching up with all the perfume love on this thread.

SOTD is Shazam by 4160 Tuesday. I'm in love with this at the moment - I keep reaching for it and my other scents aren't getting a look in!

thecatfromjapan · 15/09/2017 10:07

Good morning everyone. It's been lovely reading everyone's updates (good luck kittens).

Just found this on Twitter: women's suffrage and scent!

Pestilentialone · 15/09/2017 13:27

The thyme in Cuoio retreated after 20 mins or so and it is now a luscious blend of leather, saffron and raspberries.

Pestilentialone · 15/09/2017 14:34

100 ml AP b&m £17.99
And some custard

MrsMacNally · 15/09/2017 14:40

OK, am going to try it again PiaM.

I almost always layer Paris 1948 with Empreinte, and think I then arrive at just what I was expecting! There is another 4160 listed as a chypre where I just can't quite catch the moss...I like/need an industrial blast. will try and remember which one...

Had just given up on the Postie when the Elephant arrived. Fabulous and oddly familiar (wonder if someone I know has worn this or whether it's spawned some aroma-chemical doppleganger? And I had the oddest childhood memory flash but it was over in a mili-second).

Early impression (20 mins in...) I'm eating a big bowl of kulfi, outside a temple, on the edge of an imaginary forest! It's fresh and rich all at once - really multi-dimensional smell. One for the Christmas list!

Pestilentialone · 15/09/2017 16:38

4160 have a few chypre perfumes

  1. Doe in the Snow - crisp fruity chypre
  2. The Great Randello - gourmande chypre
  3. Lady Rose Lion - Deep floral chypre
  4. Goddess of love and Perfume - the ultimate floral, fruity chypre, with added musk.
and
  1. Paris 1948 - Classic chypre
oh and - 6. Rosa Ribes - A blackcurrant, rose chypre with citrus fruits, moss, myrrh and musk, Sarah’s own personal perfume.

That's quite a variety, off to research chypres and see if I agree

Badders08 · 15/09/2017 17:01

Some of those sound lovely

YouAndYourFloofyCatNose · 15/09/2017 17:10

I must get more into chypres. I have really overlooked them, and I'm not sure why, I think it's because they feel too "grown up" for me which is ridiculous. I feel yet another list coming on Grin

MrsMac you really made me smile with your "staying naked for the post" as I always have that dilemma. I shall try Elephant as I have loved every Kenzo I've tried, even the ubiquitous flowery one. Badders you definitely should try Amour, I feel you would like it! I have some PP dupe which is very close IMO, can I send you some? PM me if you would like.

Pest we used to have a huge lilac tree at my parents' house and I loved it (my mother was paranoid about us being poisoned by it IIRC) so I will also try the Eclat now

CatfromJapan what a lovely article that was! I'm secretly very fond of all the Yardley Violet stuff so can be proud of the Violet feminist leanings Smile

I still haven't made it to TK Maxx and I just know when I make it, that all the good stuff will be gone Grin

Badders08 · 15/09/2017 17:18

I have a long list to try when I'm in town again 😁
Thanks floofy that's really kind x
I love me a bit of oakmoss chypre 👍

MrsMacNally · 15/09/2017 17:22

See Pest - I don't get 'chypre' for most of those. Think it was The Great Randello that I had been thinking about - a huge and gorgeous gourmand, but I don't pick up on the moss at all.

Mind you, I feel almost the same about vintage Femme (have to really strain to pick up a chypre vibe), so this may simply be about the shortcomings of my nose!

Or is this classification just wider than I think...?

OP posts:
MrsMacNally · 15/09/2017 17:26

Don't worry Floof- TK clearly gearing up for beauty event/Xmas: loads of perfume seems to be arriving every day. Lots of sets of miniatures today.

Pestilentialone · 15/09/2017 17:27

And of course the original Agent Provocateur is also a floral chypre. I now have 100 ml of the stuff as it was very cheap. Luckily it smells just fine.

TKMaxx had loads of Alien, Victoria Secrets, Victoria Beckham, oodles of Green Tea and many of its flankers. Only tempting things was AP Petale Noir but I resisted. Only one Library of Fragrance. Plus a general splattering of other stuff, certainly stocking up for the run up to Christmas.

Pestilentialone · 15/09/2017 17:33

Chypres are obviously a bigger group than most of us thought.

Chypre fragrances are warm and dry and almost all built round a woody, mossy accord of bergamot, oakmoss, patchouli and labdanum

PerfumeIsAMessage · 15/09/2017 17:39

See, when someone asks me what I like in a perfume- like the fella did at Somerset House, I say "chypre/green/aldehydes/galbanum"

I am now in London 1969 (I even unpacked one of my shipped over boxes to find it because I really wanted this for this afternoon) It's so lovely and unusual. Not many perfumes can claim to go from lemony citrus to something almost resembling a Tauer spice within about 20 minutes!

I have Lady Rose Lion but haven't tried it yet.

explodingkittens · 15/09/2017 17:44

Rosa Ribes sounds amazing!

MrsMacNally · 15/09/2017 18:07

Am I right that Centrepiece is half price this week? Should be exercising restraint having just ordered Rome 19??, but my previous 9ml of Centrepiece dropped clean through the cardboard packaging as I lifted it out of the delivery box, so I only have a couple mls that I managed to salvage from the shards the on the floor Sad.

It's very lovely once I'm through the oddly chemical opening (just my skin?). I need to try side by side but from memory I wonder if it smells like a distant relative of the Kenzo I'm wearing today?
