Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. If you wish join us on this thread I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

If you pose a question and we need more contextual information to answer properly we may ask you to fill in the following form. Please only use this form when asked, unsolicited forms will be deleted. Responses to the form can be found here

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

MAY/JUNE 2017: It’s summer and some of us are hourglasses (and otherwise beautifully shaped) that desperately need to bitch and moan about the severe lack of clothes available to us. Also, some of us are recovering from a ‘fine’ butchering to our hair. Don’t ask. Some of us suffer from all of the above. At least the weather is good, wear sunscreen.

Just popping in to say hello. Been waiting until I have 5 minutes clear head to post about my make up and skincare memories. Brilliant question.

Need to catch up first. Hope you're all ok. Brew

mintmagnummm · 22/07/2017 12:35

@Tsmummy08 what do you have instead of sandwiches, pasta etc? Do you buy gluten free cakes etc?

HarryBiscuit · 22/07/2017 13:44

Thanks again botemp will try with a small area and see how it works.

Ollivander84 · 22/07/2017 14:24

To be fair I don't actually eat pasta or rice or potatoes Blush but I do eat the odd wrap!

mintmagnummm · 22/07/2017 16:30

What do u eat instead of these then olli

Ollivander84 · 22/07/2017 16:42

Breakfast is usually yoghurt and berries or eggs and tomatoes and bacon
Lunch is a wrap or a big salad
Tea is meat + veg usually. Maybe chicken with roasted kale, sweet corn, carrots etc

mintmagnummm · 22/07/2017 17:16

What kinds of things do you have in a wrap? And when u say big salad what things do u put in it?

Ollivander84 · 22/07/2017 17:27

Wrap I usually have sliced meats, grated cheese or cottage cheese, pickle and loads of salad leaves, sometimes cucumber and tomato
Salad - this week was a tin of tuna, a blob of mayo, lots of lemon juice, salad leaves, cucumber, spring onion, tomato, sweetcorn
A bag of salad leaves is my standard portion!

Deathraystare · 22/07/2017 19:30

Well if we are on make up memories I can remember a fantastic eye shadow palette I got from my Aunt - would have been 70's as I was at school. Yardley Soul setters - about 6 eyeshadows from pinks and bluey mauves to greens . All gorgeous colours. I loved their lipsticks too. I remember the same Aunt got me a peach colour Rimmel face powder with a Boots lipstick which was a bluey pink so not a good combo!!

I used to love Miners make up. I had their shockers eye palette - an acid yellow and green and bright pink and blue, also a pink panther lip gloss and does anyone remember when they had a line of honey flavoured lipsticks and glosses. I was remembering them the other day!

Oh and Outdoor girl. I had a lovely honey coloured gel foundation which went on beautifully. I really miss it. Gave a lovely tint.

Anyone remember the Max Factor comb on mascara that really had a stong smell!

yongnian · 22/07/2017 19:51

bo your grandmother's collection sounds wonderful. Ha yes, I am sorting my make up for travel tomorrow, will root out my Chanel palette and post a pic if I can...
tsmummy that is hilarious- I can imagine your poor mother's face Grin oh god dewberry, I like that til I met someone who lathered that on, bloody nauseating!
mint when I'm low-carving proper, I really notice the proper carb-like boost you get from green veg - with starchy carbs and sugars, the effect is almost as much as a boost as you get from eating bread. I buy that big long pale lettuce leaf (might be romaine but v tired so can't think offhand) and so, instead of tortillas for fajitas, I put the chicken stuff in one of those leaves (they're big and sturdy).
deathray OMG I had that Miners shockers palette!! Had totally forgotten about it, and about Miners range itself. I remember that Boots bluey-pink lipstick too.....Grin

yongnian · 22/07/2017 19:52

Oh bo sorry, yes it's the cologne from couvent des minimes

Tsmummy08 · 22/07/2017 20:10

Mint I don't often have GF bread/pasta as I limit carbs - definitely not very low carb but eating fewer carby foods suits me. Breakfast is usually a small portion of GF granola/cereal, full fat yoghurt and full fat milk, lunch is soup or salad and dinner will be protein, veg and maybe a small portion of rice/potatoes...

