Continuing from the previous thread. It's always so lovely to see new posters come and talk perfume. Everyone is welcome. Come and tell us your SOTD ( scent of the day) or ask us anything perfumey. Someone will know the answer! Get stuck in and get sniffing. You'll find no snobbery here!

Sorry Green - I'm tired. The 4160 is the dirty, more cosy one. Seville is perkier, and very long lasting - great for Spring.

VintagePerfumista · 22/02/2017 06:09

I have an issue with the name of Seville a L'Aube as you may know Grin It's so long-lasting and quite heavy I find for what is essentially a citrus, that it ought to be Seville a' Twilight (French degree is now 29 yrs old and hasn't been used since 1988 but I imagine it's something Crepuscule-y Grin)

It's got a whomp of lavender in it as well iirc? I haven't worn it since last summer but in the spirit of the contagion of the thread I might rummage for it today!

MMM- is an odd one for me. When I got my sample, I found it meh. Then I became addicted to it and wore it constantly for about 2 weeks, then suddenly it went meh again. It also really reminds me of something that someone used to wear....but I can't put my finger on this one. Possibly Cabotine, but I'm not sure.

I have worn my Eau du Sud-Jade combo for 2 days running now. The EdS will be finished soon (only a 2ml sample) but by god it's good.

MrsCocoa · 22/02/2017 10:15

I' don't get a distinct lavender note - just that slightly effervescent hint of the presence of something aromatic. Don't get a clear sense of incense either. It wasn't quite what I was expecting (was thinking about orange rather than orange blossom) but I can't imagine being without it now. Think it's my favourite L'Artisan.

SotD: Madame Rochas. Have a second miniature (boxed in old brocade bottle) - the aldehydes here are not off. Green - you're right it's delicate but unexpectedly fresh/natural (garden in springtime?).

LesIncompetents · 22/02/2017 14:30

I love Seville a L'Aube too, but only seem to reach for it in summer. Might have to dig out my bottle now!

SOTD is EL Beautiful, doesnt really feel like the right weather for it today (grey and chilly) but I'm enjoying it nonetheless.

VintagePerfumista · 22/02/2017 16:33

I started off in Seville, but have now showered and gone back to Eau du Sud which is clearly this week's hit. It has replaced the Tauers as my go-to fragrance, especially as here in the sud, it is getting quite springlike!

Took possession of an old bottle of Miss Dior Eau de Cologne, no idea where it dates back to, the box is old and tatty, but the inside bottle is sealed. Undecided whether to open it for a sniff, or leave it.....

OCSockOrphanage · 22/02/2017 17:25

No perfume, no point, no sense of smell, another darn cold. Hope it's short-lived.

MrsCocoa · 22/02/2017 17:57

Silly question Vintage - but do you collect them but sometimes not sniff or wear them?

Small perfume party earlier with kids: slightly sweaty (post Bike ride) teens stunning in Maxed Out (who'd've known?) and 7 year old sniffing himself in the Shalimar he picked out all afternoon (I smell like a rabbit with soft fur and big eyes).

GreenPolishToGo · 22/02/2017 18:37

VP open it, open it, open it! Is it a black and white houndstooth check bottle? Eau de cologne must be old, and sealed hopefully means it's perfect. I bought a half-used bottle recently and had to pour it away because it had completely turned. It just had the very faintest trace of powderiness left under the nasty burnt odour. I was luckier with the next bottle I came across but it was EdT, and so much harder to date.

My mother loved it so it conjures up my childhood for me. It sat on her dressing table in its distinctive check packaging for years. I think it's the most likely candidate for the Dior perfume Assia Wevill soaked a blade of grass in to send to Ted Hughes. This article about it is fascinating.

I'm still astounded that a perfume with such a pedigree was stripped of its name and replaced with a pink imposter.

