Anyone else think that on holiday women always look better in bikinis?

I've seen so many posts on here from women anxious about what they will look like on holiday or if they're too fat/old etc to wear a bikini.

On holiday just now and it struck me round the pool that it doesn't matter how different everyone's bodies are bikinis are always much more flattering than a one piece.

There's women with huge post children tummies (me) women who are flat chested or have scars or stretch marks and no-one bats an eyelid.

Obviously if people choose to wear one pieces that's their choice but apart from one lady who's totally rocking a 50's style skirted suit complete with red lippy the other few in one pieces seem to be trying to go unnoticed but having the total opposite effect especially the ones sitting in the pool with sarongs and bits of fabric wrapped round them.

Hope I don't offend anyone with this post as obviously it's everyone's personal choice but just wondered if anyone's ever actually looked at someone in a bikini and thought "bloody hell they shouldn't have that on"

In a word, no.

Frouby · 09/07/2017 08:36

I go away on a beach holiday in 4 weeks. Have just bought 4 tankinis. Well fitting bra sized ones to support my huge norks.

I sincerely hope I am not the only 1 wearing tankinis or a 1 piece.

Dd (13) has 2 1 piece costumes and wants 2 tankinis rather than bikinis. She has a beautiful figure and looks stunning in a 1 piece. Healthy and athletic.

I think women should wear whatever the fuck they want without anyone judging or commenting or people wondering what they are covering up.

longestlurkerever · 09/07/2017 08:42

I don't really like bikinis on me - too much potential for sunburn, stretch mark tummy and the potential to come off if you do too much vigorous swimming. I don't really wear a one piece to not be noticed though - I'm more of a practical gal.

wrinkleseverywhere · 09/07/2017 08:44

As a pear shape, I love bikinis as I can get the top & bottom in different sizes & not worry about getting a wedgie. However, as a pear shape with young DC, I just don't find them that practical for being on the beach where I'm playing football one minute, in the sea the next and the sandcastle building (all the while thinking longingly of the trashy novel I optimistically brought with me). For that, I prefer knowing it's one item which isn't going to fall down etc.
It also means there is slightly less of me to put suncream on & I get so bored putting suncream on, especially when doing the DC too.

LOVE that video! !!!!

Muchtoomuchtodo · 09/07/2017 08:53

OP I'm pleased you've said this.

I've bought 2 for my holiday this year. Not worn one since before having the kids (12 and 10).

Granted our holiday home is secluded and has its own pool but I hope I won't look too shocking!

TheDowagerCuntess · 09/07/2017 08:55

I disagree - I think most people look much better in a one-piece.

I'm 5'9" and a size 10/12. I won't be wearing a bikini any time soon.

CiderwithBuda · 09/07/2017 09:06

I'm a size 20/22 and wear one pieces although have just bought a tankini. My stomach is my biggest bit - def apple shape. And as it hasn't seen the sun since 1989 it's whiter than a white thing. No way will I be wearing a bikini.

I do notice other women on the beach or around undo the pool. Usually envious of those who are slim enough for a bikini and admire those who aren't but wear one anyway!

rollonthesummer · 09/07/2017 09:14

that it doesn't matter how different everyone's bodies are bikinis are always much more flattering than a one piece

No-I disagree! Some people don't look good in bikinis and I've seen people look pretty awful in a one-piece. It depends on your body shape and the item of clothing in question! Cheap unsupportive bikinis on people with massive boobs (I count myself in this!) can look shockingly bad!

Caprianna · 09/07/2017 09:22

I could not tell you what those around me on the beach are wearing. Why are you analysing?

slug · 09/07/2017 09:25

Wear what you want but you'll never get me in a bikini. It has nothing to do with my size or shape and everything to do with sun exposure risks. I always wear a hat and a cover up too.

LightastheBreeze · 09/07/2017 09:54

Sitting st the pool now in my tanklni and huge straw hat as I have to be careful with sunburn. I used to wear a bikini but cover up more now as I don't want to burn my middle or have to put tons of sun cream on it.

