Anyone else think that on holiday women always look better in bikinis?

lonelysaddo · 08/07/2017 20:04

I've seen so many posts on here from women anxious about what they will look like on holiday or if they're too fat/old etc to wear a bikini.

On holiday just now and it struck me round the pool that it doesn't matter how different everyone's bodies are bikinis are always much more flattering than a one piece.

There's women with huge post children tummies (me) women who are flat chested or have scars or stretch marks and no-one bats an eyelid.

Obviously if people choose to wear one pieces that's their choice but apart from one lady who's totally rocking a 50's style skirted suit complete with red lippy the other few in one pieces seem to be trying to go unnoticed but having the total opposite effect especially the ones sitting in the pool with sarongs and bits of fabric wrapped round them.

Hope I don't offend anyone with this post as obviously it's everyone's personal choice but just wondered if anyone's ever actually looked at someone in a bikini and thought "bloody hell they shouldn't have that on"

No the OP is saying bikinis are more flattering which isn't true for everyone . What I'm saying is wear what you like. This conversation comes up every year on Mumsnet. I don't feel as if I stand out by wearing a one piece but even if I did I couldn't care less.

RebelRogue · 09/07/2017 12:37

Meh last year women were wearing bikinis, tankinis, one piece, burkinis, cover ups, shorts and every other variation of this. The nice thing to look at was everyone having fun, relaxing etc

And no a bikini is not flattering on me.

hiccupgirl · 09/07/2017 12:40

I'm off on my first ever hot holiday in 2 weeks and I have tankinis for round the pool. Firstly because my tummy has never been out in tropical sun and I don't want to have to be using tons of sun cream as it is very, very white and I have a very visible scar across my middle that I'm not ready to get out for the world to see.

Bikinis are great if you feel confident to wear one but so are one pieces and tankinis if you don't want to get your tummy out for whatever reason.

NomDePlumeReloaded · 09/07/2017 12:44

I also disagree. I think swimsuits generally are more chic and flattering. However, in reality, I couldn't give a tinker's toot what other people wear around the pool/on the beach.

Bluntness100 · 09/07/2017 12:55

I've never really given it any thought. I have to say though, I've been on two hols this year, Caribbean and Africa. and both times women in a one piece or tankini were very rare. When you did see one it tended to be older ladies, women over fifty or sixty, so I'm surprised by the responses on here.

You see all shapes and sizes on a beach. I really think people should just wear what they feel comfy in. And if being more covered up makes you feel more comfortable, then that's what to wear.

buggerthebotox · 09/07/2017 13:02

Love this one! If it's good enough for a Baywatch Babe, it's good enough for meGrin.

Summerswallow · 09/07/2017 13:33

I holiday where everyone wears bikinis, I still wear a one piece and something floaty on the top, not just for modesty reasons, but to keep the sun away. I think you have to just go with what makes you feel comfortable and not worry too much what fits in. It is true that in the Med even the very large middle aged and older ladies pretty much all wear bikinis, my MIL doesn't though.

specialsubject · 09/07/2017 14:49

Bikini top and boardies is the most practical - quick dry not soggy knickers and no total strip needed for the toilet.

Sticky red lips at the pool - well, each to their own.

No one looks brilliant in bra and knickers but it doesn't matter.

EBearhug · 09/07/2017 14:57

I usually wear a proper swimming costume so I can go swimming. I don't spend mich time sunbathing, and if I do, I tend to just remove my top entirely if I'm on my front, and pull my cossie up if I'm on my back. Don't care what people think of me.

dimots · 09/07/2017 14:57

I don't think men bother about such issues. Even very old or fat men take their tops off at the pool. Some of them even wear Speedos.

Ellapaella · 09/07/2017 18:03

I think you should wear what you want. I've been a slim size 10 my whole life but have never worn a bikini because I feel too self conscious. I am envious of anyone no matter what shape or size who feels confident enough to wear one - fair play to them. If you exude inner confidence you will look good in almost anything, and if you don't then you won't give a shit anyway because you think you do! Win win.

