Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. In order to make use of the below form and join in I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

NEW ADDITIONS since last thread:

Do I Really Need to Wear Sunscreen Every Single Day of the Year?

Understanding Which Sunscreen(s) to Buy

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

If you pose a question and we need more contextual information to answer properly we may ask you to fill in the following form. Please only use this form when asked, unsolicited forms will be deleted. Responses to the form can be found here

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

AUGUST 2017: Sunscreen is pretty much non-negotiable at the moment (not that it’s ever not Wink), RL bumps have been met in the road for some, unfortunately. Grief sucks but we do our best to offer a bit of comfort even if it is just something as inane as skincare chat Smile. Some of us are lucky enough to be nerding out in French pharmacies whilst pretending to do that holiday thing, the Shelf Porn Off is still on…

I can't believe we're on thread 9 Shock

Thanks for all suggestions..will read through everything again and make purchases!
Love the grey hall olli .
My whole house needs painted desperately ..it has been 6 years. Never seem to have the free cash to even consider it.

userallusedup · 29/08/2017 20:07

Bo the BF thing really confused me too - especially as some do use it for boyfriend and I've seen it used for best friend too. I've only recently worked out what EBF is, still not sure on PFB and many, many others.

botemp · 29/08/2017 20:23

Projectile Fatty Breasts? It's much more fun to just make them up

OP posts:
miffy2 · 29/08/2017 20:45

Thanks, bo.

I have used the Timeless one before and AFAIR it began to oxidise before I finished it, which led me to hunt for alternatives.

I will look into Nufountain.

yongnian · 29/08/2017 20:49

Good going on the painting olli!
Been bamboozling myself on tk maxx skincare...I'm literally blind now and going Tonymolyschmolylanolinéchristianbreton in some kind of branded mantra...
Time to 'fess up - I've sheeped. I was ordering from TO some more HA and wanted to try the 30% vit c...so then I needed to make up for shipping...and then I saw your post about rservatrol bo...and I ordered it...Blush
So now I've got the bit between my teeth and am tempted by some Huda palettes I've seen on eBay...help.

botemp · 29/08/2017 20:54

Well at the risk of sounding overly sensible... are you not worried the Huda stuff might be fakes? I'm fine with buying things that aren't all that popular on eBay since no one can be arsed to fake them but Huda is v. popular in the YT demographic, isn't it?

OP posts:
userallusedup · 29/08/2017 21:47

I'm a sheep too 🐑🐑🐑 especially with TO stuff BAAAAAAAAAA Grin and I should have ordered from Deciem as looks like all their new TO stuff is in stock. Oh well I don't need anything RIGHT NOW so will do me no harm to wait and use some of current stash up.

Off to look at Huda now (BAAAAAAAA again)

Bo I had PFB in my mind as Peeing Farting Baby but like your suggestion better Grin

yongnian · 29/08/2017 22:08

Oh. I never thought about that bo (yes, I am gullible). I did wonder why they were so cheap Blush. I think all reason has left me - I'm blaming it on the fact I'm about to move house and am pretending not to be stressed. (And therefore really shouldn't be wasting any money or time and effort fiddling about or getting myself ripped off)
Oh dear, thank you for saving me from myself. Cringe.

Ollivander84 · 29/08/2017 22:13

Cult beauty has Huda, might be worth keeping an eye for a discount code

JDSTER · 29/08/2017 22:15

Gosh, busy on here today! I was coming on to talk about new stuff from TO but I see Bo has beaten me to it. Tant just to add, I have same product line up as you. I use Vit C then toleriane a.m, retinoid nights I follow with toleriane and nights I use niacin I add buffet. I haven't felt the need for the extra hydration of buffet or MMHC but will as we move into autumn/central heating weather. I wouldn't use buffet and MMHC together. I've got unopened copper isolate but I'm very bad for stock piling stuff Blush.

