Unilateral decision... No space for consultation. Call me Dave...

Good luck addle, hope everything falls into place.

Herbs, your Dad sounds amazing and I'm so sorry he is fading. May I make a suggestion? While he still has his stories to tell, can you turn the voice memo on your phone on and record him? I wish I had done it with my dad and mum - Da did it with my grandfather, got him to talk about WWI experiences into a reel to reel in 1968. Ds1 and I just listened to them recently for a school project and it was wonderful to be able to introduce them to each other, so to speak. I did record my aunt and I chatting about family before she died and I'm v pleased I did, she was already quite forgetful, but I found out a few things that I hadn't known before. I know that when you are in the throes of looking after someone, there is so much sadness and frustration that it seems impossible to do anything other than make them a cup of tea, but sometimes doing something different can be a lift. Interesting that he's more chatty when your mum's not about - there's a long term relationship at work Grin .

beachyhead · 31/05/2015 22:54

That's a lovely idea, Wilbur. I might do that with ddad Smile

cremolafoam · 31/05/2015 23:07

There is a programme on C4 this week about helping those with dementia to remember their old selves; it's called Dementiaville

Addle sending some steel to your core! And Wine obviously.

MollyAir · 31/05/2015 23:15

Oh, yes, CV - iirc StropDog is one of the most obedient dogs in the universe, like MollyDog. Would not put a foot wrong. Especially when scaling a Christmas Tree for chocolate.

addle · 31/05/2015 23:20

thanks Crem and Wilbur

Herbs, just to second Wilbur's suggestion to record your DDad. I did it a bit with mine and wish I'd done it much more - just using the record facility on my laptop. I chose subjects that weren't obviously emotional in case I brought up difficult feelings and I think he enjoyed talking about the past in a slightly structured way. The convos never lasted very long but they are precious.

Blackduck · 01/06/2015 07:02

Addle much strength for work related (and other stuff).
At the minute ddogs only talent is producing the most noxious farts (and sleeping)

I took my aborted dinner round to friend on the grounds it had to be eaten and dp wouldn't want to face it three days running - she looked awful - turns out she has a kidney infection (ouch) but husband and kids polished off pork belly, chorizo and chickpea stew.....

Here watching 1864 - anyone else? All very grim but loving Guardian blog of it Grin

Hope it goes alright Addle.House guests and exams Hmm

Can't handle all the dementia talk…DDad did very well going to a family wedding yesterday. And the had a major accident in the car going home, which at 8.30 last night, DM was still trying to deal with. I can't persuade her to throw certain thing away instead of trying to wash them.

I escaped the house this morning to a humdinger of a sign lesson…really put through my paces…DS2 has papers all over the feckin' house and I have to keep my mouth shut because he's revising. Roll on tomorrow afternoon when it'll all be over at least temporarily.

Tilly can I see the dresses?…love a new frock, me.

Rosebag · 01/06/2015 12:35

ps still on the bikini thread and now the Sam Cam/Jools Oliver exercise thread which has morphed into a cat flight over leaving kids with nannies or some such thing. I have only been brave enough to post once but MI is valiantly speaking up for moderation and good sense.

Why are posters so bloody angry about it all? Why is everyone (except us) being so horrible? What is the point of declaring that we should all let everything hang out in a bikini regardless of what anyone says or thinks, but in the same breath telling us that we look out of place in anything but? Confused

Rosebag · 01/06/2015 12:36

not a sign lesson singing

motherinferior · 01/06/2015 12:53

Addle and BD, much strength. As to all exam-endurers.

DSis has posted on FB to the effect that so far rediscovering her (and my) Danish roots in 1864 seems to involve running around, screaming and saying oh f*ck a lot Grin.

Yep, Rose, the 'oh you just need to make time' argument doesn't really wash when one is exhaustedly beset by work/kids/NOT ENOUGH SLEEP. Maybe it's easier to say that when you're out of the toddler years and can bog off to leave them to their own devices?

motherinferior · 01/06/2015 12:57

Oh and now I'm back on the main computer this is where we're not staying...

herbaceous · 01/06/2015 13:10
Shock

Yes

Grin
CointreauVersial · 01/06/2015 13:15

OMG, MI, I thought you were exaggerating. Shock

That has to be the worst set of reviews I've seen in a long time.

lalsy · 01/06/2015 13:15

Rose, I agree about people being horrible, and aggressive too. Lots of people seem to take things so personally and then repeat themselves and each other ad infinitum. God forbid a new opinion - or even actual fact - should shed light on anything.