I don't buy GF cakes but I do make sure I've got some biscuits in the house to satisfy the occasional craving :)

mintmagnummm · 23/07/2017 09:06

Thanks everyone. Tsmummy I love the Nairns choc chip biscuits!
Which brand of granola do u have?
I struggle with salad as never know wat to put in it and wat dressing to make it more tasty!
Do u have any soup recs?

botemp · 23/07/2017 09:59

mint, when people go low carb or minimise it for weight loss/muscle increase, etc. they usually jig around the macros. So they'll eat substantially more protein and sometimes (healthy) fats in replacement of carbs rather than seeking out a different version of carbs to feel satiated. So where their diet may have been 60% Carb, 20% Protein, 20% Fat they may go 30% Carb, 40% Protein, 30% Fat (this just an example, it depends very much on your goals, genetics, and how much exercise you perform). My diet is similar to Olli's, except I rely more on seafood and plant based foods, not as much on dairy for fat and protein intake. I wouldn't consider myself a low-carber (my body really doesn't tolerate it well at all) but someone looking at my diet with not too much nutritional knowledge could easily mistake it as such but it's all in whole grains, pulses, fruit, and veg.

Since you mentioned pain, it sounds like you're doing the Fodmap as a sort of elimination diet? So your needs will, therefore, be different to a weight loss plan. The issue I have with a lot of 'free from', low fat, and GF foods is that they have a lot of sugars (Protein shakes and bars are another massive culprit of this) in them to make things palatable. So replacing relatively inane carbs with foods high in sugar isn't much of an improvement long term IMO.

For soups and salad inspiration just have a browse on the Ottolenghi column on The Guardian, tonnes of inspiration. Some of the items are more difficult to source but they often work with replacements too. Also, cauliflower rice, it's one of the rare easier to replace carbs without industry meddling. Just buy them whole when they're on offer, blitz in the food processor and store in the freezer. I make a turmeric version that's quite good and a lot quicker to make than actual rice. Cauliflower pizza, however, I've never managed to warm up to. Will look up the recipe later.

SUNDAY SUPPLEMENT

This will be probably be the last one for a bit, am on holiday from thursday onwards and am not sure how easily I’d be keeping up whilst travelling. Some links are probably duplicates or were already posted in reference to a question.

It’s SUMMER, hence the Sunscreen files:

It’s SUMMER, hence Acne is a bitch:

It’s SUMMER this has nothing to do with summer, and Dr. Sam is soooooo a Mumsnet lurker, and is now subliminally communicating with us, I’m sure of it, you just need to play it backwards :

Thanks for all that info bo. Yes mine isn't for weight loss although I do want to lessen my carbs for my tummy as that's a problem area for me which is I think linked to my ibs as I can sometimes look so bloated I look preg!
I do have an excercise app on my phone which I try to do daily (different ones) but they are very low intensity as I suffer from fibromyalgia so can't do anything too intense, I just want to tone up a little. I'm just rubbish at things like this and knowing what my body needs I find it very overwhelming.

mintmagnummm · 23/07/2017 11:45

Oh and I'm not sure the fodmap works for me anyway as I've still had pain while following it

Loveagoodbook · 23/07/2017 14:12

Hi ive read these posts lots and seen the advice you all give to each other. Im feeling really rubbish about my skin at the moment, its really getting me down. Ive had a bad year with My Mum and Nan passing away within a few months, spent the last few months of mums life not looking after my skin properly, so dont know if this has contributed to how it is now. Also i had the mirena coil fitted a year ago and i dont think that has helped. Anyway sorry for the ramble! Does my skin look like it can be rescued? I double cleanse at night using an oil based cleanser first then a vitamin E hot cloth, i then exfloliate with a vitamin E scrub. I then use a mositurising serum, them moisturiser.
This is a pic of my skin, any help greatly appreciated.

