Lovely, friendly perfume lovers thread

MissBattleaxe · 13/07/2016 22:26

This thread continues from our perfumistas thread which is now full. It is a lovely and friendly thread in which we discuss all things perfume-y, and ask for tips and share opinions and SOTDs ( Scent of The Day). Do drop in- we're not cliquey and we all smell nice.

Realised today, when I decided to wear the original CdG scent, that I hadn't put it on my desert island list, so rather than ask for an extra, I am deleting the 11 Semma, sorry though I am.

And I got two free sample sprays by post this morning (from escentual): Miss Dior Absolutely something. Better than I expected TBH, but too much red fruit. And the update on Eau Sauvage, which I love and am reluctant to sample in case it spoils the mystique for me.

OCSockOrphanage · 05/10/2016 20:45

I mean, I love the original Eau Sauvage, obviously. Small distinctions seem to matter to perfumistas.

BaronessBomburst · 06/10/2016 00:27

Was your Apres l'Ondee from eBay ThenLater ?
Because I've been watching that decant for ages but she's pulled the listing.

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 06/10/2016 06:36

No,B, I have discovered Etsy decants!!! (cheaper generally than ebay and more selection-postage to here better too as sellers don't seem to automatically click that 'very expensive international postage' button that ebayers use!)I have checked her listings and she doesn't have l'HB so it must be Al'O. Reading up on the 2, there do seem to be a few crossover ingredients, so it must be my nose getting confused. I was surprised at the powdery old lady feel to it, I expected, from the name, something much sharper.
Now Bel Respiro, in its first minutes has that lovely tangy kick that Chanel 19 old style used to have, and Aromatics Elixir still does. Lovely. Not FB lovely, unlike the Diorella!

I tend to hang out on Italian and German ebay for perfume. You get some magnificent finds once you've waded through the pink shite. Grin

user1471503992 · 06/10/2016 08:48

Thanks Frugal! I am noting everyone's desert island perfumes as a new list for sampling!

BaronessBomburst · 06/10/2016 09:10

Do you ever hang out on French eBay, Dark?
Now they're a weird bunch, and label everything as for collectors only. Seemed to be obsessed with empty bottles too.
BTW German eBay is generally fab for lego collectors items, and Canadian eBay for designer stuff as no one else in the world ever checks it. Once got some vintage Manolos for £29. The six weeks it took to ship (yes, they came by boat; I went for the economy option) nearly killed me.

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 06/10/2016 09:39

Ooooh, Canadian ebay you say.....

German ebay excellent for Playmobil too! I am thankfully now beyond the Christmas Playmobilfest with dd, but bought loads of second hand for her in the past, and will never forget the "modern house" which came with each room separately sealed in little bags. And not a rivet was missing.

I got the Vent Vert from ebay.fr. There seems to be a lot of perfume going on ebay.es, but I don't trust a lot of the sellers, they seem to have too much good stuff, all vintage, that they are getting rid of. On ebay.it I found both the Dioressence and Diorella, buy-it-nows and clearly fab old stuff found in granny's drawer.

OCSockOrphanage · 06/10/2016 15:47

The batch of samples bought from Heeley arrived this morning! Quick sniffs of Cardinal (incense, incense, more incense which is new to me, but I think I like); St Clements (oranges and lemons obviously, and not much lasting power on a single spritz but very true citrus), and Hippie Rose, which focuses on rose, patchouli and saffron. Loved the top notes, and now it's settled down, there's loads of warm sweetness, but no sugar. It's autumn comfort, and perfect for a chill easterly wind under a bright sky.

Interested to try the others (Agarwood and Bubblegum Chic) later on or tomorrow.

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 06/10/2016 16:01

I have, and love Hippie Rose. You must like the Chanel 22 thingy if you like the incense waft!

SotD Chanel 19. Power perfume dressing for handing in my job application for my job. Grrr. The job I have been doing for 4 years. Rant rant.

OCSockOrphanage · 06/10/2016 16:38

ThenLater, I've never smelled Chanel 22, so didn't know that it was an incense Blush.

What I have learned since my last post is that I really, really hate jasmine with tuberose. Tuberose I like in some scents (JHaG use lots) so am reconciled to it though it will never (brave word, never) be a favourite, but with strong jasmine sambac over white musk... non! Bubblegum Chic was an instant scrubber. Just yuck. Cannot quite believe I was stupid enough to choose it. Does anyone like the sound of it? Free dog seeks loving home.

I hope your job application is a triumph, and that your managers see the error of their ways PDQ. And give you a rise!

