Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. In order to make use of the below form and join in I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

NEW ADDITIONS since last thread:

Do I Really Need to Wear Sunscreen Every Single Day of the Year?

Understanding Which Sunscreen(s) to Buy

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

If you pose a question and we need more contextual information to answer properly we may ask you to fill in the following form. Please only use this form when asked, unsolicited forms will be deleted. Responses to the form can be found here

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

AUGUST 2017: Sunscreen is pretty much non-negotiable at the moment (not that it’s ever not Wink), RL bumps have been met in the road for some, unfortunately. Grief sucks but we do our best to offer a bit of comfort even if it is just something as inane as skincare chat Smile. Some of us are lucky enough to be nerding out in French pharmacies whilst pretending to do that holiday thing, the Shelf Porn Off is still on…

I can't believe we're on thread 9 Shock

The Ethylated one, it's really good.

BagelGoesWalking · 29/08/2017 00:50

Skinful here are some:
The Ordinary HA is £5.90 (30ml), La Roche Posay Hydraphase serum is approx £20 (30ml), Hadalabo Gokujun Premium Hyaluronic Solution is £10 for 170ml (Amazon/eBay).

MilfordFound · 29/08/2017 01:42

Anyone used SR Skincare?
SR Skincare
Seem to be good value and comparable to The Ordinary in terms of price and single ingredient focus.
The all natural ingredients/organic ingredients isn't something I specifically look for, but might be of interest to others on here.
There's different strengths of various acids, but it doesn't give a ph for each one. Also says salicyclic acid peel shouldn't be used if you have Raynaud's disease. Er... is this true? I have raynauds and I've been using salicyclic for the past year! Oops.

Still loving the Cosrx 92 snail cream. It's wonderful. And no pilling at all which is something I ususally get with all moisturisers. I've been able to use TO azaleic acid on top without pilling. I was beginning to lose hope I'd ever be able to fit that in my routine due to constant texture issues.

I'm hoping to get a cheap eye cream to help with my under eye dehydration, to use on top of cosrx. I might have a wander in tk maxx to see if they have anything.

DamnDeDoubtanceIsSpartacus · 29/08/2017 08:29

I use SR skincare, I get my acids from there, alongside Bravura.

They are good, you can get some decent strength ones too. I haven't tried any of there other products but really recommend the acids.

I use the Cosrx snail goo too, I'm on my third bottle. It is good isn't it, perfect for layering and so calming on the skin.

Does anyone else use any Amie products? I received a few samples in my beauty box and bought the matte moisturiser, it smells gorgeous and makes a great matte cream.

Pupsiecola · 29/08/2017 10:18

I'm back, after a very relaxing, fun week in Mallorca (stayed in the North - it was stunning).

What have I missed?

Holiday success - not one of us (me, DH, two DSs) burned once. But we are all tanned (as tanned as I get). We used factor 50 daily, reapplying, and we applied it at least half an hour before we went in the pool/sea. We sat in the shade, always. So, I'm really pleased that no-one got burnt. But I expected to come back the same colour as I left. Clearly I don't understand the sun and skin very well. Does this mean UVA go through too?!

botemp · 29/08/2017 10:23

Sorry I had missed your question there, Skinful. Standard HA recs are Buffet from TO (not the HA + B5, it's proven far too problematic on here and elsewhere), Hylamide SubQ Anti-Age, NIOD MMHC, Hada Labo Premium Lotion, Kohaku-Hada Amber Lotion, Vichy Mineral 89 amongst others. There's the cheapy Supredrug Simply Pure as well but I think that's more suited to dehydration due to a compromised skin barrier rather than age related.

For retinol, I think the 2% Advanced Retinoid is an easy one to start off with. LRP Redermic is also decent.

Just received the Victoria Health Newsletter and TO have released a string of new products, specifically Retinols, the Advanced Retinoid is being renamed. Like the disappointing sheep that I am, I've just placed an order with TO (quite miraculously it was all in stock Shock). My AR 2% is nearing its end I'm now going to try the 5% - which is really more like 0.5% so a bit punchier than the LRP (0.3) and the AR (estimated to be somewhere around 0.25-0.33). They've discontinued the Retinol 1% too.

I also picked up the new Resveratrol and Ferulic Acid serum which basically means you can boost their 23% Vit C and 30% Vit C into SkinCeuticals territory without copyright infringement but all the added efficacy. On the back of the positive reviews so far on the 30% Vit C I also picked that up but since I still have the Skinceuticals to try (still on the Medik8 for a week or two) it'll be a bit before I get to TO 30% + the antioxidant cocktail.

