Anyone else think that on holiday women always look better in bikinis?

lonelysaddo · 08/07/2017 20:04

I've seen so many posts on here from women anxious about what they will look like on holiday or if they're too fat/old etc to wear a bikini.

On holiday just now and it struck me round the pool that it doesn't matter how different everyone's bodies are bikinis are always much more flattering than a one piece.

There's women with huge post children tummies (me) women who are flat chested or have scars or stretch marks and no-one bats an eyelid.

Obviously if people choose to wear one pieces that's their choice but apart from one lady who's totally rocking a 50's style skirted suit complete with red lippy the other few in one pieces seem to be trying to go unnoticed but having the total opposite effect especially the ones sitting in the pool with sarongs and bits of fabric wrapped round them.

Hope I don't offend anyone with this post as obviously it's everyone's personal choice but just wondered if anyone's ever actually looked at someone in a bikini and thought "bloody hell they shouldn't have that on"

OP posts:

I'm too busy enjoying my holiday to be judging other women on what they should be wearing Hmm

I'm a size 8 and wear all in ones. As long as I'm happy I dont give a shit what anyone else thinks.

allegretto · 08/07/2017 21:01

When it's really hot a one piece feels too hot tbh.

ASqueakingInTheShrubbery · 08/07/2017 21:02

I think either looks good as long as it fits properly. Last time we went to the beach I looked like an oven-ready turkey squished into my old one-piece, despite being size 10/12 and in reasonable shape. Much bigger women looked much better than I did in one and two pieces, because they fitted.

explodingkittens · 08/07/2017 21:04

Ive come around to this way of thinking over the last couple of years, OP. I was always a one-piecer, but on holiday in Spain a few years ago I realised that I was, genuinely, the ONLY woman in a one-piece at the beach and I stood out far more than anyone else.

However I do also rather enjoy a water slide or two on holiday and I prefer to keep my tits under wraps...

So now I take both. Bikinis for swimming/sunbathing...and a one-piece for a long day flinging myself around the water park Grin

LockedOutOfMN · 08/07/2017 21:05

I live in Spain. EVERYONE female wears a bikini unless they're a child in which case they just wear bikini bottoms. The only people who wear one pieces are super fashionable teens / 20 somethings as they're far less convenient for going to the loo and changing in public. Bikinis are sold everywhere, in every size.

Yes, there is less obesity here and people, in general, seem to be a little healthier and slimmer (perhaps because we know that at least three months of the year WILL be spent in a bikini). However, the effects of ageing, childbearing and living life itself affect everyone, in every country, and most bodies aren't perfect. That said, I've honestly never heard any snide comments about anyone's appearance in a bikini, not even from children who in my experience are brutally honest and will also parrot back anything they've overheard.

A person enjoying a sunny day at the pool or the beach is attractive, full stop.

Wear what you want and enjoy.

roamingespadrille · 08/07/2017 21:06

Didn't notice this was 'S&B'. Judge away, as is the usual.

JessiCake · 08/07/2017 21:07

I look utterly shit in a one-piece. I have a very long body that all the fabtic draws attention to, basically no tits and massive shoulders.

But I persist in wearing the horrible things cos I have such a horrible tummy that I just can't wear a bikini.

Annoyingly I'm slim and my stomach is fairly flat (and, with the long body thing, perfectly pleasing to look at) BUT I have the most awful cherry haemangioma all over my tummy and several bobbly-looking medium-sized moles that just make me cringe every time I look at them. The thought of exposing them to the general public is just too awful to contemplate.

I see women of all shapes and sizes in bikinis all the time and they suit some and not others. I never see anyone with horrible-looking big red dots all over their skin though, that's just me :(

Hairq · 08/07/2017 21:39

I'd never even think to get a bikini. I never even wore them when I was a skinny, toned size 8. Now a 12-14. My skin is very pale and fake tan just goes orange or yellow on me (tried many brands) and my stomach looks really flabby and doughy - it always did even when well toned because of my white as snow skin. I would feel inlooked horrible in a bikini.

Treysanatomy · 08/07/2017 21:40

I think woman almost always look good in swimwear, whatever the style and whatever their size. Bikinis and swimsuits aren't always 'flattering', but they don't really need to be. I think they're both easy to wear and as long as they fit look good on pretty much everyone.

For a lot of women wearing swimwear is a bit of an ordeal. It's a bit like stepping out in your undies! And we're bombarded with images of flat stomachs, defined abs and pert breasts sold as the 'ideal'- it's no wonder we feel self conscious.

