Anyone else think that on holiday women always look better in bikinis?

I've seen so many posts on here from women anxious about what they will look like on holiday or if they're too fat/old etc to wear a bikini.

On holiday just now and it struck me round the pool that it doesn't matter how different everyone's bodies are bikinis are always much more flattering than a one piece.

There's women with huge post children tummies (me) women who are flat chested or have scars or stretch marks and no-one bats an eyelid.

Obviously if people choose to wear one pieces that's their choice but apart from one lady who's totally rocking a 50's style skirted suit complete with red lippy the other few in one pieces seem to be trying to go unnoticed but having the total opposite effect especially the ones sitting in the pool with sarongs and bits of fabric wrapped round them.

Hope I don't offend anyone with this post as obviously it's everyone's personal choice but just wondered if anyone's ever actually looked at someone in a bikini and thought "bloody hell they shouldn't have that on"

Yes my mum. She points out people and comments on them all the time. Shes just come back from Cyprus and regaled me with tales of " massive women in bikinis that nearly made her lose her lunch ". Not surprisingly ive never worn a bikini in my life Sad

RogerLimasOldestDreadlock · 08/07/2017 20:16

It's a long time since I went on a beach holiday, but I agree, all shapes and sizes look great in bikinis!

And yes, sometimes wearing a tankini or one piece or other efforts to cover up do have the opposite effect of drawing attention or being entirely unflattering.

I'm a big fan of humans being human shaped and enjoying their human bodies!

Having said that, I'm also hugely in favour of people wearing whatever makes them comfortable, male or female. But being comfortable for the weather/situation should take priority over concern for other people's (perceived) opinion.

Allyg1185 · 08/07/2017 20:22

I wear tankinis cause I don't have the confidence to wear a bikini after having my son

lonelysaddo · 08/07/2017 20:23

Aww that's terrible peaky! Wonder what she's make of my belly.

Though I walked past a crowd of teenage boys earlier on the way to the bar and none of them sniggered or said anything rude. Maybe I'm just in a very polite place.

My one piece looks fine, I thought till now, anyway.

allegretto · 08/07/2017 20:24

Yes. I'm on holiday now. Busy beach and almost nobody is in a one piece or tankini (do they even exist outside the UK?!) All different sizes and body shapes.

OuchBollocks · 08/07/2017 20:25

There's no way in hell I'm wearing a bikini

reallyanotherone · 08/07/2017 20:28

I always wear a one piece.

Many reasons, more coverage from the sun (i burn incredibly easily), more secure, as i like to swim proper lengths and dive/jump in. I am hourglass shape and it's hard to find a well fitting bikini. Also i just like the look.

buggerthebotox · 08/07/2017 20:31

I disagree with youOP. I've always thought EVERYONE looks better in a one-piece, regardless of shape. I think they're somehow more......elegant?

Quodlibet · 08/07/2017 20:32

In Brazil everybody of all body shapes wears a tiny tiny little bikini. It's actually way more flattering in my opinion than large swimsuits (which just serve the purpose of accenting how much of your body you want to hide) and swathes of fabric.

Each to their own and whatever makes you feel confident etc, but I think in purely objective terms, bikinis make most bodies look less noticeably out of shape than large swimsuits.

BillywigSting · 08/07/2017 20:34

A well fitting bikini in a flattering-for-the-wearers-body will always look better than a poorly fitting one piece.

On the other hand, a well cut and flattering one piece will always look better than an ill fitting bikini.

Of course this is purely just my humble opinion.

allegretto · 08/07/2017 20:36

Billywig - I agree but I don't think tankinis look good on anyone unless they are super skinny - in which case you may as well just wear a bikini.Grin

Polkadot1974 · 08/07/2017 20:42

I kind of agree but wear tankinis because I fear the flesh on display. That said I've not been on a sunshine holiday in years needing skin to be out. Center parcs is the nearest I get to swimwear!

Onhold · 08/07/2017 20:43

I think you should wear what the bloody hell you like.

roamingespadrille · 08/07/2017 20:47

I've never worn a bikini and am perfectly content with my size 10 body. I just don't want to show it to everyone.

I don't care if anyone else does though.

Why do people have to judge like this? Women 'should' wear a bikini, women 'shouldn't' wear a bikini. It's pathetic.

Shockers · 08/07/2017 20:48

^^
This!

SheepyFun · 08/07/2017 20:48

I have such exciting scarring (the c-section is the least of it) that children either shy away in horror, or embarrass their parents by asking me about it (not always in a language I understand). And that was when I was slim, so my abdomen was basically flat. I weigh a bit more now, so my abdomen has lumps and bumps in all sorts of unusual places. I'm not ashamed of my body (I've carried most of the scarring since babyhood, so it's always been part of me), but I'm don't always want the attention a bikini would bring....

Shockers · 08/07/2017 20:48

That was meant for Onhold, but I also agree with roaming!

FaFoutis · 08/07/2017 20:52

Life is experienced from the inside (at least a good life is) so who gives a shit what people wear as long as they are comfortable.

FatGirlWithChocolate · 08/07/2017 20:55

I could never wear a bikini..and I probably don't look great in a one piece, but I do think it's liberating when you are abroad and see that people just don't care. They wear what they want, and they live. We could learn a lot from them.

allegretto · 08/07/2017 20:56

It's pathetic It's not judgemental to give an opinion. This is the style board. If the answer to every post was "just wear what you like" it would be pretty boring!

Ecureuil · 08/07/2017 20:58

I don't care if anyone thinks I'd look better in a bikini. I'm perfectly happy in a one piece. Size 10, a couple of stretch marks but nothing major, no body hang ups. Just prefer a one piece.
Where what the hell you want.

TheUpsideDown · 08/07/2017 20:58

I think it all depends on each body shape personally. I prefer a tankini because I can't bear my podgy belly and like it covered. But I seriously struggle to find a one piece that fits my pear shape (small upper body & breasts but a curvy round bottom & muscly thighs).

I've just been on holiday to France and saw women of all sizes in all kinds of different swimwear and I thought the majority did well in choosing what was flattering for their own shape

Graceflorrick · 08/07/2017 20:58

I exclusively wear Bikinis, my tummy is my best bit and the top of my legs the worst. A swimsuit wouldn't work for me.

ememem84 · 08/07/2017 20:59

I'm usually a bikini girl. I'm usually 5'9 and around 10 stone. and have gigantor norks

I've recently started wearing tankinis and a one piece as am pregnant and just don't feel comfortable with my bump out.
I was suprised at how flattering the one piece was. Having not worn one other than a sporty one for actual swimming for years.

Mines a 50's style black and white spot one. With shorts bottoms. It's super cute. And doesn't make me feel like I look like a massive whale.

One pieces are cool