I stopped myself buying that 'is clinical' honey face wash on VH ( I've used it before it was discontinued) as I've got an unopened NIOD Sanskrit saponins and unopened LRP facewash not yet available in U.K. will be by the time I get round to using

Bo/Tant I was following some of the threads on site stuff while I was away. All a bit heated and scary. I'm happy sticking with this thread where we generally 'know' each other and look out for one another.

mint the dermalogica eye cream sample is power firm one.

yongnian · 29/08/2017 22:37

Do you sign up for codes from cult beauty olli or do you have to have bought from there?
jdster this is a nice friendly 'place' I think too. It's pretty much the only thread I've posted on consistently for that reason, although have been on SEN children often, which also very supportive and an online community.
Off to bed now, am home alone tomorrow with the 3yo and she'll have me on the ropes by 9.30am, no doubt...so lovely...so very exhausting

JDSTER · 29/08/2017 22:43

yong people saying that more recently some troll types turning up on SEN boards Sad and people who have found great support there in the past just won't post on there anymore

Tantpoke · 30/08/2017 00:00

Bo & JD I'll just carry on as I am them as I seem to be doing ok with my regime :)

I'm getting a really bad case of restless leg syndrome in the evening which is stoping me from sleeping properly, dull ache in right leg, very annoying. Have been taking pain killers but tonight I've tackled it with bananas for the extra potassium Hmm and um prosecco to knock me out and a fetching pair of compression stockings Grin. We shall see if I crash out before 3am (fingers crossed)

Ollivander84 · 30/08/2017 06:16

They usually email them out or I google or stalk their FB page!

mintmagnummm · 30/08/2017 07:54

Thanks JDSTER but I can't use that one due to the silicone ingredient in it (cyclo something or other) as it gives me tiny whiteheads. Thanks so much for the offer though Flowers

miffy2 · 30/08/2017 08:24

Re CultBeauty, if you register with them and fill out a form you get 15% off your first order...think the code is YOU15 but it won't apply until you fill out the form (based on your skin type, interests etc).

Pupsiecola · 30/08/2017 08:42

Has anyone ever ordered from Strawberrynet? I'm looking at a leave-in conditioner...

MrsT2007 · 30/08/2017 09:07

I filled in 'the form'

I really would love to have nice skin for the first time in my life....

MrsT2007 · 30/08/2017 09:11

I am really struggling with spfs

I have no idea where to start. I need one, I know. But I'm mega allergic to most chemical sunscreens. So 99% of moisturisers with them in are out. Only one I've found is moogoo anti ageing one but it's a bit heavy for my skin.

The body shop ones all have allergy causing ingredients.

I'd love to try a 'proper' skincare system but I haven't got a bloody clue where to start!

botemp · 30/08/2017 10:07

JDTER, I haven't caught up with all of it yet as it just seems to be snowballing. I don't always feel that much of an authority on it, I've only known of MN for about a year and a half. I mostly stuck around predominantly on the S&B boards because I like the company but in that 1.5yr I have noticed that the trolling issue is massive. They were easy to spot in AIBU but they started infiltrating the other more sensitive boards, where trolls used to be more of a nuisance that had people overinvested as events unrolled there seems to be a rise in the emotional 'trolling' that's really damaging and seems to be causing the outrage? MNHQ are definitely not as quick as they used to be with taking them down, I remember when I was first on here most threads I never got to even read, as soon as you clicked on them in trending they were already down. I've spotted it in the bereavement board too and subsequently no longer offer any support there anymore after getting burned. Horrible to hear the SEN board is being targeted too.

yong, yes either 15% when you sign up (or free shipping) then there's the profile discount. You can also put in September as your birthday and the first of the month they'll give you a 15% off code for the entire month. They have the occasional deals I'm waiting on it for some more Surratt, oh the shame sometimes 15% off, sometimes free shipping, sometimes goody bags with high spends or a fixed amount off when you spend over x amount. Signing up for their emails is worthwhile if you actually read them.

