Continuing from the previous thread. It's always so lovely to see new posters come and talk perfume. Everyone is welcome. Come and tell us your SOTD ( scent of the day) or ask us anything perfumey. Someone will know the answer! Get stuck in and get sniffing. You'll find no snobbery here!

Do you know, I've never smelled Coco, and everyone talks about it...I must have a sniff.

I am in Cuir Cordoba. Was pondering my ever so slightly ginormous sample box, but nothing I pulled out appealed. So I let myself choose Grin

Statelychangers · 09/12/2016 09:25

I confess that I have probably stuck to Coco longer than I should have done because my kids love it - they say it smells of Mum (in a good way) that sounds awful doesn't it Blush and even my dog ends up smelling of Coco because I often give him cuddle after I spray myself.

GetAHaircutCarl · 09/12/2016 09:50

Another Coco fan here, though I don't currently have a bottle.

Also, Coco Mademoiselle is a guilty pleasure Blush for days when I feel like a teen Grin.

SOTD is Black Opium. Very sweet on me, very heavy on the vanilla. Comforting but I feel like there ought to be more to it. And maybe there is on others?

twilightcafe · 09/12/2016 09:55

SOTD is Jo Malone Nectarine Blossom and Honey layered with PP Nutmeg and Ginger.
I received the NB&H as a Christmas present years ago, but never got on with it because the smell is too sickly on me. But the Nutmeg and Ginger spices it up nicely.

VintagePerfumista · 09/12/2016 09:56

No, I think Black Opium is universally panned. (like Poison Girl, Miss Dior Cherie etc, all the money spinners)

I've yet to find anyone who likes it. I liked the idea of it, and went off to hunt Black Opium and Black Orchid on the same expedition. No comparison. One is the sweet sticky should-be-pink category, and the other is exceptional!

RosieLig · 09/12/2016 10:27

Hi all, loving the perfume chat.

Anyone tried Tom Ford's Oud Wood? Just tried it today- it's gorgeous!

Here's the blurb...sorry it's in capitals! 😳

RARE. EXOTIC. DISTINCTIVE.

ONE OF THE MOST RARE, PRECIOUS, AND EXPENSIVE INGREDIENTS IN A PERFUMER'S ARSENAL, OUD WOOD IS OFTEN BURNED IN THE INCENSE-FILLED TEMPLES OF BHUTAN. EXOTIC ROSE WOOD AND CARDAMOM GIVE WAY TO A SMOKY BLEND OF RARE OUD WOOD, SANDALWOOD AND VETIVER. TONKA BEAN AND AMBER ADD WARMTH AND SENSUALITY.

Calminaqualm · 09/12/2016 10:40

Black Orchid was the answer when I asked the dental receptionist what fragrance she was wearing. Absolutely gorgeous and brightened up a miserable morning! (Only a check-up and nothing to be done, hurrah.)

SOTD is Captured by Candlight by 4160 Tuesdays to get me in the seasonal mood. It's cognac, Christmas pudding and oak. I keep sniffing my arm!

Statelychangers · 09/12/2016 11:54

Yes I tried Oud Wood on Saturday - the scent really developed as I wore it and the longer it was on my skin the better it got. Disappointed with Tobacco & Vanilla though, it was too heavy on the spice especially on Dh - who smelled like a big bag of cheap Christmas Pot Pourri.

HooArghhhEwe · 09/12/2016 13:01

No! I love tabacco vanille!

I wore it for a few years but DH kept stealing it.

OCSockOrphanage · 09/12/2016 13:08

Have not tried any of the TFs; this must be rectified!

SoTD is La Myrrh, first tried as a sample from a kind person hereabouts and now using the sample I bought. Lovely, but quite odd and I'm never sure whether it is sweet or bitter, the notes come and go as it wears. I would be tempted by an FB but apparently, it's only sold in the SL Paris shop; is this true does anyone know?

Still waiting on my PP dupes, impatiently, although I'd prefer them to come on Monday so my menfolk don't see my shame.

MrsCocoa · 09/12/2016 17:14

Captured by Candlelight gives off such strong boozy fumes I daren't wear it to work in case people think I drink before coming in to the office.

It's lovely but a bit too much on the upper register for my tastes - the heft of the pudding and the oak-panelled room I'm expecting don't quite deliver. So am experimenting with layering - tried it with Yatagan today.

La Myrrhe sounds interesting OC.

VintagePerfumista · 09/12/2016 18:31

Just went out to do some tutoring in Heeley Cuir Pleine Fleur. Didn't get any Cuir, got a waft of tobacco, and then the signature (IMO) Heeley Brut 33 thing.

OC- it may be coming your way!

AnotherPinkiePieStory · 09/12/2016 19:59

Yes love Tom ford. oc get your nose to his stand. I don't think you'll be disappointed. Oud wood is overpowering as it should be and violet orchid is blissful as others have said. I have a pp basket full of TF dupes just waiting for me to buckle and buy.

Love dental receptionist in black orchid. Bet room smelt fab. My very foxy dentist always smelt amazing which eased the pain and financial hardship!
I bought myself an early xmas present of fab perfume/ cosmetics books: pretty iconic by sali Hughes and Perfume a century of scents by Lizzie ostrom. I'm going to binge over xmas once DC are in bed!

OCSockOrphanage · 09/12/2016 20:18

I have a sensible amount of credit at Scent Samples (for a couple of unloved bottles I sold them) so I can indulge a bit. Your best TF samples; I think they have most of them. What is best? There's no local counter.

DH and DS are both telling me today's haircut is "boyish", so I probably need to lean girlish, which I don't really do. Tomboy at 60, how sad is that........... help...

