I'm sorry, is it 1998?

I went shopping for the first time in ages today and these tops were everywhere. Took me right back to the 90's! I had a fine array of vest tops to put over my tee shirts but I think I'll give it a miss this time round - my very pert 34B kahunas are sadly no longer up to the strain. (Nor are they still 34B or pert Grin). Isn't it funny how fashions seem to roll back round again?

I loved the babydoll dresses over tight t-shirts. In fact I used to buy a fair few of them in lingerie ranges.

I've still got my DMs and still wear them. Fashionistas wear them once a decade when they are in, but some of us are in DMs for life!

I still do my makeup in 90s neutrals a lot of the time - it's my go-to always-work-safe look.

My eyebrows will be back in style! They didn't survive the mid-90s tweezer massacre. I hope for a swift and sharp end to the "2 slugs mating" face plumage of the last few years.

Tiny rucksacks were the most practical handbags I ever owned.

I can't wait to see if the trend for wearing dungarees tightly belted with bib and straps dangling loose will come back or if that is a bridge too far?

Maudlinmaud · 19/02/2017 09:33

Rucksacks have been back a few years, I had a tapestry one in primary school early 90s and then they got really tiny mid 90s. I bought a bomber recently with tapestry birds on the shoulders, I haven't worn it yet. Not brave enough.

venusinscorpio · 19/02/2017 10:32

YY Tanaqui I was doing floral strappy dresses over bodies/tops with sleeves in about '92/3 ish. I was 16/17. So early 90s.

I've always liked the slip dress over a Tee - prettiness with attitude. I don't do pretty any more but I'll enjoy seeing it on other people.

It would be even nicer though, to see something new again. I think the last time anyone in fashion had an original idea was arguably the body: not the best idea, I grant you but I'd still take new over twice reheated leftovers.

AteRiri · 19/02/2017 11:26

So I guess babydoll dress over a shirt with sleeves and DMs would be cool now.

FrustratedFrugal · 19/02/2017 11:36

Floisme I think each decade manages to develop something new. It's not clear yet what it will be but athleisure, yoga clothes as outerwear, skinnies with ballet flats and bretons, the new more casual dress code for office, sleeve tattoos, glowy skin, matte liquid lipstick, Instagram brow, ghds, sea salt spray, beard oil, man buns - these would be my candidates for a 2010s revival in 2030s Wink

SuperFlyHigh · 19/02/2017 11:44

I do remember wearing strappy dresses (skimpy ones) and even sometimes skinny strappy vest tops, but when you have decent C cup breasts it's not the best look (compared to my teeny breasted friends who loved them).

I also didn't like skimpy skinny strap vest tops for going out whereas my friends did...

One Christmas the friends kindly bought me a shiny/sparkly spaghetti strap evening clubbing top, think I wore it out once then it was consigned to, nope, never gonna wear that again!

Floisme · 19/02/2017 11:54

See I would say they were all a different riff on an old look, Frugal but not properly new. Mind you I'd settle for that at the moment. When I saw the last Vogue, it didn't even seem to be trying to put a new spin on the 90s. It's so lazy.

I guess I'm frustrated (I need to borrow your user name!) I'd dearly love to walk into a shop and see one thing I haven't worn already but I'm beginning to wonder if it's ever going to happen again.

DesolateWaist · 19/02/2017 12:58

I keep thinking the 90s were ten years ago.

Do you mean they weren't?

I was in a very naice and hipster cafe today and a 20 something woman came in wearing a corduroy miniskirt that had a dungaree type top to it, over a short sleeve t-shirt with thick tights and DMs. Very Friends.

originalbiglymavis · 19/02/2017 13:25

I'm still mourning my very expensive mad cut Levis denim skirt. It was asymmetrical with a bit of a kilt going on at the back.

burnishedsilver · 19/02/2017 13:42

Its all very Beverly Hills 902190. Brings back memories.

GraceGrape · 19/02/2017 13:47

At the beginning of the 90s, I had some very trendy pairs of black cycling shorts with neon stripes downthebsidws. I haven't seen these make a comeback fortunately

GraceGrape · 19/02/2017 13:48

In the very early 90s, I had some lovely black cycling shorts with neon stripes down the sides. I haven't seen a resurgence in these fortunately.

GraceGrape · 19/02/2017 13:49

Oops, two posts.

wineusuallyhelps · 19/02/2017 13:52

Gracegrape I wore cycling shorts too, with a Fruit of the Loom t shirt over the top, with floral black daps. Why?! Confused

Sometimes the cycling shorts were white...

TheCakes · 19/02/2017 13:52

DesolateWaist, that's what I'm wearing today. Dungaree courderoy dress, thick tights, band T-shirt.
I've got Absolute 90s on the radio too.
I'm 40 Grin

IJustLostTheGame · 19/02/2017 14:15

BlushBlushBlush
I wore trousers under skirts and dresses a lot.
I wore bindis
I had yellow lens sunglasses for clubbing.
I used to have lots of little buns on my head.
I wore the biggest skater jeans I could find with the teeniest vest tops.

Graphista · 19/02/2017 14:16

Omg! I'd blocked out the cycling shorts!

That was 'summer uniform' at college 1989/90 - white cycling shorts (wtf was I thinking?!) oversize t-shirt (usually logo or band/film/motto) and ... The piece de resistance - tropical print plimmys!

Very similar to these BlushBlush

Graphista · 19/02/2017 14:20

M and S have ski pants!

Oh dear lord Shock

Circa 1985 I had 'denim' pinstripe ones - thought I was so cool!

Nicky42 · 19/02/2017 14:25

Oh memories with the acupuncture shoes!!! I had a pair that were stolen at Glastonbury festival...I'd forgotten how hideous they were!

venusinscorpio · 19/02/2017 14:35

Yes, I remember a holiday in Florida in about 1990 (14 yo) where I bought black cycling shorts with a lime green stripe and a lime green boob tube. I never wore them here though Smile

Scoose · 19/02/2017 15:05

Anyone remember the oriental trend I had a red satin skirt with slits up the side and a black t shirt with a red shiny dragon on it thought I was the dogs until I saw a kids to presenter wearing the same top Grin
