This space is for anyone who wants to talk about perfumes - ask for recommendations, tell us which scent you are wearing today (=SOTD), list your favorites...

Feeling lucky this weekend, DH decided to take DD to see the Lego movie today so managed to sneak in a quick trip to the shops. Sniffed the new Valentino for men fragrance, very nice. Tried the atelier Cologne Vetiver Fatal on my skin this time, lovely. I can see this going on the wish list for spring, must get a sample ordered!

SOTD was Portrait of a Lady, really long lasting, very feminine, I usually save this for evening but was feeling ladylike today as I was bra shopping and wanted to smell feminine.

Alternate sleet showers and bright spring sunshine here, so SOTD is Trumper's Ajaccio Violets . Nearly at end of sample. It's very, very, very pretty but rather too sweet for me.

Feeling a bit bleurgh today, there seems to be a stomach bug going round. I started off with Un Bois Vanille, which made me feel worse so I sprayed Les Senteurs Gourmandes Figue Sauvage over the top, not much better! Might have to go and wash them off...

Fuzz Knize 10 is ruined forever for me because DD1 vomited all over me when I was testing it. So go fragrance-free for a while... I know it's hard Wink
Wearing LTDUF again - I think this discontinued gem from Nicolai needs its own acronym.. POTL I think is pretty established already. Soon our messages will be too cryptic for anyone...

Everyone is wearing fantastic stuff! Imagine what it would smell like if we all gathered in one room - gentle violets, killer tuberose, heavy hitting rose oud, jammy figs, rotting narcissi, rooty vetiver, zingy ginger, subtle molecules... Just great, I think! Grin

SOTD is Lolita Lempicka. It reminds me so much of my late Mum, it's the first perfume she bought for me so is very special to me. It opens with a lot of licorice but fades down to a slighty spicy floral on me. So pretty, I just love it and the bottle is so very pretty too

I've gone back to the 80s SOTD Dune, first perfume I ever bought I think (not original sadly).

Anyone tried the Jo Malone Rain fragrances? Was just in HOF & sprayed a couple, London Rain was nice & fresh but doesn't seem to have lasted long.

Also sprayed her Velvet Rose & Oud (just on card - Dune would drown out anything else) which thought was much fuller.

Have anointed myself with various 4160 Tuesdays perfumes.Am still sweaty from the gym so will shower and then try just one.Intrigued by Lady Rose Lion though - the blurb says it smells almost identical to a famous chypre perfume.A very quick perusal through Fragantica suggests similar elements to Mitsouko.

I've ordered samples of the 4 JM Rain fragrances from STC. It's put me off though that they don't come in the 30 ml size - £82 a bottle is a lot.I'm wearing Molecule 1 for the 2nd day & my friend I met today told me how fantastic I smelt when I arrived! maybe it does work on me. I think I'm going to keep going with it for a few more days & see if I get any strangers crossing the road to offer me flowers!

Another frag that gets a lot of feedback from strangers is Musc Ravageur!

You all seem to know SO much about perfume.
I was wondering if you could tell me if there's a perfume that smells like freesias do? I've searched in vain for years, tried many that were called freesia or said they had freesia as a note only to be disappointed.

Report
FrugalFashionista · 03/03/2014 19:32

Sure, Antonia's Flowers (our nanny wears this) and Ofresia (if you are lucky, you can get both from Space NK). Luca Turin says that the smell of freesia is 90% linalool and so lavender-violet perfumes get close too.

Housewife, I read your post about molecule 1 and felt the same. I have never had anyone comment and whilst I LOVE it I can rarely smell it in myself. However a colleague today came in my room and said she loved it and had to know what it was. Strange.

I also love the jm rain, the black cedarwood mmmm but Im Sad there are no small sizes. I want creed Virgin island more than I want that. And I can't afford that either!

Someone asked about the Tuesday perfumes. I really like my samples, they are different to anything else I've tried. I read the pancake and sunshine one smelt of Sundays (maybe on their website) so I rather predictably wear it on Sundays so now it does Smile I'm crap at describing smells but it's very cosy and warm. I so want to try lazy Sunday mornings - has anyone tried it? Has anyone found somewhere to get a sample?

Today I am wearing portofino. Sample as it is ouchy priced.

Just cracked recently and bought Serge Lutens 'Daim Blond', wore for first day back at work after mat leave. No comments but made me feel fantastic. Not sure if it has much sillage but I think it smells lovely.

Foxinorangesocks I've tried it today. It smells like a tropical beach to me with a a whiff of Ozone, pungent trees,Jasmine scrambling nearby somewhere, heat and suntan lotion. And a pancake stall somewhere ( maybe a Malaysian Roti Chani(banana) stall setting up for the evening. But maybe its just I'm far more familiar with Malaysian beaches than UK beaches.I do agree these perfumes are quite different to most modern offerings - they smell vintage and very unusual.

I have just brought my first new perfume in years and I feel like a cat in catnip - I just want to ROLL in it.

Santal by Fragonard

Soft, woody, layered, different every whiff, sits on me gently yet firmly. I have enjoyed Fragonard perfumes for years and it is great to see M&S now stocking them.

The Tuesdays ones sound great - & pretty reasonably priced - may have to buy a couple of samples, any pther recommendations besides the pancake one?

And really want to try the Molecule 01 & various Frederic Malle's including Potrait of a Lady - which sounds lovely Cosi. Think I see a quick trip to Liberty's in my lunch hour tomorrow Smile

SOTD is a free Tauer sample I got, Ingrid. A little bit fusty for me, nearly washed it off as soon as I sprayed it- there was a strong flowery, powdery smell I really did'nt like -may have been the frangipani mixing with patchouli. Has settled down a bit, but don't think i'll be using it again this lady expains it far better than I can.

ShatzePage M and S do a perfume called Per Una exquisite which is a good match for Quelques Fleurs.

A previous poster was looking for Creed Virgin Island Water- Haus of Gloi makes a similar scent called Picaroon for only 2.50 USD. Also, Bath and Body Works Lime and Coconut is similar.

SOTD Tauer Carillon Pour Un Ange. The greatest Lily of The Valley in the world.

Stokey I ordered a mixed box of samples for £20 direct from 4160 Tuesdays. You can specify whether you order the floral or woody selection.I bought the floral one.At first whiff I like Ururas Tokyo Cafe,a kiss by the fireside and Lady Rose Unicorn plus surprisingly The Dark Heart Of Old Havana.Really don't like The Sexiest Scent.….. - smells like the catholic church and incense.I do need to try them properly though and give them a days wearing.

Ladies, you are the experts now, the thread is full of absolutely gorgeous and unique perfumes.
Fuzz keep the porn coming!
Teta if you end up not loving The Sexiest Scent swap it with me! I'm an incensehead and getting curious - but it seems that they don't ship to where I live. Put on a link here if you can, indie perfumers need our foot traffic and her perfumes sound lovely.

A cold day here so wearing a warm sweater and Eau Lente from Diptyque.

In Love Again is truly special, one of the best fruity florals I know. It was discontinued, then brought back by popular demand, but better buy some while it's still easy to source.

Also love it how you are finding gems from M&S! Next time I'm in the UK I'll head right away to Per Una their perfume department Wink
