I know it might seem like we've nothing left to say but I'm sure we have :)

I have to tell you: Seville a l'Aube is on the TK Maxx website for half price - lots of other L'Artisan perfumes but that one is very special and I wore nothing else all summer!

SOTD: Cuir de Russie. Like a fuzzy hug with vague undertones of marauding Cossacks from the 19th century.

I've a sample of Encre Noire pour Elle too, and I was underwhelmed. The real EN is a cheaper version of Sycomore, and great when you want a hit of vetiver.

cressetmama · 11/12/2015 17:35

Rattlebag, TKMaxx had the Travalo spray and roll on bottles that you fill from the spray nozzle last week. I got two, for presents obv...

So you're not a taker for the EN pour Elle, Frugal! I was so disappointed when it arrived that it was the female juice; there was no indication.

.

MrsCocoa · 11/12/2015 23:04

SotD is Golden Chypre, Grossmith. I tried an old sample - it has delivered a festive dose of nutmeg and orange.

Encre Noire: what's the deal - it gets a lot of attention on Basenotes/Fragrantica?

FrustratedFrugal · 12/12/2015 09:58

I think Encre Noire pour Elle would be an excellent fit for someone who likes slightly higher-pitched floral perfumes, freesia, gardenia, magnolia and lily type (all notes that I stuggle with). My basic preferences are midrange and deep notes, orientals, chypres, and woody scents, so I struggle with certain floral notes.

I like the Iso E Super-laced vetiver in Sycomore and Encre Noire, but it is a dominant note, and stereotypically masculine, so it is not an everyday thing for me.

It's a dreary cold day, so I am wearing one of my comfort scents - Antaeus from Chanel.

MrsCocoa · 12/12/2015 12:07

Thanks Frugal. With you on most of those floral notes. Recently noticed though that I get drawn to peach (despite myself!). Have a bottle of Paris 1948 (4160 Tuesdays) which is SotD. They list this as a chypre, but on me I need to turn up the bass, usually by layering with Empreinte. And happily the 4160 fragrance takes the old lady edge off things.

Is it the presence of aldehydes that make things smell dated?

cressetmama · 12/12/2015 12:51

I bought the Encre Noir (a tester bottle IIRC but with the cap) from an outfit in NY after reading the notes on Now Smell This and, having adored FM Vetiver Extraordinaire as a Les Senteurs sample, decided it would do the job! It has reproached me from the back of my bathroom cupboards ever since. My tends generally are not dissimilar to Frugal and give florals and fruity notes a wide berth.

SoTD is JHAG Gentlewoman, which is neroli, almond and musk. The neroli lifts the spirits on a dank damp day, and the almond is comforting. I'm virutally anosmic to musk, so I may reek, but no one has mentioned it yet.

cressetmama · 12/12/2015 12:52

Why can't I type this morning? There's no excuse. My tastes.. virtually...

getoffthattabletnow · 12/12/2015 13:46

I love heady floral notes.I seem to be the complete opposite of most perfumistas on this thread,so suspect i would enjoy the Encre Noir.
I used to think Aldehydes smelt 'old' and fusty too Mrs Cocoa but I think used right they add a sparkle and freshness to a perfume. However i really dislike the Aldehydes used characteristically in the Chanel perfumes.
Wearing E Coudray's Musc et Freesia
The Freesia topnote is to die for, then the perfume fades away to basically .........nothing .12 sprays later I can sense a delicate floral musk.Apparently its a remake of an original perfume.....
Yesterday Van Cleef And Arpels California Reverie sprayed with abandon.Glorious California orange blossom on a ,dank ,cold, miserable Winters day.

FrustratedFrugal · 12/12/2015 15:18

There is at least one aldehydic perfume that is stark and austere, Le Labo's discontinued Dallas exclusive, Aldehyde 44. I originally disliked aldehydes, but my tastes have changed. I love Véga, Chanel No. 5, Tauer's Miriam. There is a complexity in them that is intriguing. In itself, the odd-number aldehydes have ab unpleasant smell, like snuffed candle or bad breath or ear wax, but in combination with other things they smell intriguing.

schmalex · 12/12/2015 15:39

I tried Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille and Jo Malone Pomegranate Noir yesterday.

