Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. In order to make use of the below form and join in I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

NEW ADDITIONS since last thread:

Do I Really Need to Wear Sunscreen Every Single Day of the Year?

Understanding Which Sunscreen(s) to Buy

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

If you pose a question and we need more contextual information to answer properly we may ask you to fill in the following form. Please only use this form when asked, unsolicited forms will be deleted. Responses to the form can be found here

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

AUGUST 2017: Sunscreen is pretty much non-negotiable at the moment (not that it’s ever not Wink), RL bumps have been met in the road for some, unfortunately. Grief sucks but we do our best to offer a bit of comfort even if it is just something as inane as skincare chat Smile. Some of us are lucky enough to be nerding out in French pharmacies whilst pretending to do that holiday thing, the Shelf Porn Off is still on…

I can't believe we're on thread 9 Shock

4 days to go till my holiday and I realised I needed something to cover up on the beach that wasn't the same navy blue M&S longish beach shirt I always wear. I'll still be taking it but I found some lovely 'wafty' beachy Kaftan items at TK Maxx that are longer and cover up a bit more. Plus I also treated myself to a lovely long floaty dress.

They look better on than in a photo but I'll try and post a photo if you want and you can tell me what you think.

Tantpoke · 08/08/2017 20:30

The kaftans look better on I promise, it's just beach wear / sitting for lunch wear.

mint its called skin revive nourishing cream concentrate

EnidButton · 08/08/2017 21:06

Compared ingredients for the Pantene Clarifying shampoo and the new Micellar cleanse and nourish and they are very nearly identical apart from two things.

The Micellar has sodium hydroxide just before the peg-60 almond...and the Clarifying one has limonene in it. But definitely looking hopeful. Thanks for posting the pics JD Brew

EnidButton · 08/08/2017 21:07

They look really nice Tant 👍🏻 Where are you off to? (Sorry if you've already said.)

EnidButton · 08/08/2017 21:14

Ah the new Micellar one is missing linalool too.

EnidButton · 08/08/2017 21:19

Ok so linalool and limonene are just there for scent right?

Skinfulnappies46 · 08/08/2017 22:18

Thanks bo re the Vit C serum? It says to use at night.. i thought you used it in the morning?

I have also been using that Avene cleanser and love it. It us very gentle but thorough and a little goes a long way. A definite repurchase . Have also been loving the Avene antiageing SPF 50 and just started the their Skin Recovery Cream. Good results so far . Boots had an offer on....

EnidButton · 08/08/2017 22:27

The skin recovery cream looks good. Let us know how you get on with it.

EnidButton · 08/08/2017 22:27

Please and thank you. Smile

Tantpoke · 08/08/2017 22:33

enid off to Ibiza but in a family resort.
Not sure if they're a bit Ott or what tbh but I looked everywhere and TK Maxx was the only place with anything wafty and beachy left. I can also wear my trusty sarong, just fancied a bit of a change.

I'm going to try out the Pantene micellar shampoo tomorrow morning, I'm quite excited after you saying you didn't have to wash your hair for 2-3 days, that will be a miracle if it's the same for me, here's hoping.

JDSTER · 08/08/2017 22:34

enid glad the pictures helped and softened the blow a bit Grin. Linalool a fragrance I think as is limonene but I think that also strips oil, so possibly part of the clarifying element.
tant kaftan and dress look ideal for holidays. 5 days until my hols Smile.
skinful a few vit c preparations suggest using at night. The ordinary new 30% one suggests at night yet given the texture I would say it's more suited to morning use and 23% formulation better at night. There's one CH was recommending which is a nighttime one. I'm not entirely sure what the rationale is mind you.

JDSTER · 08/08/2017 22:40

tant also meant to say I probably won't bother with moisturiser in the morning on holiday. Vitamin C after cleansing, then I'll use LRP anthelios spf I bought which is too heavy for me here day to day in U.K. but I know it'll provide good protection on holiday.

EnidButton · 08/08/2017 22:49

Tant They look perfect. Not ott at all. It was the old discontinued Clarifying shampoo that let me go 2-3 days in between. This Micellar one is new and I haven't tried it yet, but it does look promising. The lack of limonene in it might be an issue but it was fairly low down on the ingredients list so could be fine. I'll update once I've used it. Let me know what you think.

