Don't cut off labels immediately....sleep on a purchase

Fedupnagging · 03/07/2015 22:17

Yep, I'd agree with that Dry.

Also, 'just because it's on trend doesn't mean you need to wear it' if it doesn't suit you

shopafrolic · 03/07/2015 22:17

Lib sending you a huge Voguette hug
Like that one Dry. To reverse it I'd also say if you haven't cut the tags off in a week then send it back....

OneLittleLady · 03/07/2015 22:32

ooh, i can't do short shorts. my thighs, my god my thighs. plus i wouldn't have the confidence. also, thighs rubbing together

hope your weekend is an improvement on the last few days lib

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 03/07/2015 22:38

Hugs lib (and Wine - or beer - of course)

I don't necessarily agree with the "don't keep it if you don't immediately love it" rule Shock BUT only for basics/workwear. I've bought many things which I've thought "ok this is pretty good, it'll do fine" about, that have gone on to be worn so much. However, I suppose this is about as good as it gets for boring necessities and so is probably the equivalent of "I love it".

Today I had the idea of making a spreadsheet (!) for potential purchases with a checklist of criteria like "make 5 outfits that include it" that ought to be satisfied before I buy Grin
But it would probably be pointless, as I impulse buy as much as anyone!

Drywhiteplease · 03/07/2015 22:47

Ok, so to summarise:

  1. Always buy online so you can return
2.never buy the same thing in multiple colours, youll never love it as much 3.spend on classics not on short lived trends
  1. If you don't love it immediately don't keep it
  2. Does it go with at least 3 items in your wardrobe?
  3. Pin it, watch it
  4. Don't cut off the labels immediately, sleep on it
  5. Just because it's on trend doesn't mean you need to wear it

Any more?

OneLittleLady · 03/07/2015 23:20

black is not always the answer and just because it fits, it doesn't mean it looks good/right

shopafrolic · 04/07/2015 00:41

Big loud scary thunderstorm here Sad

Stokey · 04/07/2015 08:16

That woke me too Shop, it's was pretty spectacular. I was running round the house frantically closing windows at 12.30 when Dh sloped in. He had managed to get a cab but had only gone out in a linen shirt so was pretty damp.

Yy to if it fits, it's not necessarily right One. This is one I'm guilty of.

The rule I've learnt this year: Shop for the lifestyle you have, not the one you had/aspire to. I have to rein in impractical shoes and pencil skirts as they don't fit my current SAHM reality.

Breaking MNV rule 2... I'd be tempted by the blue and white striped version of "our" dress Linus, I only saw the white with blue but it didn't do much for me colour wise.

Hope you're feeling better today Lib. We're barbie-ing too. I think a fox has punctured the luxury paddling pool DH bought last week, grrr. Will be spending the morning searching for the hole.

Drywhiteplease · 04/07/2015 08:53

I love my multiple purchases equally. I do think though that the original is always the one that gave you the buzz.

Big storm here today, cooler but hoping the sun will come through.

Here's another rule I woke up with:

Save up an buy the original, a compromise will all ways be a compromise.

I have done this a lot .

So.....

  1. If it fits, it's not necessarily right
10. Buy for the lifestyle you have now.

Stokey I'm so guilty of that. I adore dressing up dresses and am always drawn to dress/heel combos but don't get many opportunities to dress up.

libertychick · 04/07/2015 09:13

Feeling better this morning despite already getting 3 emails about the dramas that are going on DH and I sat drinking and watching the lightening and talking about future plans - was lovely!

Totally agree with buying for the life you have stokey. I have the opposite problem. I love casual clothes so have loads of casual stuff and not enough work clothes.

MyVegasBaby · 04/07/2015 09:17

Morning, some good tips here, some I need to pay more attention to!
Have ordered these to collect today, bought instead of the black patent gigis that I can't find in my size at a price I want to pay plus I've had a Giftcard kicking around since Christmas so they only cost £10. BUT they are a compromise so I need to be sure they are right. I've worn my silver ballet pumps I bought a few months ago so much that I thought these would be a good buy. sandals.
Also bought this in the Zara sale yesterday which is lovely and the colour very good for me cobalt top along with a black dress with a similar top which I can't find online, again really nice and I'll wear out tonight. And finally (and I only popped in for a browse in my lunch hour!!) this beach bag beach bag it's a brighter colour IRL and I liked the fact it has a little bag inside that clips in that you can put your phone and small things in so they don't get lost in the bottom and are easy to grap if you go to the bar or the loo etc.
Have a fab holiday shop, very jealous!
Sorry to hear about your cat One.
Sorry to hear you've had s rubbish couple of days Lib I can so relate to that.
Dry I have quite a few old favourites, quite a lot of dressy things that don't get worn very much and a few pairs of shoes and sandals that only come out for the summer.
Enjoy your Saturday's everyone!