As we are doing vintage and elegant SoTD is L'Air du Temps. Lovely, golden and floral and there's so much of it about that vintage is as cheap as chips. Smile

VintagePerfumista · 23/02/2017 06:31

Yes, it's a houndstooth bottle, (and box) with a black velvet bow. Splash bottle, no barcode, 57cc. Christian Dior, rather than Dior. I'll open it later! The liquid is still pale yellow rather than the darker colour when stuff is on the turn.

MrsC- this is the first time I've been tempted not to even open tbh, possibly because I have a huge bottle of MissD originale, and a couple of fairly old but not ancient miniatures. I won't use any more of the Vent Vert tiny cube bottle until I get another one, but I have the big bottle of that to be going on with!

Dior is great because there are loads of the great sized 10mls around. I have lots of those, Diorella, Diorama, Dior Dior, Dioressence, Miss Dior. Hoping to snatch a reasonably priced Diorling at some point!

MrsCocoa · 23/02/2017 09:19

Double vintage today! Je Reviens (thank you swapee!) on my left arm and Cabochard on my right. I wondered if JR would be a challenging old lady, but in cologne form I'm amazed at how contemporary she feels, perhaps because of the balsamy dry-down (either that or I have lost my olfactory bearings having immersed myself in vintage smells for the last couple of weeks....)?

Inspired to go on the trail of some other blue florals now...Blue Grass?

VintagePerfumista · 23/02/2017 10:12

Get old Blue Grass, the new Blue Grass (about a fiver everywhere) is like water that somebody has squirted a minuscule bit of perfume in.

I opened the Eau de Cologne- and it smells splendid (and immediately reminded me of my Gran, which is odd, because the perfumes I remember her having were In Love, Je Reviens, Ma Griffe etc. However, before I could pop a bit on the postie arrived with an old miniature of Cabochard and the miniature of Chanel 19 which I think is fairly old.

The Cabochard smells magnificent, I thought the 19 had gone off as the top notes are certainly a bit acrid, but I've had it on my hand for half an hour now and it's definitely definitely definitely old formulation there is that something that kicks in after a while that is not in the new stuff. The liquid is definitely yellow as well.

Happy Vintage. Grin

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 23/02/2017 12:30

I'm so jealous of all this lovely vintage perfumerie. Blue grass was another mum favourite.
I've been wearing my Mac Vamp. I smell like a new plimsoll but in a good way.
Never been a fan of modern Avon, but I'm tempted by Timeless, it seems the only one that doesn't smell like all the others. Nice bit of green, but some dirtiness that I love.
Can we talk soap? I'm a big fan, one of my favourites is Savin d Marseilles. Just treated myself to fleur d'oranger and patchouli (which isn't very patchouli iyswim)

LesIncompetents · 23/02/2017 16:27

OhWhat I'm partial to anything fragranced so love a bit of soap too. The bathroom has a bar of Propolis Savon de Marseille at the moment, and a few other bars are stashed in drawers.

Carrying on the vintage theme, has anyone got Soir de Paris? I'm very tempted by the older bottles, it sounds right up my street. In the mood for something powdery and vintage today and so I'm in Houbigant Lutece.

GreenPolishToGo · 23/02/2017 17:05

Ooh, VP, you are on a roll. Well done on the pukka, proper Miss Dior and yellow Chanel 19. And the Cabochard, of course. What super finds. And what a Dior collection.

MrsC my DS, who is 9, likes experimenting with the stash too. Last time we were on a sniffing expedition to Boots he squirted himself very liberally with La Vie Est Belle. He smelt absolutely gorgeous for the rest of the day. I'm glad Je Reviens works for you. On me it was much too austere, so I am far happier with your delicious Up the Apples and Pears, thank you. Smile

New plimsolls smell lovely OhWhat. I really like Lush Vanillary because I can smell a strong rubber note under all the vanilla. And on the subject of soap and washing the Ebay seller who was selling the MMM Untitled samples is now doing a clearance sale on MMM Untitled shower gel and body lotion - 50 ml of each for a tenner plus postage. Shower gel is a necessity, isn't it? So it doesn't count as perfume spending...

