I raise you coal tar and TCP for weird but enjoyable scents, and give you road tar. I always have a good huff when passing a road mending session.

Fascinating articles, thank you VP. Has anyone tried Barbara Herman's perfumes? I'm sure they would be worth a sniff. And I love greens so it's good to have a list of modern ones. Another that I think very worth trying is 4160 Tuesdays Ealing Green - beautifully sharp.

I have tried Fathom V and I agree it's not a scent you can sit on the fence about. I liked it but it's absolutely true about it smelling like an old damp boat at sea. DH found it utterly repellant so I'll be using up my sample when he's not around.

As a change from smelling like an old salt or an old lady, yesterday's SOTD was Agonist Isis, so instead I smelt like an old bookshop and loved it. Today's is Aromatics Elixir - green, powdery and very grown up - so I'm probably back in old lady territory.Grin

GreenPolishToGo · 07/03/2017 13:06

VP, your "green sample box from skins", do please tell me more!

ThisThingCalledLove · 07/03/2017 13:19

The only green I really like is Jade, in fact I prefer to the Chanel one (is it Cristalle?). While we are confessing, yes yes to road tar (yum) and TCP. I also love the smell of the alcohol swabs they use on you in hospital Blush

Talking of hospital, I had a recent unexpected stay in hospital (so nothing packed!) and DH packed a bag for me, I asked him to bring perfume but nothing too knickery Winkor too strong for other patients, just a nice one to cheer me up. He selected TF Neroli Portofino (well the PP dupe Grin) and it was perfect. Cheery and Springlike and I think it was lavender in it which I found very comforting!

I think it was luck rather than good judgement, bless him! But I have a couple of hospital trips coming up...does anyone have any recommendations, or thoughts? Last time I was in, the bathrooms were minging as my DC would say, and I couldn't shower anyway so Perfume was a necessity!

My Paris turned up and it's like the 80s in my house today. I feel like I should be wearing a Benetton jumper and perming my hair!

Pestilentialone · 07/03/2017 17:44

green love Ealing Green is it so green and sharp but mellows to something quite different.

Pestilentialone · 07/03/2017 17:48

thingcalled lavender based sounds the way to go in hospital. You could just go for a big bottle of Yardley to cleanse the air. Question would be original or new formula

Imscarlet · 07/03/2017 18:05

I have sprayed Another Oud to give it a second chance and let it develop. I can smell the raspberry coming through now so we'll see how it works out.

GreenPolishToGo · 07/03/2017 18:10

Pestilential yes, Ealing Green is most certainly on my 9ml Commitment Phobia shortlist. I really must narrow it down to pick the other three. Either that or another set of samples...Blush

Ah the 80s, Thing, when I had thick hair and a thin waist instead of vice versa. Sorry to hear about the hospital trips Flowers. How about a big bottle of 4711 Eau de Cologne for freshening up purposes? And for amusement without overpowering the other patients, what about the Atelier Cologne sample set?

ThisThingCalledLove · 07/03/2017 18:59

That cologne sample set looks right up my street! I would love a nice grapefruity scent - I am always disappointed that Jo Malone smells like air freshener on my skin as I like the scents themselves in the bottles.

4711 is inspired - in fact I bought DD the cooling stick as a sort of stress reliever for exams, so will nick this off her Grin Funnily enough she has been looking for a lavender pillow spray, after sniffing The White Company one, so will encourage her to buy one, and steal it myself!

Thank you for all recommendations, I have a scary (but hopefully outpatient) hospital trip tomorrow which I think requires something very reassuring and comforting - I'm thinking Anais Anais. The equivalent of twirling my hair around my finger...

MrsCocoa · 07/03/2017 20:03

Vintage No.19 here today.

Am blessed with lots of 4160 already but my current 9ml shortlist is:

Goodbye Piccadilly (really hoping there is some more available soon...)
Another Kiss by the Fireside
Parallel (haven't smelt but the notes sound great).

MrsSchadenfreude · 07/03/2017 20:06

SOTD is the one I made at 4160 Tuesdays. It's quite spring like today, weather wise, so it was a good choice, as it's a citrussy suntan oil sort of smell.

MrsCocoa · 07/03/2017 20:10

Good Luck for tomorrow Thisthing Flowers - hope all goes smoothly and you're out quickly. Shalimar is comforting but only if you like vanilla I guess.

For grapefruit, what about Aqua Allegoria Pamplelune? Sounds like you should be treating yourself to lovely things.

OP posts:
Judydreamsofhorses · 07/03/2017 20:27

SOTD was MMM Untitled - my eBay purchase arrived yesterday.

florascotianew · 07/03/2017 20:38

Back to Green scents. IMHO nothing compares to the original Vent Vert, now sadly unobtainable; more recent versions are nothing like and I hate them.

But someone up-thread mentioned Blooms in London. Excellent service and great selection. At one time they stocked Carticasi, which is extremely green - just mastic and galbanum with a bit of rose. Not at all subtle, but in the right circumstances I love it. I hope they'll have it back in stock sometime soon.

Imscarlet · 07/03/2017 21:30

My Another Oud hasn't changed much as time passes - unlike the Midnight Oud that kept developing in different directions on me last night. There is a sharp bitter incense smell which, though it has died down into something more palatable, it still remains as the overpowering note. There is something about it that catches the back of the throat. Is that just Oud? Is that what it's supposed to do? Is it sharpness in the raspberry or the bergamot?

