Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. In order to make use of the below form and join in I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

NEW ADDITIONS since last thread:

Do I Really Need to Wear Sunscreen Every Single Day of the Year?

Understanding Which Sunscreen(s) to Buy

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

If you pose a question and we need more contextual information to answer properly we may ask you to fill in the following form. Please only use this form when asked, unsolicited forms will be deleted. Responses to the form can be found here

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

AUGUST 2017: Sunscreen is pretty much non-negotiable at the moment (not that it’s ever not Wink), RL bumps have been met in the road for some, unfortunately. Grief sucks but we do our best to offer a bit of comfort even if it is just something as inane as skincare chat Smile. Some of us are lucky enough to be nerding out in French pharmacies whilst pretending to do that holiday thing, the Shelf Porn Off is still on…

I can't believe we're on thread 9 Shock

Thanks Bo I usually liquid gold with nothing on so I'll use my moisturiser afterwards and just moisturiser the other nights. Will try the PC once and see how I go. Am I ok to continue BHA in the mornings?

Tantpoke · 30/08/2017 12:08

Does anyone get small patches of vitiligo on their face from being in the sun?

My son seems to get them, a few years ago when he got a bit burnt I applied Nivea spf 50 for kids on him, bought in Greece where we were, and it caused dry excema type dry patches. Ever since he has these white patches after being in the sun. They disappear once his tan goes.
Any ideas if this could ever be rectified with a product?

yongnian · 30/08/2017 13:21

tant I have a tiny patch in my hairline. As far as I know, there's not much that can be done about it. Think treatment doesn't get offered until it's quite widespread and even then its unreliable, from what I've read.

Ollivander84 · 30/08/2017 13:30

I have vitiligo on my hand and it's spreading. GP diagnosed it but no treatment discussed
You can see it on my hand here but it's on my arm too

Pupsiecola · 30/08/2017 15:32

Thanks Bo. I used one of the Bioderma factor 50s as mentioned on here.

I want one of those hat's Dr. Sam raves about but thought it too expensive, given I would only wear it for about one week of the year. Maybe I will reconsider...

I took no make up away with me, and I didn't bother blow drying my hair. The latter has made me realise that I want to be able to leave it to dry naturally more (I have mentioned my red neck on here before and I am sure the blow drying (my shoulder length hair with a big round brush so very targeted in that area) isn't helping. The product I want to order from Strawberrynet is a Carol's Daughter leave-in conditioner. I have actually ordered it directly from their website and am having it delivered to a hotel in New York, where my husband will be next week.

Pupsiecola · 30/08/2017 15:35

I am considering this method of thread vein treatment for my face. Has anyone heard of it/tried it?

www.drnewmansclinic.co.uk/

miffy2 · 30/08/2017 16:11

Too late for you Pupsie but I order from strawberrynet all the time and have done for over 10 years. I have only once had a problem with a YSL (I think) mascara that was pretty dry when I opened it up. They refunded me as soon as I contacted them.

Occasionally you will be charged customs & duty (the purple ribbons they put on their packages are like a beacon for the Customs guys ;) ) but they refund any charges including admin fees, via an online form. Not many non-EU companies offer this so it is, to me, a bonus.

Tantpoke · 30/08/2017 17:21

olli yong I think it must be fairly common then in small areas where skin has maybe been compromised i.e. Sunburnt, burnt or it just appears for no reason

Olli I picked up my sale boots today from jigsaw, they are lush. They had some gorgeous clothes in some of which isn't even online yet so well worth checking out if you live near a shop.
I treated myself to a wine coloured jumper which was super flattering, the perfect cut for my body.
I would have browsed for longer only I had both kids with me, which is probably a good thing. I only tried on the jumper as it was hanging above the chair I plonked them both on.

MrsT2007 · 30/08/2017 18:32

Thanks Botemp

I'm going to try the Avene one as I like much of their range and it's reasonably priced too. Off to try and locate it!

Going to order some Hada Labo HA as I suspect I have dehydrated skin. There seems to be a gazillion but I went for the 'premium' one 😬

I can feel my chin growing an enormous cystic spot. Oh joy.

Am I the only person who has the contradictory issues of spots and starting to age. Hmph.

miffy2 · 30/08/2017 18:49

Re Hada Labo...I see lotion, milk and toner. Is it the Toner I need (looking for a good HA layer, similar I guess to Pestle & Mortar HA serum which is so far my HG item)?

botemp · 30/08/2017 19:38

Shop, BHA in the morning shouldn't be an issue.

Tant, Vitiligo is mostly a case of management to contain it (which is daily application of a mineral sunscreen), there isn't too much that can be done about it.

Pupsie, I don't think Uniqlo will have them anymore but they had quite a selection of UPF hats, basic but easy for travel. Their sportswear is also UPF rated, not a surprise really since they're Japanese but one of the few who do it on a budget I think. The one Dr. Sam recced wasn't that crazy expensive IIRC but I was balking at the shipping I think. What was it called again, something stupid with Bae?

