This space is for anyone who wants to talk about perfumes - ask for recommendations, tell us which scent you are wearing today (=SOTD), list your favorites...

Sorry - second link was supposed to be this. And canny I also love Elie Saab and I don't love a lot of modern mainstream perfume. Very pretty without being dull, and IMO follows in the footsteps of JPG Classique in harking back to classic perfumery.

MissBattleaxe · 26/05/2014 11:13

Myrtle- what a beautiful piece of writing about the importance of perfume in your life! I really enjoyed reading it. It's like a story with scent- very evocative.

canny1234 · 26/05/2014 11:53

I wore ' vintage' Anais Anais when it first came out(you're so young Myrtle!).One of the Fragonard perfumes smells like Anais a..I bought the perfume on a visit to the Fragonard factory in Grasse(a small metal vial - I was only 18 and it seemed really expensive).Consequently it didn't last long.I remember being thrilled when I first sniffed Anais a.I used to marinade myself in it ( and Rive Gauche).Fast forward through Fidgi,Lutece,Paris,Calyx( which I loved) Annick Goutals Hadrian and various Cliniques, DKNY apple to now.I suit proper grown up ones!
Yes,go for it Myrtle.I can't even remember what Poison smells like.
SOTD will be something flowery for digging the garden - either lilac, tuberose or jasmine/wisteria.

OneLittleLady · 26/05/2014 11:57

canny your bottle is all ready to go and I'm hoping to get to the post office tomorrow. Things are a bit off kilter atm as BIL has been taken seriously ill with meningitis so am on emergency babysitting duty so if not tomorrow, it will be posted by the end of the week

FuzzLightbeard · 26/05/2014 19:07

OneLittleLady oh your poor BIL, I hope he is on the road to recovery very soon.

MissB I have the opposite problem with 4160 Tuesdays- I love so many I will have to go for the 'commitment phobe' option! Many of them do have something in common, not sure I can put my finger on it though.

Myrtle what a lovely post! I can completely relate. The scents I fall in love with almost transport me elsewhere- the perfumes of the 80s to my childhood and the 90s to teenage years. Niche scents are the only ones that take me to French patisseries and cool churches on hot days, fig trees by the beach and wet forest floors...

I definitely think Poison is worth revisiting. I ended up with some dregs in an old sample and a few dabs are perfect. Takes me back to 1988, my last year of primary and my teacher used to marinate in the stuff. It actually made my eyes water! I'm sure she must have thought I was always on the verge of tears. Strangely never put me off though and I still love it!

Stokey · 27/05/2014 12:24

Myrtle I re-smelt Poison the other day and really liked it. The SA was trying to persuade me to get Hypnotic Posion - which is nothing like the original, much more girly - and did that awful thing where they say you will break the moelcules if you rub your wrist together Hmm

SOTD is Apres L'Ondee. I got a sample of the EdT and I love it. I may need to invest, I really love that earthy, after the rain smell.

canny1234 · 27/05/2014 12:27

Thank you Onelittlelady.I will send yours this week too.I do hope your Brother In law is soon feeling better.
MissB I do understand.I feel that way about 4160 perfumes. There's a common base note that I don't quite take to.However I love Uraras Tokyo Cafe ( adore most perfumes with Rose and Violet in though).
SOTD is Acqua Universalis by MFK.This is my favourite fresh summer scent so far ( even though its fairly ephemeral).I also have discovered Grand Neroli by Atelier Cologne which is bracing and refreshing. Also love Pamplune by Aqua Allegoria but only on a really warm day( as its refreshingly green and bitter).Atelier Colognes do a sample set that I think I will order next as the reviews for this range seem to be pretty good.
The Byredo perfumes that I loved a few months ago don't smell so good on me now.Is it normal for your tastes to change and develop on a scent ' journey'?Or is it a change in weather and season.Certain scents like Ysl's In Love Again I can barely smell now. Some perfumes don't smell nice anymore.I know other people on this thread have had the same problem. But I don't know what causes it.

OneLittleLady · 27/05/2014 20:42

canny your parcel is in the post. I hope you don't mind me being a bit cheap and posting 2nd class, I had a lot of parcels to send out and it was pretty pricey! I hope you enjoy it when it gets to you Smile

cressetmama · 28/05/2014 09:30

So it's not just me who has reservations about the 4160s!! Thank you for the reassurance. I do like Urara and Shazam but mainly right at the beginning and again the next morning.

My mum had an FB of Poison when it was first out but stopped wearing it when she fell in love with Mitsouko... which she still wears. I've tried giving her samples of other things, but only the Nicolai Maharaniyah has come close since. She is allowed to be set in her ways at almost 80.

Yesterday in Boots, I had a sample of Chanel Chance, which I loved on a friend because it reminded me of Aqua Fiorentina (joint favourite Nose sample so far) and I was hoping for a cheaper alternative. Sad to say, it's Creed not Chanel all the way.

canny1234 · 28/05/2014 10:02

I ordered samples of Atelier Cologne yesterday. This appears to be 15 Euros for lots, plus no postage .These colognes all have citrus top notes but interesting heart and base notes. The Grand Neroli cologne has standard bracing top notes but a lovely warm amber base which makes it a bit different.I'm really looking forward to receiving them.

I've also e mailed Hermes and requested a sample of Rose Ikebana.Hermes don't do sample sets but will send out samples on request apparently.

SOTD is Magnolia Nobile.Am debating about going to the gym today.Managed to fall flat on my face yesterday, graze bits of me and squash the kids party rings. They were highly embarrassed and cross with me( not one bit concerned).Still feeling a bit sore.