GreenPolishToGo · 07/03/2017 22:04

Wishing you well for tomorrow Thing.Flowers I think you deserve to treat yourself to something very special too.

Scarlet I am very impressed at the determined way you are ploughing through your JHAG samples. I think I've tried three or four at most. Must try harder...

I'm with you on the Cellier formulation of Vent Vert, Flora. I do like the Calice Becker version but to me it's a completely different and much milder perfume. Your description of Carticasi is interesting me strangely. But I am a total galbanum junkie - it was love at first sniff for MMM Untitled here.

I think my 4160 Tuesdays 9ml shortlist is going to be Ealing Green, Dirty Honey, What I Did On My Holidays and Sunshine & Pancakes... But I am tempted by so many others. I'd also love to make my own perfume there sometime - it would be a green one Grin.

Imscarlet · 07/03/2017 22:30

That's because I don't have a million other samples to go through, not like the rest of you!! Wink (slowly closing scentsamples.uk page......)

Indeed, best of luck tomorrow this thing called love. Hope it is uneventful and quick, and your perfume choice is suitably apt!

VintagePerfumista · 08/03/2017 06:25

Good luck Thisthing Flowers

My go-to-under-stress scents are Anais Anais original, Dune and PP Infusions D'Iris.

I'm impressed with all of you trying the JHAGs. I have them all looking at me going "pick me pick me" but after the boakfest of Another Oud I am wary.

Ealing Green was in my green set so might have a rummage for that, if you promise it won't make me smell like I've rubbed a camel's backside on my arm?

Imscarlet · 08/03/2017 08:09

Try Midnight Oud or Lady Vengence. Another Oud finally settled into something not unpleasant at 1am last night. I can still smell it. After showering, I'm going for Not a perfume. I might go molecule 01 on one wrist for comparison. I don't rate molecule 01 at all. It smells the same on everyone I've sprayed it on - vaguely musky.

MrsCocoa · 08/03/2017 08:33

Green - I'm planning om going to make a green one this year too! Shout if you want to co-ordinate.

So I dug our Midnight Oud last night. Thought the opening was unpleasantly screechy, and then that geranium note and oud was not a great combo, but once past that, it settled into a softer rose oud and was more enjoyable.

You've spurred me on to wear Citizen Queen today - powdery leather.

VintagePerfumista · 08/03/2017 08:53

Right, I found Amazingreen first.

Well, big meh.

It smells vaguely melon-y (will look at notes in a mo' but I'm not as good as most of you lot on notes) then after at least 6 squirts to even smell anything other than "sweet water" settles into, well, watery sweet. It's kind of CK One/Davidoff Clear Water/Acqua di Gio but not as strong as any of them.

I used half the sample 2 hours ago and can smell nothing now!

GreenPolish- this is the sample set (and obvs where I got the ^ magnificent (not) Amazinggreen from!) www.skins.nl/en/parfum-discovery-set-groen.html

I got about 4 of the sample sets, they are beautifully packaged, haven't tried many of them yet. (creature of habit, me, as you all know!)

VintagePerfumista · 08/03/2017 09:00

...and now-smell-this sums it up perfectly...

"there really isn't anything else here to set Amazingreen apart from any other "green" on the mainstream market — it just smells like your basic sort of green, unisex verging on masculine, mostly clean, mostly fresh."

LesIncompetents · 08/03/2017 09:41

Wishing you luck today *thisthing.
*
I quite liked Lady Vengeance and Mad Madame, I seem to remember they're both quite rosy? Used up the samples but didn't love them enough to get a FB.

I'd love to do the 4160's workshop too, although I'd really want to make a gourmand that smells like violet cream chocolates Smile

SOTD is Lutece again today, it has a bit of the old powdery make-up, dressing table type vibe going on.

Judydreamsofhorses · 08/03/2017 10:26

Hope today goes well, thisthing. SOTD here is FM Lipstick Rose - so springy and lovely.

GreenPolishToGo · 08/03/2017 13:00

VP thank you, the skins green samples do sound like something I'd have fun with even if Amazingreen isn't all that amazing. And I promise you Ealing Green will not make you smell like a camel's backside, not unless it is a scrubbed camel who has slept in a pile of fresh garden prunings overnight. It starts off with such a sharp green that it reminds me of Vent Vert, but it is a very, very different aroma of green. You might not like it but I'd be surprised if it repelled you.

On the subject of greens here is something else to read Has anyone tried the Library of Fragance greens? Or indeed any Library of Fragrance scents?

That sounds a great idea MrsC. Smile Actually we should all go to 4160 Tuesdays and design our own scent. We could call it The Vipers' Outing. Grin

SOTD is Ealing Green. Good intentions of knocking off another JHAG sample got derailed by all this green chat. Maybe tomorrow...

LilyLover · 08/03/2017 13:32

Hello all, have lurked on these perfume threads for long enough now for my credit card to have taken a real bashing! I'd like to ask for some advice, I'm going through a nostalgic phase and am hankering after a bottle of Kingdom by Alexander McQueen as it was the first scent my DH bought for me and I loved it. Nearly fainted when I saw the prices on EBay but have bought a body lotion from there which I slather on. Can anyone suggest a similar scent? I've checked Fragrantica and a few people on there say a FCUK perfume has some similarities and it's cheap so I might give it a go. Any ideas gratefully received.