LightastheBreeze · 09/07/2017 09:57

I also wear sturdy short bottoms, my favourite tanking is my thickish Boden one with biggish short style bottoms

thenightsky · 09/07/2017 10:01

I never had the confidence to wear bikinis when I was young. Also, back in the day, cup size ones were not invented.

I bought my first bikini in my late 40s when Bravissimo opened a branch in my home town. I continue to wear them now (50+). Its much easier to find a decent fitting bikini these days than a short in the body/wrong cup size one-piece.

BeckywiththeGoodHare · 09/07/2017 10:23

I have a couple of tankinis because I've got a long body and 34DD norks - so it's hard to find a one piece where the wiring's in the right place to provide flattering nork wrangling without being pulled so high on the bottom half that it feels like I'm wearing a cheese wire.

BrieOnAnOatcake · 09/07/2017 11:06

I'm looking at plus size swim dresses / dressini!!!

But the other extreme but will make me feel comfortable and play with kids.

MozzchopsThirty · 09/07/2017 11:25

I really dislike tankinis, they are the leggings of beachwear in that people think they hide everything when all it does is accentuate the bits you're trying to disguise

I love seeing women of any size in bikinis whether you're a size 8 or 28

I'm a size 10 but with big boobs & saggy belly, good sized bikinis are getting easier to come by thanks to places like boux avenue

RebelRogue · 09/07/2017 11:25

I wear tankinis as that's what I'm well and truly comfortable in,lounging in the sun, swimming loads or mucking about with dd in the pool or just popping for a snack/ice cream. I don't give a shit if i stand out or if people think i should be wearing a bikini,it's what I'm comfortable in.

lonelysaddo · 09/07/2017 11:35

Oops knew I would still manage to offend some people 🙈 honestly though don't feel too shit about how a random on the internet with a totally imperfect body has made you feel about your new one piece.

The point I was (badly) trying to make is that after seeing so many posts from people anxious about wearing a bikini once you're actually away it doesn't seem to matter and most people look better in them anyway.

The few posts about how people have too much fun to notice or "judge" other people gave me a smile as well. I'm managing to have a brill holiday but still find time to people watch and mumsnet at well Grin

Like a previous poster I also need to buy my bikinis from bravissimo so I suppose if I hadn't found them and their impressive scaffolding it may be another story Confused

I was talking to a lady about this very topic when putting out my sunbeds this morning who said she hadn't brought a single bikini with her but now wishes she had so wouldn't hurt for people who still have holidays to go on to pack one just incase they do feel more confident once they are away.

BrieOnAnOatcake · 09/07/2017 11:43

I don't care if they're like leggings. I m dressing for me and to feel comfortable playing with my kids and at size 24 that's hard!

byebyeapplepie · 09/07/2017 11:44

YY to Rebel and others. Why is it all about looks?

I'm thinking of getting some board shorts so I can properly play on the beach with my kids this year.

dimots · 09/07/2017 11:52

Wear what you want, but I have to say I don't really like tankinis as the tops tend to ride up on me and expose just the least flattering bit of my middle - so look much worse than either a bikini or a one piece. I do like them for my daughter though, as they provide more sun protection than a bikini, but are easier to use the toilet when wearing.

byebyeapplepie · 09/07/2017 11:52

Brie i looked at swim dresses. There are some really pretty ones. I think they're a great idea for playing regardless of size.

ZaraW · 09/07/2017 11:55

I don't have any body issues I wear one pieces, tankinis and even a rash guard as I'm so pale and burn. I don't sunbathe but swim and snorkel etc. I really don't care what anyone else does on the beach or what they wear or even what size they are.

It's interesting a few people have come up to me (mostly Australians to tell me how sensible I am).

MozzchopsThirty · 09/07/2017 11:55

Of course you should wear what you want and feel comfortable in
My point was that some women feel they need to 'cover up' their bodies or feel embarrassed in front of those super toned mums by the pool

But as op says, no one cares, no one is judging, we should all wear what we want and what we feel comfortable in not what we feel we should wear due to weight or body insecurities