VintagePerfumista · 10/12/2016 05:54

I only know Black Orchid but it's very special IMO. (I remember posting on here when I sniffed it first in duty free that it was one of those Coromandel moments when you go "OMGOMGOMG!!!!"

I might go for a PP selection, will wait till am in UK over Christmas so I can have sprays instead of roll-ons.

PerfumeAndCatsAndBooks · 10/12/2016 08:46

I've just bought the PP Tobacco and Vanilla, it's smells very medicinal at first - big hit of Vicks! But the dry down is much better (I think this is true of a lot of PP stuff) and very vanillary without being pink sweet. I am also tempted to indulge in a bit more Tom Ford but it will have to be PP dupes! I'm not usually a fan of vanilla but now I think I might have to explore a bit more, so any recommdations are welcome!

For those of us who like Opium (but not Black Opium! ) may I recommend my Christmas candle? It is Frankincense and Myhrr by Shearer (UK based, cheaper and much higher quality than the ubiquitous Yankee) and it smells like Opium in a candle! I think the Myhrr note must be the same in both, but it's lovely and one of those candles that has a scent even when not lit. I have one each December when my lights go up.

(Sorry I am a NCer after so much Daily Mail fuckwittery, I have had a few weeks off perfume after absent mindedly spraying perfume on a new wrist tattoo - ouch! It's very hard to change rituals that you do everyday but I'm trying to remember ELBOWS NOT WRISTS. Really I should spray a cloud of scent and just walk through it but I'm just not classy enough Grin)

PerfumeAndCatsAndBooks · 10/12/2016 08:56

sock I hear you about "boyish" thing. In my mind I'm an elegant Chanel No.5, pearl necklace and fitted shift dress wearing elegant lady in her 20s, in RL I am a clumsy woman in her 40s currently sporting unbrushed pink hair, DH's jumper and leggings with cats on...I smell elegant though!

By the way, I also imagine everyone else on this thread as elegant, gorgeous smelling and perfectly groomed beautiful women...

Smile
MrsCocoa · 10/12/2016 09:04

OC - my TF top picks (I haven't tried many of the private blends):

If you're a vetiver fiend, Grey Vetiver is a very refined, cool vetiver.

Noir de Noir is a fabulous killer dark rose chypre.

If you like incense, and they had Sahara Noir in stock, would highly recommend for the dry, churchy frankincence.

Amd things I want to try:

Plum Japonais, Italian Cypress, Ombre de Hyacinth.

AnotherPinkiePieStory · 10/12/2016 09:25

Oh yes perfume please picture me as elegant! I'm not sat here in my glitter strewn kitchen eating leftover chocolate while children watch Pokemon on TV! And DH sleeps off party hangover!

mrscocoa I didn't see Sahara noir and I love sound of that!
My TF recommendations are tobacco vanilla, mandarin one, portofino, noir de noir and velvet orchid. And somehow another 3 fell into my pp basket!?!

VintagePerfumista · 10/12/2016 10:14

ooooh lovely postie just brought me more samples!

And as luck would have it, I am not yet perfumed for the morning.....what is it to be for my 13 yr olds at midday?

Have gone for L'Air du Desert Marocain
First thought is medicinal in manner of Coromandel/Black Orchid etc.

Back in half an hour once it's settled!

VintagePerfumista · 10/12/2016 10:22

Now it reminds me of an 80s aftershave, but in a good way. Kouros possibly.

Yes! A quick google confirms. Lots of similar notes.

My, it's lovely.

OCSockOrphanage · 10/12/2016 16:04

Thanks to all for the TF recs; they have 38 of his but knowing my luck, everything will be waiting for stock. So far I have only managed to add 1270 (Frapin) to the basket, then t'internet collapsed so I shall have to start again. I love the sound of Sahara Noir, as SoTD is Heeley Cardinal which is very incense-y, plus a dab of the Frapin on the back from the last whisper of a Nose sample (but it's overwhelmed by the Cardinal). Sadly, it all has to be done in one go as they have given me a code but it won't work unless I spend at least the threshold amount.

Like Pinkie, I imagine you all as gloriously glamorous, elegantly dressed for your exciting lives and divinely scented at all times! I rather like my salt and pepper pixie cut, but the chaps seem to prefer the curly mop it turns into after eight weeks! It is easy to look after and works with jeans and boots for muddy walks as well as the roles that my function as the oil in the machine entails.

FatGirlWithChocolate · 10/12/2016 16:46

Today I am wearing Poudree by NR - love it, but always worry it's too strong..not very good (confident) with perfumes so my only others are Red Roses by Jo Malone, and Cath Kidston Rose (which is probably quite cringeworthy, but I really love it)..do you have any suggestions that I would like in those kind of scent familys? TIA xx

VintagePerfumista · 10/12/2016 16:51

at being elegant. I am currently under a plaid blanket marking work, in a too large pair of Asda fleecy jammies and an old falling to pieces Gap jumper. Have run out of contact lens solution so also have my ancient and half broken specs on my nose.

I smell so good I could shag myself though. Grin LadDM gone on ever lengthening FB list.

VintagePerfumista · 10/12/2016 16:54

FatGirl- Hippie Rose is rose (durrr) and patchouli if that rocks your boat....L'Occitane Rose en reines (or something) is a lovely pure rose.
For powdery you can't beat the classic Guerlains. L'Heure Bleue is kind of medicinal and balsamy and powdery, Apres L'Ondee is violet and powder and Vol de Nuit (my favourite of the 3) is harder to define- warm summer night powdery.