GhostCurry · 09/07/2017 18:24

I must be missing something about tankinis- don't they look basically the same as a one-piece?

LockedOutOfMN · 09/07/2017 18:27

GhostCurry The ones I've seen tend to have a gap between the bottom of the top and the top of the bottoms. But I'm not an expert. Maybe it depends on the wearer's height.

FrencheoGrammaireo · 10/07/2017 05:59

My preference (when I was a size 8-10) was board shorts and rashie with a bikini underneath. I HATE applying sun cream (SPF50) repeatedly, constantly checking my skin and burning anyway, but I enjoy snorkelling and swimming.

If you want to stick out on an Italian beach, that combo beats a 1-piece any day! Grin

Now I have a B shaped stomach that is lumpy from fat pushing through stretch marks and wrinkly like a raisin. Maybe if I had a partner who thought I was beautiful whatever it might make me feel better about myself (because looking in the mirror doesn't) but he doesn't think that and neither do I so I'm very happy in my patterned 1-pieces.

FrencheoGrammaireo · 10/07/2017 06:02

Oh and tankinis look the worst of all options on me. The pants with dig in (creating another lump) or fall off and the tops have to be very tight to not ride up in the water. At least in a 1-piece I'm not constantly adjusting. And the only tankini I wore was when I was thinner. Those results would be exacerbated now!!!

But that's just me. I'm very happy for anybody else to wear anything else - including burkinis.

KoalaDownUnder · 10/07/2017 06:13

I disagree - I think most people look much better in a one-piece.

Me too. I COMPLETELY disagree. If you have a flabby, stretch-marked stomach, how is it not going to look better covered?

I'm 5'9" and a size 10/12. I won't be wearing a bikini any time soon.

Similar, and me neither.

Floisme · 10/07/2017 09:15

I've worn a one-piece since I was 21 because I feel more elegant, more pulled together and more like me. Plus I always cover up on the beach as I hate that cooking in the sun feeling. I have no interest in getting a tan.

I'm all for women feeling happy in their own skin but I don't think telling them what they should or shouldn't wear is the way to do it.

burnishedsilver · 10/07/2017 09:19

I much prefer a one piece.

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 10/07/2017 09:33

I'm tall and slim with a flat stomach and no stretch marks. I prefer a one piece because they look more elegant and I like swimming or surfing and find sunbathing utterly tedious.
The beach is the great leveller in the sense that very few people actually look good... but it doesn't matter.

Florriesma · 10/07/2017 09:48

Tbh i think anyone who tans can look good in a bikini, those of us who burn despite factor 50 not so much.
most europeans dont burn so easily so yes they will feel comfortable in a bikini. The average lily white celt either runs the risk of third degree burns or paranoia about burning. Swimsuits and tankinis all the time for me.

Summer23 · 10/07/2017 10:13

On holiday just now and all shapes and sizes wearing bikinis. I brought a one piece and bikini but it's been a bit hot for a one piece.

Lonelynessie · 10/07/2017 10:46

I really think it depends on getting the right bikini or costume for your shape. This year I've bought myself loads of high legged swimsuits which really suit me (and cover my wobbly tum a bit), but my legs and bum are my best features.

When I've worn bikinis I don't feel I look as good as the tops either fit weird, or look too old fashioned (I've got massive boobs, but don't want to wear the bra style tops because I don't want to look like I'm wearing a bra on the beach), also I hate my stomach being out as it's not at all my best feature, and I find that bikini's highlight that area.

AWendyAteMyFitbit · 10/07/2017 10:55

Bikinis suit me more, so I wear them. Simples.

selfishcrab · 10/07/2017 11:01

I wear a bikini and I'm 50 and not fit!
What sealed it for me was a 80 year old lady in Mexico rocking her bikini, she had so much confidence.
Got me thinking who am I to judge.
My Mother is vile about other woman and about my body, when I took her away last year the words oh do fuck off with your judgemnet slipped from my lips!

Scrumpington · 10/07/2017 11:18

And thanks for making me feel a bit shit about my beautiful new one piece waiting to be worn.

God there are some proper drama queens on this thread.