Pomegranate Noir was lovely to start with, but became horribly clove-y and medicinal on my skin after not too long. It was also really long lasting so I had to keep smelling it all day...

I only tried the Tom Ford on a blotter. I do like it, but I'm not sure if the vanilla note is a bit sweet. I might have to try it again.

SoTD is Lipstick Rose again. I might have to get a full bottle.

ToysDontWorkNoMore · 12/12/2015 16:24

Schmalex: if you do get a full bottle, I will beg you for a decant or two. Will pay, of course. Just cannot in any way justify paying for a whole bottle atm.. Sad

ToysDontWorkNoMore · 12/12/2015 16:31

Sotd: Tuscany per Donna. Warm and comforting. Very retro. I love the early 90s esthetic in both clothes and perfume.. Dh just came to the room and sniffed the air and honed in on me. Funnily this almost always never happens..

getoffthattabletnow · 12/12/2015 16:38

Schmalex/Toys I would do a split of Lipstick Rose.A 10 ml travel vial set of 3 can be purchased for less money than one 10 ml on its own from a UK online store.I will investigate the pricing if anyone's interested.I'm just coming to the end of mine and I really don't want to buy a big bottle.

ToysDontWorkNoMore · 12/12/2015 17:35

Cool, thanks, getoff!

MissBattleaxe · 12/12/2015 20:49

My favourite aldehyde is First by Van Cleef and Arpels. It just blooms the longer I wear it. I love it. I'm hoping DH will get me some.

I also love Noontide Petals and Miriam (hello Frugal!). Funnily enough I admire Chanel No 5 but I dislike it. I prefer No 5 Eau Premiere, but Chanel No 5 sort of leaves me cold. It smells like old gone off foundation from a stale make up bag.

CointreauVersial · 12/12/2015 21:52

I was out at a party last night, and dug out my Oud Isphahan (still ekeing out the decant sent to me by Frugal some time ago.....). Gorgeous honeyed rose and oud - a little goes a very long way. DS told me I smelled nice, which never happens!

I had an email to say that L'Artisan Parfumeur have 20% off everything this weekend (if anyone is after a FB of anything). I somehow managed to land on a French web page, which was then translated into English by my tablet....but it translated the fragrance names too. Somehow, Rose Thief, Troubled Saffron, Hell Passage and Bad Wolf didn't sound quite as enticing....Grin

ToysDontWorkNoMore · 12/12/2015 21:57

Troubled Saffron Grin

CreviceImp · 12/12/2015 22:20

My new favourite is Estée Lauder Modern Muse Chic.

Not Modern Muse-that is boring.

I also have a bit of a thing for Perris Monte Carlo Perfume ambre Gris and bois de oud. Both pretty in your face.

MrsCocoa · 13/12/2015 14:23

SotD: Fleurs de Sel, Miller Harris. This was a stand-out favourite from a box of samples. Then recently spotted it as part of a Miller Harris trio of wood-based fragrances at a knock-down price, at, yes, TK Maxx. (Am not buying a single item of new clothing for Christmas this year in an attempt to off-set expenditure on smells...).

MissBattleaxe · 13/12/2015 16:44

SOTD: 4160 Tuesdays Tart's Knicker drawer. Powdery ambery floral. Very ladylike.

schmalex · 13/12/2015 19:48

Ooh yes toys & getoff, I would definitely be up for a split!

I also LOVE the sound of Tart's Knicker Drawer.

CointreauVersial · 13/12/2015 19:49

SOTD - L'Artisan Tea for Two. I have a bit of a cold, and it was the perfect comfort scent.

cressetmama · 14/12/2015 10:01

Morning all! Last week of term and I must get the Christmas tree today. SoTD is Jicky, which doesn't strike me as quite right.

Your scent picks for this task?

getoffthattabletnow · 14/12/2015 10:53

DSquared She Wood Velvet Woods - forest glade with the Scent of Pine and precious Woods with violets.
Sotd is California Reverie from my new bottle. The only trouble is my sample is much better in longevity terms. My bottle was manufactured in 2015 and is probably conforming to modern guidelines.

cressetmama · 14/12/2015 11:10

I think it could like that, GetOff. Sounds very suitable, but I don't suppose our small town could run to a tester bottle!