I wanted a one piece this year for holidays. My two and four year olds love to hang off me and climb all over me, a swimsuit feels more 'secure'.

I was spoiled for choice, there were loads of flattering suits in the high street stores. I got two from Next and feel pretty good in them.

LockedOutOfMN · 08/07/2017 21:42

Sorry about my link fails!

d270r0 · 08/07/2017 21:51

Personally I wouldn't feel comfortable showing off my horrible post babies tummy to the world, stretch marks, flabby skin and all. I feel much happier and KNOW I look much bettr in a 1 piece. You can get some very flattering and nice 1-pieces you know.

OlennasWimple · 08/07/2017 21:53

Where I am women in one pieces stand out because they are very very much in the minority

TrueLove83 · 08/07/2017 21:55

I have an awful belly though it's like a B shape belly but the first bit of the B is bigger than the lower bit so you don't see my belly button. I generally have to wear high rise trousers to hold the middle bit in and since having kids it's sagging as essentially that's my belly the b underneath is like a flap of fat!!

It's all yuck and I'm working hard to exercise and lose weight.

I also had acne scars on arms and back and stretch marks on my shoulders.

Generally I'm a mess

Ecureuil · 08/07/2017 21:55

But what's wrong with that? I prefer one pieces, I think I look better in them. No body hang ups, I have a decent size 10 figure. So I don't care if I stand out!

BrieOnAnOatcake · 08/07/2017 21:58

I'm size 22 and would no way wear a bikini! But then I didn't when I was a more normal size 12 either prefering rash vests etc!

OlennasWimple · 08/07/2017 21:58

Try Smile

They are Americans, but I think we can be certain that they would feel at home on MN

kellogssquareofkrispierice · 08/07/2017 21:59

I look horrifying Ina swimming costume but so much better in a bikini so do agree with this!

OlennasWimple · 08/07/2017 22:03

Ecureil - nothing's wrong with standing out if you want to!

But if you are a bit more self-conscious, and would rather just blend into the background, wearing something very different to everyone else is a sure fire way to do that.

It's like wearing a lovely flattering cocktail dress to a gig where everyone else is in jeans and t-shirt. You still look great, and there's nothing wrong per se with dressing differently, but people are so much more likely to notice you if you are wearing something different from everyone else

MyFavouriteName · 08/07/2017 22:09

I was at the beach the other day and I actually thought to myself 'isn't it nice that women are wearing all sorts and it doesn't matter'. I saw women looking good in either bikinis, tankinis or one pieces.

And thanks for making me feel a bit shit about my beautiful new one piece waiting to be worn. I don't really understand why you think a one piece means a woman is covering something up. Maybe she just likes one pieces.

bumblingbovine49 · 08/07/2017 22:14

No way on earth am I wearing a bikini. Definitely without a shadow of a doubt I look (and much much more importantly feel) better in a one piece.

As to standing out, I honestly rarely see anyone as big as me on a beach (size 22 to 24) with size 42G breasts that hang around my waist without proper support. My tummy was never too bad (comparatively anyway))but after DS it is added to the growing numbetr of parts of my body that are never exposed in publiv. I wear a 50s style dress type costume (think waisted short dress) which holds me in. Underneath the fat I have an hourglass figure so it works for me.

As to standing out, I will do that whatever I wear so I choose what I think looks better on me and what I feel comfortable in.

As for tan marks, I don't even own a sleeveless summer top (stopped wearing them in public when I got 40 and am 52 now so no-one will ever see the lines.

ExConstance · 08/07/2017 22:26

I'm quite happy to expose my imperfections on a nudist beach but if I'm wearing swimwear there is no way I'd expose my tum to the masses, my one pieces are expensive and well fitting and I look good and feel confident in them.

byebyeapplepie · 09/07/2017 07:56

Olennas
I love that video! I'm in danger of losing my morning watching more.

dudsville · 09/07/2017 08:07

The reason I don't wear a bikini is because of comfort. I only ever go on holidays where there's a private villa and pool so for me it's not about what I look like to others just about what I'm comfortable in. Mine is a50's-esque thing with full bottom coverage and a sweetheart neckline and I feel so comfortable in it and I never have to adjust it out dig it out of nooks and crannies. I'm an hourglass 12/14.

NeitherKilnerNorMason · 09/07/2017 08:15

I look rubbish in both because I have thick thighs and saddle bags; no way of hiding those...