Pupsie, I've never bought from Strawberrynet but reviews are very mixed on it, much like Sasa they have authentic stuff but people have ended up with fakes. Welcome back from the holidays btw, was it odd coming home to the new house?

MrsT2007, welcome! As stated in the OP "Please only use this form when asked, unsolicited forms will be deleted." - We tend to only ask someone to use that form if the question they're posing requires more context to answer properly. For getting started on a 'proper' skincare system have a read through of the linked sheets in the OP to get yourself started and orient what direction you'd like to go for your skin type/condition and then we can discuss further Smile.

For Mineral SPFS with some sort of cosmetic elegance there are the following:

tinted (generally higher cosmetic elegance):

SkinCeuticals Sheer Physical Defense SPF50
Neostrata Sheer Physical Protection SPF50
Exuviance Sheer Daily Protector SPF 50
Bioderma Photoderm Nude Touch SPF 50+ - (only really suitable if you get a good colour match in the limited shade range as it's almost like a foundation and only if you're oily or combo)
Murad City Skin Age Defense Broad Spectrum SPF 50
Avene Mineral Sun Fluid SPF50+ (also comes in untinted)

untinted:

Bioderma Photoderm MINERAL SPF 50+
Clinique Mineral Sunscreen Fluid for Face Broad Spectrum SPF 50
Kiehl's Ultra Light UV Defense Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50

Avene Mineral Sun Fluid SPF50+ (also comes in tinted)

Hi all 😊 Hopefully a quick question...
I've been using TO retinoid 2% with no issues and now use it most nights. I use alpha h aha - either serum or liquid gold on the other 2 nights. I have Paula's Choice clinical 1% retinol to try, how would I introduce it? Thanks

botemp · 30/08/2017 11:06

Do you use LG on its own or topped with something else? I think for the first 1-2 wks I'd use the retinol on its own and start off using it 1-2x a week. You could consider using LG with moisturiser on top if you usually use it on its own but the PC 1% is considered to be quite full on so it may be a better safe than sorry scenario.

Pupsiecola · 30/08/2017 11:11

Thanks Bo. It was a bit odd tbh. On holiday I kept forgetting where I lived fleetingly lol. It was also lovely though. We really do love our new home :-)

Can anyone comment on my musings above re not burning but defo tanning (unplanned) so does this mean SPF didn't work?! (My skin is usually very prone to burning unless protected. I guess I've just not done a fly and flop before. Have I damaged my skin with UVA because I am a bit tanned?). Thank you and sorry if this is a dumb ass question.

botemp · 30/08/2017 11:20

Have you damaged your skin? Technically yes but not massively so that you'll wake up a crone in the morning and considering the full on active routine most have on here you're reversing a lot of that damage anyhow.

The reason why you've tanned is most likely down to not using enough sunscreen (layering is best) and/or it wore off quicker than you expected/are used too (due to sweating, rubbing, or otherwise) and/or you didn't reapply quickly enough. Every 2hrs is the general guideline but someone very fair may need to do so every 30 mins on the equator/high altitudes where someone naturally darker can last far longer.

Also, SPF is generally considered the last line of defense, not the whole sum of it. So avoiding the sun roughly from 11-15, wearing a UPF sun hat, sunglasses, UPF protective clothing, basically embracing a burka etc. etc.

Which sunscreen were you using?

Sad to hear that about the SN boards, haven't been on in a while so was unaware....people really do need the support from genuine posters there (as of course they do elsewhere on the forum). Can't see what people get out of trolling.
pupsie I'm about to move house too - have moved a lot previously but been in this house now for a long time - any top tips from your recent experience??
I was wondering the same thing about my tan despite spf 50...guess didn't apply frequently.
Mind you, I saw an interesting photo that some university had produced of how little of the face actually gets covered when people think they've fully applied, done with thermal imaging or something like that...it was quite shocking and effective and has made me try to be much more thorough. Sorry can't remember where I saw it so can't link. (Useless, I know)