EnidButton · 08/08/2017 22:50

Thanks JD Smile

Pupsiecola · 08/08/2017 23:06

Thanks for the new thread Bo, and please don't worry; I can't remember any previous thread titles of suggested!!

Yes, am very happy to be living 2 miles from the "Project Manager" rather than 2 doors down. Can you believe our kitchen extension started on 4th September. These threads must therefore be almost a year old!

Pupsiecola · 08/08/2017 23:09

I just checked. It was mid October so not quite a year.

Tantpoke · 08/08/2017 23:41

I will be swimming a lot, so on reflection I don't want to waste my good products that are nearly running out, esp as my TO order is nowhere to be seen. I might actually use up my Neutrogena hydro boost cream and gel which I've hardly touched recently under my LRP Matte anti Helios spf.

enid Im relieved you don't think they're ott Smile

Tantpoke · 08/08/2017 23:43

Thanks JD glad you like them too. I will definitely wear the Vit c though as you advise under spf if I'm out and about and not swimming.

mintmagnummm · 09/08/2017 06:54

Thanks shop is it greasy? Have you tried any other products from there?

botemp · 09/08/2017 07:14

emma, as a starting point that's readily available in the UK I usually say to look at the LRP Anthelios Fluid XL. The anti ageing one from Avene that mint and a few others are enjoying may also be worth trying. Please note that the PC is a moisturiser and not a stand alone SPF so won't provide you with the same level of protection.

Ooh shoes, nice Olli. Since we're off on a tangent, can anyone tell me what H by Hudson shoes are like? Generally pay a bit more for shoes as they tend to otherwise be torture devices but these appear to be made in Portugal and good looking leather so am contemplating.

Tant, I'm well jealous, I look ridiculous in kaftans, unless it's completely transparent and then what's the point. You'll do great with them, I'm sure. You don't have to skip Vit C when swimming btw, it gets absorbed within 20 mins and then you could theoretically wash it off without issue and it does help boost the SPF protection which is helpful when swimming.

Yes that 30% Vit C from DCL specifically says to use at night due to texture. The logic is that Vit C works for 24 hrs but dimishes hourly, hence the high percentages should cover you but our body stops absorbing it after 20% so I'm a bit skeptical about it all especially the ones that are in suspension forms as it's been questioned how much of the L-AA is actually readily available. I think estimates were made that TO Vit C 23% would be the equivalent of a 10-15% water based Vit C serum.

A year in October Shock. Where has all the time gone, Pupsie! Well this can only mean one thing... class trip to Duane Reade Grin

Shop · 09/08/2017 07:42

I bought a set mint but haven't tried any of the other things yet. It's very rich but not greasy, takes a little while to soak in just the same as the Facetheory one but leaves my skin really moisturiser but not at all shiny.

yongnian · 09/08/2017 08:57

enid I might be remembering wrongly here, but aren't linalool and limonene derivative ingredients from essential oils...? In which case, if you track down which ones....you could add a couple of drops to your micellar ok bit bonkers but it's the kind of thing I'd do as a total nerd
I want to say that the linalool is from geranium oil but could be wrong...anyhow Google may be more helpful. And limonene from a citrus oil possibly....lemon presumably
Oh and I was paraphrasing on the other thread from something I wrote when I lost my first beloved pooch...i will send it to you if you like but perhaps not right now whilst you are still feeling so raw....be good to yourself....I had a couple of bad animal-grief moments lately - first anniversary of our second dog's PTS, then when I got back from hols and was reunited with the horses, as I was driving there it hit me really badly that my recently-lost quirky boy horse wouldn't be there with the others...Sad A lot of neck-sniffing of the others helped a bit.
bo I will look to see which hydrabio it is....sadly my skincare shopping was woefully compromised this trip, more along the lines of a supermarket sweep/trolley dash than my usual endless perusal...
tant your kaftans are great, will be fab for Ibiza...
olli nice boots, great reduction!
pupsie happy new house, glad you got away from PM...

ohgoonthenjustonemore · 09/08/2017 10:27

bo I've worn Hudson shoes and sandals (the Sherbert is my no1 favourite) for a few years now and absolutely love them ! The quality is great ! I have only ever had one problem when the heel on a shoe started crumbling and after emailing their customer service department some photographic evidence they sent out a replacement pair that same day !! Grin

Ollivander84 · 09/08/2017 10:30

I bought boots as I've lost 22lbs and still losing so can't buy clothes yet! Grin