Newsletter here for those interested in the new lineup. NIOD also have a new pigmentation product out, the PR copy on that one is ehm... interesting to say the least.

SR Skincare gets mixed reviews, a few of the acids contain alcohol in them at high amounts which can make them quite drying and irritating. A few of the peels were popular but I think due to regulations they're not considered to be the same anymore, although that may be Bravura. Can't remember.

I haven't come across that with Raynaud's specifically, only to be cautious when pregnant, that it can interfere with certain blood thinning medication, and not to use if you have an aspirin intolerance/allergy.

Tantpoke · 29/08/2017 13:24

looking good Olli are you happy with it?

When I bought my first flat years ago I painted the hallway a deep dark red and then had to immediately rush out and buy a different paint because it looked like an abattoir, deep blood red colour

Oh god I posted on a thread here I hadn't read properly and got completely slated and shot down and of course couldn't explain myself as it would've just looked like an excuse arghh - there are some real meanies on here Confused

Ollivander84 · 29/08/2017 13:33

I love it, it's just taking me ages! I hate the cutting in near the ceiling

Tantpoke · 29/08/2017 13:42

Olli Are you putting masking tape up to get a nice clean line? I'm impressed you've done as much as you have tbh.

I've been wanting to paint my hallway for ages now and my bedroom ceiling from where the small roof above the bay window once leaked. The paint is half peeled off Blush

I've got a new laptop and I keep touching the screen like its my iPad Hmm

Well my stock pile of lrp toleraine fluid has arrived and its dated 2020 so I'm happy about that. Tempted to buy more, whats the most of one item you guys have stockpiled at any one time?

Ollivander84 · 29/08/2017 13:48

I'm not because the stupid ceiling paint comes off if you so much as breathe near it new build rubbish so I'm free hand and using a paint guard metal spatula

Tantpoke · 29/08/2017 14:00

Bo I need your help please its about how many layers of products I can and should wear.

For example if I wear TO vit C I'll generally just apply my toleraine fluid over the top, I did try my TO buffet which worked fine but wasn't sure if it was necessary or not Confused

When I apply the TO niacimide its the same as above and with the azeilic acid I just apply it on its own

Soon I'll be back on the retinoid 2% (I apply this alone and follow with buffet or toleraine) and I'll start trialling the lactic acid 5%
plus theres the Niod copper amino isolate and Niod MMHC I'll be incorporating into my routine, I have used these before, beginning of last year. I think I'll be following these with buffet, high silicone primer and foundation not entirely sure tbh

botemp · 29/08/2017 14:04

Very tempted to say, you missed a spot wall, OlliGrin. Cutting in requires a good brush that needs spending on and a steady hand and a shit ton of patience, I've never gotten good results with masking tape myself.

I don't know what it is with MN lately, Tant. I know there's a bit of a mutiny happening over on Site Stuff but haven't really properly caught up what it's all about but it appears that the AIBU mentality and nitpicking an OP unasked, seems to be permeating other boards now. It's getting quite tiring really, S&B was always a bit of a happy safe place with the rare exceptions of pubic hair discourse and public figure teardowns. Oh, and ridiculing Cos and M&S alternately.

Stockpiling inventory usually depends on price. The thermal waters I have loads of because they cost next to nothing and they quite quickly but my retinol eye serum I'll only have one extra one of as it lasts for nearly a year and is pretty pricey.

Tantpoke · 29/08/2017 14:09

Olli the line looks nice and clean from the photo so its doing the trick

When one of best friends came to visit me at my old flat we decided to repaint the bathroom including the tiles using normal emulsion paint Grin we were a bit tipsy, my BF came home and couldn't stop laughing whilst telling us what idiots we were Grin We were young at the time early 20's so urm old enough to know better but young enough not to give a crap.

Ollivander84 · 29/08/2017 14:11

It's getting there! The line isn't perfect which is annoying me BlushGrin but it always looks better once the wall is all done
Got more cutting in to do and will roller another wall tonight. Doing about 2hrs a day on it after work

Tantpoke · 29/08/2017 14:11

by BF I mean DP

BagelGoesWalking · 29/08/2017 14:11

Botemp what exactly is the aim of the Resveratrol and Ferulic Acid serum and the EUK? I know they are antioxidants and good for you and the health of the skin etc. Are there other benefits?