BaronessBomburst · 06/10/2016 23:37

SOTD was Phi, a rose Kandahar by Tauer.
Only it wasn't, because I absolutely hate it. Couldn't wash it off quick enough. I'm so glad I only sprayed my wrists.
I've been checking Markplaats, which is the Dutch eBay equivalent, and it's full of Guerlain Une Robe Noir. Why is everyone getting rid of it? Is it that bad? Confused

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 07/10/2016 07:58

I think it's a bit "ordinary", like newer Hermes and Chance for Chanel and all those Dior ones that even if they smelled divine just thingy strutting around purrrrrrring Diooooooorrrrrrrrrrrr is enough to make me hate. Grin

OCSockOrphanage · 07/10/2016 09:48

So yesterday was international scrubbers day!

Most new releases are ordinary these days, but that's perhaps because there are so many of them, and too many are formulated by industrial chemical companies to a celebrity or marketing brief instead of perfumers. Andy Tauer is a chemist but he's not driven by a desire to please everyone; his fragrances divide opinion, as the Baroness has just remarked.

Badders123 · 07/10/2016 11:03

Hmmm...I tried le petit robe noire and really wanted to love it but too much cherry for me
I'm so glad someone mentioned nahema! I'd forgotten that one!

AnotherPinkiePieStory · 07/10/2016 12:38

Thanks missbattleaxe it was so lovely to think back. It turns out I've worn a lot of perfumes in my nearly 4 decades. I always bin old bottles and now I'm not sure I will as how fab to smell back in time.
Some lovely unusual ones listed here which I'm going to look out for esp 22 and tauer. So many lovely smells in the world. I think it's our mission to list them!
And good luck for your own job thenlater. Arghhhh

Thanks so much for you guys who recommended I 've just done an order on perfume parlour. I'm also on the thread using up my stash of beauty products so I'm not sure these are compatible.
I'm loving trying so many samples but do you guys think a signature scent exists? Are you all looking for the holy grail?

OneNightTimeMenaceStrikesBack · 07/10/2016 12:43

OCSock if the bubblegum is still available, i would love to try it. not to worry if someones already asked though. I just love love tuberose!

SOTD is an old love of mine, Ghost Deep Night. Takes me right back to pregnancy and the twins being born. Is topped wearing it when DD passed away but in recent years have rediscovered my love for it. I don't wear it all the time but when i do, i really enjoy it

Cockblocktopus · 07/10/2016 14:24

One Night Flowers I'm sorry about your DD.

My favourite scents are...
Jo Malone Wood Sage and sea salt
Jo Malone Bluebell
Jo Malone Earl Grey and Cucumber
Chanel 19
Chanel no 5
Chanel Sycomore
Bvlgari au the rouge
Tom Ford plum Japonais
Tom Ford Tabac Vanille
L'occitaine Rose et Reine

Sorry for spelling errors Blush

I've realised writing my list that I've tried so, so few perfumes mostly because for years I never found perfumes that I liked. And when I did find a perfume I liked I tended to stick to that house to find something else.

So it's not avery exciting list Blush

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 07/10/2016 14:31

Flowers OneNight.

I think signatures can and do exist, but I think they change. I am awed (or possibly shocked!) by women who just wear one fragrance all their lives when there is so much out there to try. The colleague who told me she has only ever worn Aromatics Elixir for example (and my goodness she smells fabulous) and that she feels it would just be too weird to try anything else.

I have had signatures, definitely. Obsession was probably the predominant one, the one that stayed mine for longest.

I am in Tweed today. There is something a bit interesting poo-y about it at a certain point Grin I have also just spent an hour mooching around on YesterdaysPerfume and adding things to my ebay searches. I really shouldn't.

OneNightTimeMenaceStrikesBack · 07/10/2016 14:38

thank you both

I don't think i can really pick too many favourites, i jump from perfume to perfume and don't stick to particular houses either. I pretty much wear something different at least every day if not a couple of times a day. Coco and Coco Mademoiselle are two that absolutely love and i try to always have some of each of them but otherwise, i'm game to try anything, even if it ends up being a scrubber for me

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 07/10/2016 15:21

Oh dear. I appear to have just bought 50ml of Diorissimo.

I. Must. Be. Stopped.

Badders123 · 07/10/2016 17:09

My signature scent was def obsession too! Smile

SlinkyVagabond · 07/10/2016 17:15

For Miller Harris and Serge Lutyens fans, I was having a mooch on tk maxx online, they have loads, the mh is about 30 the sl about 50. Still too rich for my blood.
I've got the Petit Robe Noire. Present from dh, who, bless him, just thinks any Guerlain is ok. It's ok, a bit sweet, got to be in the right mood.

MissBattleaxe · 07/10/2016 17:50

Aha! I think I can now ask for a SL FB for Christmas! My first ever!

I have to say i was underwhelmed by the whole La petite Robe Noire range. I found it meh and was quite discouraged by the number of flankers. I just feel that none of them are anything special and in a blind test I would never have said they were Guerlain.