Topazandpearl · 04/07/2015 10:21

Hope you get to relax and recharge Lib and try to shut of the emails.

This weekend is the anniversary of the first MU I went to, another sunny day as I remember. I wish I could come to the next one but was meant to be going with DH and DD to hand over her uni accommodation, but that plan has also gone awry. DM will be going into hospital for a day or two so I will be going to look after DF and her for a few days.

I try to keep the style rules but I also have three ravello tops. I like them all, but one is my favourite.

Another one:

Don't keep it because it will fit when I lose a few pounds. (Eyeing the Boden skirt that is just a bit too snug).

I slept through the thunderstorm last night. It is still hot and humid here so I am wearing denim bf shorts and a white tee with tiny sparkles on it, along with black Arizona birkies.

Have a lovely holiday shop and have a lovely weekend everyone.

Drywhiteplease · 04/07/2015 10:47

Topaz totally agree, keeping stuff for when you lose weight is downright depressing !

And..... beware of sales !

MarshaBrady · 04/07/2015 11:41

Yes and never buy anything go that is too small as weight loss incentive. Your body knows you have done this and will make things harder just because.

I'm a reverse on the doubles

  • if you love something and it is kaput it is fine to replace and far better than diverging to something you don't love as much just for difference.

Lib big hug lovely, hope you have a wonderful weekend and next week is less stressful.

Shop have an ace time, sure you will.

One what a shame about the MU, poor onecat

QueenCardigan · 04/07/2015 12:15

Morning. Glad you're feeling happier lib. Step away from the emails.
No thunderstorms here and it's sunny again.

I don't get the online and return rule? Are there some shops which don't allow returns?
I'm realising that I'm spending more on accessories and less on clothes and I'm becoming more fussy about good quality handbags and shoes (what have you done to me??)

BrandyAlexander · 04/07/2015 12:39

Afternoon!! Long time! Sat in my garden wearing a Desigual tee shirt and Ann Taylor white chino shorts. Getting ready to go to pils for the afternoon.

Looking at all the style rules people have listed I think I probably follow most of them though I do have a number of things in different colours. Eg LKB Ariella dress I own in 4 colours. Me&Em ruched dress I own in 3 colours and the M&S perfect jacket I discovered, I bought in navy and black.Grin

I would say the most important style rule is to dress for your current body shape and lifestyle as opposed to anyone else's.

Oh and if you don't have a good reason for not having worn something that year, then get rid.

Sorry to hear about your cat One.Thanks

Lib hope you're okay hon.Thanks

Have a great holiday ShopSmile

Topaz sorry to hear about your dm.Thanks

QueenC I have corrupted you!!!!Grin

MyVegasBaby · 04/07/2015 12:51

Beware of the sales, that would be me in Zara yesterday then! Although very pleased with my haul, wearing the top already today and will be wearing the dress tonight so a good sign!

Fedupnagging · 04/07/2015 13:24

Spectacular storm here too last night - apparently. I slept through it all. might have had something to do with the bottle of wine I drank Blush

Topaz last year was my first MU too - hadn't realised it was exactly a year today. Hope your dm is ok.

Yes to buying/dressing for the lifestyle you currently have - a rule I have only recently embraced.

Sorry to hear about Onecat

Have a fab holiday Shop

It is very hot here today but luckily there is a breeze. Am currently wearing a stripey uniqlo dress and pondering what to wear later - we are going to a picnic and concert in a forest.

Fedupnagging · 04/07/2015 13:38

Have had this dress for a few years but love it (flowery clothes are a bit out of my comfort zone) so have decided this is what I will wear - with gigi's and a blanket just in case the weather breaks!

bettykt · 04/07/2015 17:58

Am loving the rules, my brain is too frazzled to think of any more. I love my black and navy Boden shorts equally. Wink

Shop have a great holiday

One hope your cat is on the mend

Scorchio here today, lovely, drinking Wine in the garden, bliss.

OneLittleLady · 04/07/2015 18:27

just had the most delicious salad: warm pasta with onions, peppers and mushrooms in a philadelphia with vine tomatoes sauce mixed with fresh mixed salad leaves, baby spinach leaves, avocado and baby plum tomatoes. it was so so good