SoTD is vintage houndstooth check Miss Dior. I had to go to the dentist so I needed an olfactory security blanket. I kept getting whiffs of powdery comfort to distract me from the poking and prodding.

MrsCocoa · 23/02/2017 19:24

My lovely daughter made the inspired choice of a big bar of 4711 soap for my Christmas present.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 23/02/2017 21:07

Damn you Green. heads off to the bay of e

Judydreamsofhorses · 23/02/2017 21:10

SOTD was Chanel 19. V envious of the vintage juice, vintage!

VintagePerfumista · 24/02/2017 06:06

I shall waft in the Miss Dior today I think.

Soap- another thing I have inherited from my Mum is Posh Soap. She has always had what she terms "good soap". I always have a basket of soaps in the bathroom and choosing which one to open next is all part of the ritual. Favourites have to be everything L'Occitane ever does, (dd came to me the other day and said "Mum have I got any Christmas money left because I'd like to buy the L'Occitane body creams that go with the soaps we've got".

The soap of my childhood was Morny Sandalwood, now the basket has L'occitane, Roger and Gallet, Woods of Windsor, Crabtree and Evelyn etc.

I once had a Rive Gauche soap and a Dune soap, but they are long gone.

MrsCocoa · 24/02/2017 09:40

Vintage - I'm a Dior-free zone right now. Any suggestions as to where to start? (Tend to veer towards resins, woods and leather, rather than high pitched florals).

OCSockOrphanage · 24/02/2017 09:46

DH is persnickety about soap. We moved on from R&G when some of our old favourites disappeared (bring back the Vetiver). Generally now our bathroom has Nesti Dante soap, specifically the Cypress. It's lovely, all green and herbal.

Otherwise, I'm just reading about all your vintage finds and hoping the cold is drying up so I can make the most of an hour in duty free on Sunday afternoon. Anyone smelled anything new and delicious from the usual suspect houses I should be sampling there? (Not sure what the selection is like at Brum.)

Judydreamsofhorses · 24/02/2017 10:02

SOTD is Tauer Lonestar Memories. I got so much rubber from it first thing this morning, but it's mellowed right down now.

LesIncompetents · 24/02/2017 15:12

A little eBay bargain arrived for me yesterday- Cologne of the Missions by Couvent des Minimes, which is apparently a dupe of Guerlain's Spritueuse Double Vanille.

I've never tried the Guerlain, but this is sooo delicious- deep, resinous, a bit boozy and a bit smoky, drying down to a powdery caramel vanilla. I really cannot stop sniffing myself and am now making myself hungry for creme brûlée and custardy things Grin

FrustratedFrugal · 24/02/2017 16:27

I love soap and have a rare gem - Loretta soap from Andy Tauer. I tend to nick intriguing hotel soaps, Aveda is really nice. But I also like simple soaps, castile and aleppo, and even learned to make a batch myself.

I've been out in the countryside and perfume free for a few days. A few moments ago I squirted Shalimar Mexique on my wrist and it smells glorious - citrus meets custard meets chocolate. LesIncompetents your perfume sounds wonderful!

tobee · 24/02/2017 17:55

Just got another lot of tiddly, tiny perfume parlour oils today. To mess around with. All types of perfume styles. I love them all on initial smell. All 12!

My eyes (nose) have been further opened by this thread.

VintagePerfumista · 24/02/2017 19:37

Oops, I appear to have bought 3 more bottles of old juice from the same ebay seller...I bid on the lot last week in case I forgot about it, and have won all 3- an Arpege, a L''Aimant and a Coty that I've never heard of.

MrsCocoa- Diorella might do it for you- I am torn between that and Dioressence as my favourites, depending on mood- Dioressence is grown up and sophisticated grand dame chypre-y while Diorella is grown up but skanky. The fur coat with no knickers side of things. I want to get hold of Diorama because that is apparently leathery. Like hen's teeth though.

Went for Eau du Sud and Jade combo again today because I am knackered and needed something citrussy to wake me up!

What perfume oils did you get Tobee? Tell us all!