MrsT, make sure you're getting the slim packaging not the tube (that one is more like a traditional gloopy SPF). If you can't find it easily, Easyparapharmacie will have it.

Spots and ageing aren't that contradictory at all since hormones play such a large part in it.

Speaking of EPP if anyone is in need of a lot of stuff from them they're doing codes currently (they're on the front page), certain amount off with a minimum spend in tiers.

miffy2, officially I don't think they do a toner. What we call a toner they call a lotion in Japan (and strangely enough in France too, I think it's a science definition). Milk is somewhat in between a lotion and moisturiser but it generally gets ignored as a product by most. So the more watery version is the standard lotion (white and light bluish packaging) and the Premium version (red and gold packaging) is more viscous/serum like. I think as a comparable to P&M I'd go with the Premium.

RenardeRenarde · 30/08/2017 19:57

tantpoke Is it definitely vitiligo or could it be pityriasis versicolour? It often starts looking slightly darker or drier than the surrounding skin (wondering if that's what the eczema looking bits really were?) and strong sunlight bleaches it white, so it looks like vitiligo patches. I got it occasionally in my teens (v. Common in young adults/teens) and it clears up easily with antifungal cream or wash.
The NHS have a useful page about it if you google.

Btw sorry to burst in everyone, I've read the thread from the start but never felt the need to post :)

yongnian · 30/08/2017 20:02

tant I'm not altogether sure, but I think my small patch may have occurred around the time I - ahem - knackered up my forehead skin using some retin-a ointment, giving myself a protracted case of seborrhoeic dermatitis in the process..(before this thread!!!!) .it was only when it finally cleared, I noticed it..so maybe you're right when you say where skin has beeen compromised...like the sound of your jumper btw
mrst no, not the only one...much better now but I have had cystic spots and am actually aged, not just ageing....hormonal, as bo says....
I may spend the evening in EPP now, browsing their discount tier thingies...
Oh yes and thanks to various people for the cult beauty sign-up discounts, offers etc...cunning!

MrsT2007 · 30/08/2017 20:03

There's discounts 😱

Tantpoke · 30/08/2017 20:20

renarde thank you so much for posting I will look into that, in fact I can take him to the Dr's tomorrow.

I have no idea what it is actually so if it is pityriasis versicolour then at least it can be cleared up. I'll also let my neighbour know as her daughter gets it to, they are all pre teens.

And the fungal part of it could be from the pool on holiday, where I got my sodding ear infection so that makes sense.

mintmagnummm · 31/08/2017 18:31

Anyone here rate urban decay naked 1 palette?

Ollivander84 · 31/08/2017 20:36

one more wall to go and I am DONE Grin

🐌 Fantastic Skincare: Hot Snails, Summer in the City - Now with added shelf porn!
Tantpoke · 31/08/2017 20:57

Renarde Yes the Dr confirmed it was Pityriasis versicolour, so thank you for that Smile I wouldn't have bothered taking him to the Dr if you hadn't mentioned it. Have been given a relevant prescription.
Bo I will definitely be chasing him around with the spf Grin
Olli it looks really good, much lighter now than the original photos, and very neat. It seems to have a slight lilac hue which I'm loving.
Enid are you ok? that shampoo is not working for me after all, so on the hunt for something new have you found anything with magical properties yet?

mintmagnummm · 31/08/2017 21:45

Well done olli you should be extremely proud of yourself

Shop · 31/08/2017 21:49

Lovely walks Olli

Mint I've not got that but I do have naked basics which is lovely

Shop · 31/08/2017 22:03

😁 * walls

Ollivander84 · 31/08/2017 22:03

I'm all done and am not moving off the sofa for 10 mins. Then I probably should eat!

EnidButton · 01/09/2017 00:35

Looking good Olli!

Tant I'm ok thank you Smile Lurking around. I'm quite liking the Lush Big shampoo. It's not The One though. On the expensive side for the speed I go through a tub and it's very stripping. Does give a brilliant shine and if I use it with the Ultimate Blends conditioner that I love, it cancels out the stripping thing. They do little tubs if you fancy trying it. Weird to use, it's chunky bits of salt in liquid.

Mint I have Naked 1 and 2. I prefer 2 because I find it cooler toned so suits me more but I do like 1 as well. They're all I use now.

mintmagnummm · 01/09/2017 06:28

Cool thank you, think I'll have to go in store and have a look at the different colours and ask the urban decay lady which one she thinks would suit me best.

mintmagnummm · 01/09/2017 09:30

I feel like my skin is missing out on a drink of water for hydration step! The problem is I think HA makes my skin even more dehydrated, I've tried a few ha serums and all make my face look and feel dehydrated:-( so what can I use?? I'm happy with my cleanser, day and night creams and spf but I'm struggling with the hydration step Confused can anyone help? I'd rather it be easily available in the uk which I know narrows it down even more! Oh meant to say I didn't like the Superdrug serum either (think that's got ha in it too anyway)