FuzzLightbeard · 28/05/2014 11:08

Wow Canny I will have to add their sample pack to my list! I'm not going to buy any samples for a while though as I went a bit mad on them for a while and have been neglecting my poor bottles. Time to enjoy what I have for a bit (until I get the urge to try something new again!)

SOTD is L'Erbolario Meharees, now the proud owner of a bottle which my lovely mum brought back from her holiday. This is the best cheapie I've smelt yet, great stuff.

I still have probably about 1ml left in my sample if anyone wants to try it.

MyrtleDove · 28/05/2014 15:31

Had a shit day yesterday (nothing serious, just depression crap coinciding with PMT crap!) in Milton Keynes and it was so humid I really wasn't in the mood for Poison. Ended up trying the new Aqua Allegoria Limon Verte. Really nice and sharp - smells just like a fresh piece of lemon peel with the bitterness of the pith - though didn't last long on me! The rain we've been having around here made me contemplate going for Chanel No19 though.

MyrtleDove · 28/05/2014 15:32

(also thanks for the nice comments re my writing Smile)

MissBattleaxe · 28/05/2014 20:16

You're welcome Myrtle. You can't ever go wrong with Chanel No 19. I rate it very highly even though it's not Chanel's bestseller.

MyrtleDove · 28/05/2014 21:07

Actually I'm not sure about Chanel No19 on me - I like the smell of it, just not too sure about it on me. It just smells of grass and metal and that's kind of it. I love Aqua Allegoria Pamplelune (absolutely love grapefruit scents), need some of that. I wish I could have all the Aqua Allegorias just for the bottles!

canny1234 · 28/05/2014 21:37

I love Pamplelune too Myrtle. The trouble is I need a warm sunny day to wear it when the bitter greenness of it would be utterly refreshing.

I've downloaded the Luca Turin guide to Perfume on my kindle today. Its been fascinating to read the reviews and the mystique-debunking.Its also surprisingly entertaining and easy to read.I've also downloaded the book about the Seville a l Aube perfume story - but got a bit bored after the first few pages. Can anyone recommend any good fiction or factual books about perfume?

MissBattleaxe · 29/05/2014 12:16

This is a good book about scent www.amazon.co.uk/The-Perfect-Scent-Perfume-Industry/dp/0312425775

canny1234 · 29/05/2014 12:56

Thank you Missbattleaxe.I shall see if I can borrow this from the library.
SOTD is Acqua Universalis Forte today but went to bed in Rose Noir by Byredo.I find this scent really comforting, warming and soothing at night, but don't like it so much for daywear.

Myrtle Chanel No 19 smells horrible on me.Chanel No 5 smells even worse.I'm really not sure I agree with Luca Turin's theory that all perfumes smell the same on everyone. That body 'chemistry' doesn't have any affect on smell.

wiltingfast · 29/05/2014 13:04

Ah I love chanel 19! Be warned though the the EdP and EdT are v different. I prefer the EdP in summer and the EdT in winter when it has more sparkle. The EdP to me is more floral so maybe you should try that one?

I can second The Perfect Scent about the development of Lovely by SJP and also another much heavier longer one is The Emperor of Scent which is about Luca Turin and his theory of smell www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/s/ref=is_box_?k=chandler+burr&x=0&y=0. I don't pretend I understood all the chemistry but it was a v interesting read :).

A fiction classic is Perfume by Patrick Suskind www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/0141041153/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1401364886&sr=1-1&pi=SL75

MyrtleDove · 29/05/2014 15:14

Body chemistry makes such a difference though! Lots of pretty florals smell horrendous on me. My skin amplifies sweetness and spices - Mitsouko for instance is a whole heap of anise and cinnamon on me, it basically smells of Christmas. Not a scent I can wear until December for that reason Grin

wiltingfast · 29/05/2014 16:15

Oh me too! Tom Fords Tobbaco vanille smells incredibly sweet on me, like jam and candy, Dh actually asked why I smelled like a sweet shop and he never comments on how I am smelling!! (It varies a lot)

OneLittleLady · 30/05/2014 11:47

canny the parcel arrived this morning. it's lovely thank you Smile Thanks

canny1234 · 30/05/2014 12:36

Glad it got there safely.I was a bit worried whether I'd wrapped it up enough.
SOTD is Ellie Saab.

Thank you Wilting for those suggestions.I remember watching the Perfume movie and the spectacular birth amidst the Sardines.I seem to remember it was relentlessly gory but a pretty good movie.

MyrtleDove · 30/05/2014 15:41

SOTD is Odin 11 Semma. First impression - cough mixture! The strong liquoricey type. Fortunately, that's a smell I quite like so I'm OK with that! I think it's the clove-y smell of the carnation together with the tobacco and chilli (my cough mixture has cayenne in it, this one ). The tobacco comes out much more strongly now. It's nice, I'm just not used to wearing tobacco fragrances so it smells a bit odd - I think maybe because it smells of a 'thing' that's relatively rarely associated with women's fragrance nowadays.

cressetmama · 30/05/2014 16:28

Love your description of Odin 11 Semma, Myrtle; it's my best Nose sample to date. But on me it turns into soft, cosy tobacco and carnation; I would love more than 3ml, for autumn-winter, but cannot bring myself to spend £130!

SOTD is the first ever Comme des Garcons EdP, a sample I got to see if I still liked it, and yes I do. Ink and incense. Another bottle to lust after but if I recall rightly, rather more accessibly priced.
