Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. If you wish join us on this thread I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

If you pose a question and we need more contextual information to answer properly we may ask you to fill in the following form. Please only use this form when asked, unsolicited forms will be deleted. Responses to the form can be found here

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

MAY/JUNE 2017: It’s summer and some of us are hourglasses (and otherwise beautifully shaped) that desperately need to bitch and moan about the severe lack of clothes available to us. Also, some of us are recovering from a ‘fine’ butchering to our hair. Don’t ask. Some of us suffer from all of the above. At least the weather is good, wear sunscreen.

Yes bo it is tough :-(, it's all just trial and error like most things! I know onions and beans (not just baked beans) can trigger mine and for some reason Chinese affects me more than an Indian takeaway. Apples also are a no no for me. Luckily I'm ok with sugar! I've started using the 'my fitness pal' app too.

Ollivander84 · 26/07/2017 17:45

I'm having a spot flare up, suspect it's partly change of diet and partly going back to work
I have conjunctivitis so I look like shit Blush

yongnian · 26/07/2017 19:47

Hmm hmm bo yes will look out for that 10€ creme....also like the look of sanoflore magnifica water...
Oh, Chanel palette...pic attached...
And yes, let the shelf-porn-off commence....
Beauty purchases today were only for the daughters (huh).

Oh olli sorry about spot flare up..what do you recommend from nyx if anything?
And does anybody know anything about ricin oil?

Ollivander84 · 26/07/2017 19:59

NYX
Micro brow pencil
Soft matte lip cream
HD powder
HD eye primer

botemp · 27/07/2017 08:31

OMG yong we're long lost easily seduced by inflight sales tweens Chanel twins. Except mine has two little brushes and also a little plastic divider thing to keep it clean (not photographed). Don't know what happened to the velvet pouch that came with it though. Still have yet to figure out what the empty bottom left square is for. I'm actually quite liking the rediscovery of it, the bottom shades seem surprisingly nice for a quick eye look despite being a bit warmer than I'm used to.

Yes the water sounded interesting too, if possibly irritating. Also going to be looking at the Mixa deodorant because it has Niacinamide and Panthenol in it, my armpit skin can get ridiculously irritated and that sounds brilliantly soothing. Was also curious about Avene's version of Cicaplast considering it ranked as number 2 overall.

The NYX brow products are nice if they suit your colouring, on me they are either too dark or warm, or even worse turn warm for inexplicable reasons. The setting sprays are also meant to be good.

Guys am loving the niod ester despite the weird smell (note the upgrade to weird from "really smelly") Grin

Am in the west of Ireland, internet is AWFUL so have not been on much. Seems quiet anyway?

Have been using a Ren Evercalm cleanser for the second cleanse and it all seems to suit my skin better than the creamy cleansers. I must be quite oily really...

Thank you for the sample JDSTER , how are you holding up?

GrimDamnFanjo · 27/07/2017 12:38

kego i've used Nuxe body oil for years. I try to stock up when I vist France. I only use it as a body oil though. There is a light fragrance. I would nip into M&S and try it because if you hate the smell that would be a waste of money.

EnidButton · 27/07/2017 12:57

I have the Nuxe oil Lego. I use it mainly for the scent when I don't want to wear a perfume. It sinks in fast and adds a healthy sheen to the skin but otherwise I'm not sure what else it does. I prefer a thicker cream for body moisturising and I use morrocan oil on my hair. I do like it though, it smells gorgeous. Either look fantastic or Feel Unique often have offers on for Nuxe.

Ollivander84 · 27/07/2017 13:10

I'm off to the opticians after work. Not convinced it's conjunctivitis and I don't like messing about with eyes

yongnian · 27/07/2017 13:21

Doesn't sound nice olli yes Opticians's good plan....hope everything ok...
bo that's mad, I had a feeling they were the same from your description (though clearly you have looked after yours rather better than mine Grin)
Hmm curious also about avene cica as just considering buying LRP cica as everyone here raves about it so am I am nearly at the end of my topicreme one.
Talking of which, slathering cica on a mosquito bite (I react terribly badly, huge swelling etc so normally am religiously at coating myself in deet from 5pm onwards but this one slipped through on the very first night as I hadn't been quick enough to get deet on)...it's in the healing stage now so hoping it will help...
Skin generally reasonably happy otherwise (it likes 30+ degrees). Plastering self in SPF obvs...

