I'm sorry, is it 1998?

I went shopping for the first time in ages today and these tops were everywhere. Took me right back to the 90's! I had a fine array of vest tops to put over my tee shirts but I think I'll give it a miss this time round - my very pert 34B kahunas are sadly no longer up to the strain. (Nor are they still 34B or pert Grin). Isn't it funny how fashions seem to roll back round again?

The worst 90s look was that beachwear as streetwear crap. Sarongs with crop tops and flip flops, in the middle of a busy city street nowhere near a body of water? Just add a bindhi for twat bingo, insulting and appropriating Hinduism for good measure!

akwgreen · 18/02/2017 18:43

I thought I looked the dog's bollocks when in reality I must have looked like a right twat. But so did everyone else!

This is true. Grin

QueenofLouisiana · 18/02/2017 18:51

I don't think I'll be dusting off my cropped spaghetti strap vests, mini kilts or nightdress style dresses. If I stitched several of them together, there just might be enough material to cover me decently!

Are wrap skirts which flapped embarrassingly going to reappear next?

SuperFlyHigh · 18/02/2017 18:58

Willow et al....

The only thing I do miss is that clothes seemed cheaper then but they also seemed better made and in less man made materials.

I had some lovely nubuck cream/Ivory sandals from Hobbs, nice shoes from Pied a Terre (various styles) and other nice clothes I don't recall exactly now but they tended to last. Unlike now!

GallivantingWildebeest · 18/02/2017 19:00

And leggings are back in fashion too! The Sundsay Times magazine says so. Yay.

SuperFlyHigh · 18/02/2017 19:05

I hate to break it to you Gallivanting but leggings have been back in fashion for at least 6-7 years now!

My ex colleague introduced me to them (I borrowed a pair of her white ones once when I stayed at her house unplanned, bad move - the leggings were very see through!). But now I wear black ones a fair bit, I have some on now as it Goes with a jumper!

But louder printed ones are coming back in vogue, that's what The Sunday Times magazine means. Wink

Expellibramus · 18/02/2017 19:06

*Body's were a nightmare, especially when out clubbing and trying to go to the loo after a few drinks

Apparently you could just pull them to one side for a wee. *

Not when you were wearing them over tights 😳

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 18/02/2017 19:08

You wore a body over tights Expel? Were you in Fame? Wink

Patsy's body fail

wineusuallyhelps · 18/02/2017 19:11

I used to wear a black body with a gingham skirt. Aren't those two items in vogue now?! 😂

Cwtchythings · 18/02/2017 19:12

Ooh I was well into vest tops over a bodysuit. Heather shimmer lipstick anyone?

mrsBeverleygoldberg · 18/02/2017 19:12

Holister have them too. I saw them when I was going past. I wore it in the 90s. Also the blocky heels on shoes. Fashion is cyclical.

Arsenicinthesugarbowl · 18/02/2017 19:15

Whenever my almost 18 year old DD brings new items of clothing into the house lately she announces them with and eye roll and the words"I know Mum...you had this in the 90s". There is so much 90s stuff around lately and I've obviously mentioned it a few times!Blush

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 18/02/2017 19:16

Perspicacia That in a nutshell is the main worry with a body. No one wants half a random gussett flapping around.

TheFirstMrsDV · 18/02/2017 19:16

Perspicacia Grin

I was much more of the madonna, cyndi laupa, punk/new wave stylee.
I would have looked at you like this Hmm

Sorry Grin

TheFirstMrsDV · 18/02/2017 19:19

In the 80s I had crushed velvet red/maroon body that I wore over black crushed velvet leggings with black cowboy boots.
I accessorized with MASSIVE faux Chanel earrings.

Luckily not many people had cameras back in the day.

MrsMeeseeks · 18/02/2017 19:20

I thought they were hideous back then and I still think so now! The tops are bad enough, but strappy dresses over t-shirts are even worse!

SymbollocksInteractionism · 18/02/2017 19:20

I was in urban outfitters last week and it was exactly like being back in the mid nineties!

Graphista · 18/02/2017 19:33

My dd has gone out tonight wearing:

Black roll neck sleeveless body

High waist ripped jeans

Brown make up

Platform boots!

Almost identical outfit to what I was wearing when I met her dad 30+ years ago Grin yet I would apparently know NOTHING about today's fashion Wink

Once on a night out a group of friends and I and then boyfriend (dds dad) couldn't get taxi back to share house (early uni years) passing a wooded area one friend urgently needed pee. Was wearing body. She managed to undo and pee AND wipe using dock leaves (nurses are nothing if not resourceful Grin) but couldn't do it up again? She was trying to find the back bit basically 'chasing her tail' like a bloody puppy! (She was pretty pissed as was I) dds dad (relatively sober he had work next day) had to redress her (tucked body into jeans) I nearly wet myself laughing while dds dad kept shouting 'ffs stand still!!' Stevie are those reebok freestyles?

Yes I love the stuff in Topshop etc at the moment, very much takes me back to my youth ('90s - this is 2nd time around for me). My younger self would have been delighted that I can now afford it all but my current self won't touch the synthetics.

Makes my heart sing a little bit to see it all back Grin

Expellibramus · 18/02/2017 19:42

You wore a body over tights Expel? Were you in Fame?Wink

In my head I was Grin - did I mention the stretchy mini Lycra mini skirt over the top?

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 18/02/2017 19:47

I think the stretchy mini skirt over the top rescues the outfit Grin

venusinscorpio · 18/02/2017 19:48

Just add a bindhi for twat bingo, insulting and appropriating Hinduism for good measure!

Oh yes. My best friend went to India before uni in 1994. Guess what she brought me back Grin I obviously didn't wear them!

venusinscorpio · 18/02/2017 19:50

I've just bought a crushed velvet dress that is exactly the same as one I had in 1995. Which inexplicably I threw out Grin

MrsMeeseeks · 18/02/2017 19:50

I had forgotten all about the bindhi trend!