Do they have to be used in conjunction with Vit C or can they be used without Vit C?

I use the 20% ATSF - I presume could they also be used with that?

botemp · 29/08/2017 14:13

Ah you're doing my head in Tant. I tend to go with 'as little or as many as you need' which isn't much of an answer. I'm definitely of the 'less is more mentality' and would advise to avoid similar products within a full routine (so that's a routine over the course of days with the full product lineup).

So the retinol and NIOD copper amino isolate do 'similar' things, or rather, work towards the same results. Vitamin A being the research backed horse. So I would use one or the other.

NIOD MMHC is similar to the Buffet, so again one or the other and use it in the AM if you're prone to dehydration or it develops throughout the day.

Lactic Acid/Niacinamide from TO/Azelaic all work to do similar things again (through very different methods) so find the one that works best for you and stick with that.

Tantpoke · 29/08/2017 14:18

Bo thank you, great advice and sorry for doing your head in Blush you're ace Grin

botemp · 29/08/2017 14:29

Bagel, antioxidants are a bit of a controversial item since some claim you're not getting any of the benefits anyhow since it just oxidises instantly and most of the cited research has to do more with ingesting antioxidants (great, eat lots of fruit and veg) and topical application of usually raw fresh ingredients.

There is a lot of established research though for the coupling of Vitamin C in L-AA form with Vit E and Ferulic because it amplifies the effect of the Vit C by something like 20x.

Resveratrol has some research behind it too (drink lots of red wine), mostly wrt improving elasticity and firmness. It's pretty much Caudalie's USP ingredient and you often see it in the 'mature' category.

I don't think you can use it with the 20% ATSF and expect the same boosted results as it specifically only mentions the two L-AA formulations, may be down to the L-AA component but possibly the presence of oil may inhibit the absorption? You can certainly use it on its own for the antioxidant value - so protection from environmental stress, boosting SPF efficacy, etc. just not at the levels of Vit C + R&F.

I haven't really looked into the EUK yet, because it sounds like the EU and UK's unwanted lovechild as my tolerance for TO's brand of science washing had reached its toll for today.

OP posts:
BagelGoesWalking · 29/08/2017 15:05

Thank you so much, Botemp, by far the best explanation I've read so far. And you're right about EUK Grin a somewhat unfortunate name!

miffy2 · 29/08/2017 17:48

botemp based on what you said about coupling Vitamin C with Vit E & Ferulic acid, have you an opinion on the serum from Timeless? I used it before and like it although I found the consistency a bit runny. I might go for it again after I finish up the Face Theory one I am currently using.

userallusedup · 29/08/2017 18:23

I'm such a sucker for TO Blush just ordered the ferulic stuff and the new ret high strength in squalane. Mind you both are on pre-order so if the wait list for TO foundation is anything to go by they'll turn up round Christmas time.

Love that colour Olli and very impressive progress. I always have to pay someone else to paint as I'm absolutely rubbish at it.

I like having a nosey on the other parts of Mumsnet when something intriguing sounding pops up in 'trending', I'm not sure I'd have the nerve to post anywhere other than here though - apart from anything else I don't understand half the acronyms Confused so I'd probably just make a fool of myself.

Ollivander84 · 29/08/2017 18:58

Done painting for the day. It is my first go but it's taking me ages!

botemp · 29/08/2017 19:33

I haven't tried the Timeless one miffy but I know Hotandflashy rates it highly (also has a code underneath her videos for a decent discount). I think it is one that oxidises quickly and needs to be kept in the fridge, but that and the Nufountain C + Ferulic make for good dupes of the SkinCeuticals original. I'd prefer the Nufountain (never tried it though) because that is made to order and especially with the whole shipping over and possible delays in customs would give me more peace of mind. Also, Vit E isn't that great for oily skin (and to a lesser extent combo) so that makes the Nufountain more universally applicable too.

Did you order from VH or Deciem themselves? Mine didn't say pre-order so I assumed it's all in stock she says hopefully.

user, for the longest time I was utterly confused why people spoke about their boyfriends so oddly on here, it never made sense to me why people wanted really practical cotton v necked pajamas for their boyfriend... so yeah, BF on MN usually mean breastfeeding Blush

Painting always feels like it takes forever, Olli, I don't know what it is. Possibly since it's quite monotonous it feels like time stretches to forever, maybe put on a nice podcast or similar to stimulate the brain cells a bit whilst working? Think Sali Hughes did another Soho radio session a week or two ago.