Fantastic Skincare: Skin (almost) sorted- decent fucking summer fucking clothes would be fucking nice. Don't ask us about our hair 🐌
BagelGoesWalking · 24/07/2017 17:37

Blimey, Botemp, that's quite a summer reading list.

Pupsiecola · 25/07/2017 10:53

That Japanese sunscreen comparison chart was very informative! I can't believe my Senka isn't even good for outdoors!!!!

Going to look at the Shigaisen. Ticks all the boxes. Literally.

EnidButton · 25/07/2017 19:24

Lots and lots to catch up on! Shock

I did a shop on Feel Unique today and got their beauty bag gift free with it. Rebought Kiehl's eyecream, EH balm (I know I know. This is the last time.) PK Elasticizer and Redken all soft conditioner. Turns out I like it and it's just the all soft hair mask that I didn't get on with.

Also ordered a small pot/bottle of Lush Big shampoo as a few posters on another thread said it's good for a deep clean. Haven't found a true replacement for the Pantene one yet. Put a small bottle of American Cream conditioner in too, based purely on reviewers saying their hair smelt of strawberries for days afterwards.

Still no haircut. Still desperate for one. Feel a bit scruffy although it looks fine. Bit anxious generally about things so that effects how I feel about appearance. Wish I wasn't like this it's exhausting by itself.

Love Very sorry about your terrible loss. That's so much to cope with. I can't advise at the mo but I do think your skin looks either dry or dehydrated. Could be both. Hard to tell off the pic. How does it feel throughout the day?

mintmagnummm · 25/07/2017 19:29

I've broken out in few spots and skin feels dehydrated and a little bit tingly when I apply my usual products arrrrrrgh must be that time of month again ffs

yongnian · 25/07/2017 19:35

Urggghhhh bo the beauté test list....I've just arrived in France and as of my list wasn't long enough already!
Am off to a flying start with:
More bioderma photoderm (big bottle better value) bioderma hydrabio, avene thermal water handbag size spray...cotton wool pads...eyes on stalks on my first foray.....

botemp · 26/07/2017 10:04

Sorry, everyone, I have been lost to packing & prep distractions.

Welcome, Love, sorry to hear about your tough times. I'm having a bit of a déjà vu moment though, you are new on the thread, right? We had someone with a v. similar emotional backstory and nearly identical looking skin pictures on here at the end of the last thread and I don't want to be mixing you up and suggesting you use things you've already tried. Can you elaborate a bit what's going on with your skin? And please ditch the Vit E scrub, you're over-cleansing with three steps anyhow but physically exfoliating irritated/aggravated/sensitised skin is probably the worst approach, though a very understandable impulse but it's not helping you at all long term.

IBS is tough mint, my friend has Crohn's disease and has a very limited diet because of it. It's very different to mine (very high in calories as she struggles to get it absorbed, no complex carbs - only a few select refined ones, fruit & veg only if cooked to death, avoiding certain fruit & veg altogether which are more difficult to digest like cabbage, no pulses, no dairy, no sugar and definitely no sugar substitutes either as they only make it worse) and it took a lot of effort to understand what she could and couldn't eat with the help of professionals.

Grin Yong, I did warn you... that list is stupidly compelling. Despite knowing that neck and decolletage creams are bollocks I'm somehow deeply intrigued by the number one that only costs ten euros and has lauding reviews and I don't even have any sign of crepe or damage there either Confused

OP posts:
RubyGoat · 26/07/2017 12:26

What do people think of the Nuxe body oil (not the shimmering one) & the body lotion? Has anyone used them? It seems to be highly rated online... but I'm always suspicious that some of that may be marketing fluff & paid reviews.