Ollivander84 · 27/07/2017 17:44

I have blepharitis. And a dry eye. Needless to say given my optician is in boots, I did a bit of shopping Blush

EnidButton · 27/07/2017 18:53

Get well soon Olli. Hope your retail therapy helped.

My dog is very poorly so I'm feeling quite stressed atm. Skin clearing up though which makes no sense. Hmm

Ollivander84 · 27/07/2017 21:56

Purchases were
NYX HD eye primer (repurchase)
NYX skinny mascara - new to me, want to use for lower lashes
Max factor masterpiece glamour extensions - new to me

JDSTER · 27/07/2017 22:19

wilting and everyone, I'm here. Thanks for asking. I'm not great, as you'd imagine. Funeral was Friday last week.

I'm off work so decided to have a keratin blow dry for the first time. Washed and dried it this morning and it dried nicely. I'll see how it holds up when it's humid. Got a couple of spots which won't clear up (I never get spots which shows how much our skin reacts to our general wellbeing)

Flowers JDSTER

Hope the eyes heal quickly, Olli.

If you're still reading along, otyt hope you're doing okay.

Went a bit mad at Sephora yesterday Blush. Even forgot to take shelf porn pics. If anyone's interested in the Dior exhibit, I've lots of pictures of that... It's a gorgeous exhibit, if you're visiting Paris in the next few months it's definitely worth seeing. I had assumed it was a historical overview type thing but it basically was the entire archive up to the most recent collection. Really impressive exhibit design too if a tad French and overdramatic.

Will try and hit up some pharmacies today. Bought mostly hair stuff, was very underwhelmed by the Kat Von D tattoo liner, and am sorely tempted to get almost the entire Charlotte Gainsborough line for Nars. It's one of the nicest colabs I've ever seen, and I despise colabs usually. Pale people alert, the tinted glowy moisturiser is absolutely gorgeous, it was way too pale (and only comes in deathly pale) for me but I think if you're of Celtic colouring it would be absolutely lovely as a sort of skin perfector with that luminous from within look. The blush stick is a really unusual red but looks really lovely and natural but I'm having yong issues over the 44 euro price tag. Kohl liners are also absolutely lovely in unusual colours, I don't wear kohl much, if ever, but am sorely tempted to now...

I lied, well just remembered. I do have shelf porn, unfortunately it's the pitiful low grade supermarket variety but alluring pumps are on display and all that...

wiltingfast · 28/07/2017 08:31

Oh olli, I hope it is temporary Shock it's a horrible old thing. I've chronic dry eyes and well sick of them.

Ollivander84 · 28/07/2017 08:34

She thinks so, I have dry eyes anyway but the left one just seems to have flared. May just be because I've come back to work so I'm in air con for 8-10hrs a day

yongnian · 28/07/2017 11:09

Oo blepharitis olli nasty, good call on the opticians then, hope it clears soon...
jdster Flowers and welcome back.
bo I've eyed that Colab too and it's not even really my colours....Dior pix please....
I understand the inability to take pix in Sephora due to adrenaline rush....Grin....so I think the shelf-porn off may be mine Grin Grin
Am liking bioderma soin hydrabio, so far...
Taking my time considering my long parapharmacie wish list...

Pupsiecola · 28/07/2017 12:10

Has anyone bought the shigaisen youhou SPF? I can only see one seller on eBay. Any ideas where to buy it from?

TIA

BaliBound · 28/07/2017 13:42

Ok so still skin but legs not face... What do people use on their legs?

I'm ashamed to say mine are neglected and I use absolutely nothing. I think I need to exfoliate and start moisturising, they aren't all that comfortable atm especially when shaving and they just don't look great. My first thought would be the vaseline aloe cream, because that's the only one I'm familiar with from holidays. Body moisturising is new territory for me Blush

Ollivander84 · 28/07/2017 14:07

I've got an addiction to these body scrubs. Have to use in the shower as they're messy but they moisturise too
