I'm sorry, is it 1998?

I went shopping for the first time in ages today and these tops were everywhere. Took me right back to the 90's! I had a fine array of vest tops to put over my tee shirts but I think I'll give it a miss this time round - my very pert 34B kahunas are sadly no longer up to the strain. (Nor are they still 34B or pert Grin). Isn't it funny how fashions seem to roll back round again?

I'm sorry, didn't people stop staying 'is it >YEAR,?' in the 1990s?

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 18/02/2017 17:47

I remember thinking I was dancing like a pro once wearing a body and then realised my poppers had burst open and the body I was wearing had pulled out of my trousers! Shock
I had to rush to the toilets to refasten and didn't wear it again.

SuperFlyHigh · 18/02/2017 17:47

I rather liked bodysuits and had a few... Which is strange why I liked them as I've got a long body, long legs and have always had a bust (C cup at very least).

I had a lovely pair of Victorian lace up brown ankle boots which I wish I'd kept.

Same with chokers, liked them, wore them. Saw someone wearing a nice boot lace ribbon tie one the other day.

creampinkrose · 18/02/2017 17:49

Yep, also had a body. A black one. Worn with jeans and a waistcoat.

Slouch boots were 80s, surely. Late 80s, but still 80s.

SuperFlyHigh · 18/02/2017 17:50

Who remembers about the same time the white shirts stretch or otherwise usually with ruffles and a black dress/pinafore normally with a flounce or ruffles or two but stretchy? You could wear them out, like clubbing?

Friend had these (as did I) but she'd moved to Ireland. Her best friend in Ireland who was a few dress sizes than her borrowed said White and black outfit and stretched them a lot, friend who'd loaned them to her wasn't best pleased!

Who recalls espadrilles?! Wedge ones with ties?? They were in last year and I bought some.... But I had loads of pairs of espadrilles with wedges or without when I was younger.

TheFirstMrsDV · 18/02/2017 17:51

I remember a LOT of spandex boot cut trousers in bright colours.
Platform flip flops
Hair in bunches
Vest tops everywhere.

Do you think trouser skirts will make a comeback too?

SuperFlyHigh · 18/02/2017 17:51

I mend stretch white top/shirt with ruffles!

creampinkrose · 18/02/2017 17:51

Does anyone remember that pretty awful fashion for skirts worn over trousers? I don't mean leggings, but actual trousers!

creampinkrose · 18/02/2017 17:52

Spooky X post MrsDV!

EggsEleven · 18/02/2017 17:52

Slouch boots were definitely about in the 90s too. In the 80s I would've been wearing black school shoes. Though I lived in Ireland so we may have been very behind the times.

SuperFlyHigh · 18/02/2017 17:52

TheFirst you're giving me a headache with trousers skirts etc!

SuperFlyHigh · 18/02/2017 17:54

Eggs my friend lived in a town not far from Dublin back in 1998 or about then... And as far as I know the Irish weren't that far behind the times, though my friend did used to get the bus or DART into Dublin for her fashion fixes.

WilburIsSomePig · 18/02/2017 17:57

Rose just for you. Grin

Where have you been OP? Grunge has been back all winter and will be well into spring looking at what was in H&M this week.

I'm more shocked these are back 😱

I'm sorry, is it 1998?
TheFirstMrsDV · 18/02/2017 18:01

The trouser/skirt thing got worse as it went on. As often happens with clothing fads there was a trickle down to really really cheap shops like What She Wants.

Their version of the skirt trouser was a flap of crimpoline wrapped round the top of a pair of flares that creased if you sneezed on them.

TheFirstMrsDV · 18/02/2017 18:03

I was a new mum in the early 90s.
I used to push my kids round in their front/back double buggy wearing my neoprene wedge mules, spandex boot cut trousers, double layer vest and my hair in bunches or four plaits (Saturday Night la la la la la la la).
Oh and a shortie puffa jacket if it was chilly.

Such style!

PerspicaciaTick · 18/02/2017 18:05

My 13yo DD is dressing like Bananarama circa 1983. She doesn't understand why I keep sniggering and dancing like Dexy's Midnight Runners.

Megatherium · 18/02/2017 18:11

When I go round clothes shops at the moment, I repeatedly find myself thinking "This stuff was pig-ugly in the 70s and, 40 years later, it's still hideous".

BBCNewsRave · 18/02/2017 18:13

Quite pleased at the vest top thing! If I dare to try it...
Have some lovely strappy vest tops but UK is cold, quite practical when you think about it. Grin

I used to have horrific camoflage print flares. And massive platform trainers. And all those tiny clips in my hair, or pigtails a la Baby Spice. Shock

Loved the skirt/trousers look though, especially 60s floral print skirts.... And flares so big they were a trip hazard.

TheFirstMrsDV · 18/02/2017 18:14

See could get my head round tat Perspica, what I can't deal with is the appearance of the sort of thing those vacant eyed, wedge headed, nylon clad audience members at TOTPs would wear.

I mean, who the bloody hell wants staticy, batwinged, cheap knits in grey and red teamed with a synthetic pencil skirt and shoes that make you walk like a duck?

Confused
PerspicaciaTick · 18/02/2017 18:19

MrsDV, and that was just what I wore to school!

SoupDragon · 18/02/2017 18:20

Body's were a nightmare, especially when out clubbing and trying to go to the loo after a few drinks

Apparently you could just pull them to one side for a wee.

One good thing about the 90s coming round again is that it must mean the 80s have fucked off.

Willow2016 · 18/02/2017 18:20

Oh I loved my wedge espadrilles, very comfy they were too!
And I had a few bodysuits too, my fave was crushed black velvet but they were a pain to go to loo in.

I loved my velvet and lace chokers, I was a bit of a goth before it was even coined/ fashionable!

Oh and 'peasant skirts' and 'peasant tops' had a few of them too.

Cheescloth shirts and denim bomber jackets!

humanfemale · 18/02/2017 18:21

OH and me have been watching all the Seinfeld episodes from scratch and seems like Elaine's clothes are fashionable again!