MI, Shock. They read like parodies. I doubt naming and shaming will help as they clearly rely on guests who don't access internet reviews. Book somewhere nice and sod it.

bigTillyMint · 01/06/2015 13:42

Rose, have FB messaged the pics.

MI, Shock and Grin Worse than Fawlty Towers - don't blame you for not wanting to go there.

DD said History went badly - not sure she wrote enough or the right thingSad History is her favourite subject and she wants to do it at A'level so I hope she's just worrying, but I feel a bit sick.

motherinferior · 01/06/2015 13:52

CV, me, exaggerate? Moi???? Grin I know. It's hilariously terrible. DP found the ones on its own site - own site - which are equally bad.

I think we're just going to get up early and leave - we have a couple of things we're invited to the previous night but may not manage to go as I will almost certainly drink too much- and just bog off at the crack of dawn. There are some lovely places but they're either booked-up or vv pricey.

Rosebag · 01/06/2015 14:08

Dear lord, MI it sounds like a homeless bed and breakfast run by the local Madame. Someone need to tell trading standards. That was a narrow escape!

lalsy thanks. Is it just me or have things got worse on MN recently in terms of rudeness and posters being either unkind or aggressive? Maybe I've been on the Crepey thread so much that I just haven't noticed what's going on, on other threads. It's just that we manage to be nice to one another even though we may have different priorities and opinions. There are some right nut jobs out there. So glad I found you, Crepeys. You make my day better.

tilly have replied on messenger. Sorry about DDs history. I suspect she's done a lot better than she thinks. It's gone now, though. Onward to the next one, eh. DS woke up so low about the impending music paper. Yesterday he was up beat about it having spent hours in FaceTime revising with a friend. They're all over the place, aren't they.

lalsy · 01/06/2015 14:35

Rose, I think MN is much bigger and more mainstream, and attracts angry people as such sites do. There is also a lot to read and people don't bother before saying "of course it is reasonable for your 6yo pfb never to get a new reading book you helicopter all-guns-blazing pushy parent, you are pushing teachers out of the profession in droves" - all rage and stereotyping, not to mention cliches. I agree about this thread Grin.

BTM, I am no dress expert but did see what strange concoctions they wore wore when dd did it - if you want to send me the pics do. Very hard to know about subjects like history I think, and also easy to ignore the low-hanging fruit?. ds went off to write about the Cold War having been awake much of the night thinking about it, so not looking forward to him getting home - plenty of acronyms to muddle up there!

hattymattie · 01/06/2015 14:43

That B&B looks scaryShock a narrow escape MI.

Rose I daren't post on other boards for fear I might be inappropriately flippant.

DD2 asked me to read her History essay. I think she writes French sentences in English and it doesn't make sense - never mind why the US pursued a policy of detente after the cold war.Confused. Also she seems to have written everything about detente except that it was a good idea otherwise we might have been blown to bits. Obviously a post cold war child who missed all the films like Threads etc.

Continuing good luck to the exam sitters.

herbaceous · 01/06/2015 14:44

Stropps! Stroppy!

I just remembered that a few pages ago, a propos of Lyme Regis, you suggest a micro meet-up. In my head I thought 'ooh how nice', but didn't seem to transfer that to the internet. But yes - that would be lovely! I'm sure I could win round DP's Hmm face.

Maybe at the cafe at the nice beach. Hive thingumy is it?

herbaceous · 01/06/2015 14:45

Gah. Stropps. Not Stroppy. Damned autocorrect.

hattymattie · 01/06/2015 14:45

Ohhh x post Lalsy- obviously the Cold War is on trend.

lalsy · 01/06/2015 15:01

Hatty Grin. Good thing to study for that reason, I think, if you can keep your SALTs and your IFNs and your HSBCs separate....

hattymattie · 01/06/2015 15:26

LalsyGrin. I did tell her she needs to write the acronym out in full the first time.Smile
