That time of year approaches. Dinner and a bit of cheesy dancing on its way....

Anyhow, want something simple, stylish, little bit dressy, not expensive, a bit timeless, to wear with my lovely Indigo New Look skinnies (thank you Style and Beauty people). Am 5'2" and a bit pear-shaped if that helps! Preferably black (ok with indigo skinnies?)

Any suggestions? Have tried on a lovely sheer top in Zara but it was cropped which I can't wear, a few things in h&m and just seen a shell top with some sparkle round the neck on New Look...

New Look top

Zara top

Have this in black which I like but don't feel its dressy enough

I do think that retro look does work best on 'curvier' ladies though Pinup. It would look bloody stupid on me as I am a plank at best.

MrsCampbellBlack · 03/11/2013 18:28

Yes, you need a waist and I don't have one of those - hence I find dresses unless shift/tunic style hard to pull off.

Pinupgirl · 03/11/2013 18:30

Disagree Ecuador-a good friend of mine is a very petite size 8 and looks amazing in retro style dresses-they can create curves if you don't have them.

But that still doesn't excuse a poster being deliberately rude.

To the poster who cited kate moss as a style icon-no thanks! Do you think we will still be talking about her as an icon in 50 years a la Marilyn Monroe, audrey Hepburn, jackie O? Doubt it.

Pinupgirl · 03/11/2013 18:32

Shift dresses are retro though mrscb-Audrey Hepburn and twiggy loved shift dresses so in reality you are wearing vintage style after a fashion.

mammadiggingdeep · 03/11/2013 18:49

Anywaaaaaay....back to the op....

I went to primark today and they have little sequinned box jackets/blazers. They're in gold or black. Look nicer than they sound.

Think they were 24.99. You could wear it with skinnies, heels, and a cami top underneath, prob black would be best.

I'm kicking myself I didn't get one!! They didn't look cheap at all. You'd never guess it was primani...it kinda looked more river island. Wish I'd got one got my Xmas do's.

mammadiggingdeep · 03/11/2013 18:51

Ps pinup I agree Marilyn is a massive icon but yes, I think Kate moss will be an iconic figure in the future. She wore skinnies and ballet pumps 5 years before it was mainstream high street fashion. Like her or not but she is an iconic figure

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 03/11/2013 18:51

Skinnies are retro too, of course.

polyhymnia · 03/11/2013 18:51

Reading through this whole thread, there seems to be some confusion among posters about whether the OP is going on a pretty informal 'girls' night out' which will include a meal of some kind and perhaps a club, or to some sort of 'Christmas do' - ie, more formal dinner, with dancing after.

I think - only guessing - that the people who say jeans, top, etc great think it's the former (as, I think, I do) and the people who say no jeans think it's the latter?

trixymalixy · 03/11/2013 18:54

Yet you're happy to be rude about women who wear skinnies and call them frumps? Tad hypocritical. Does it make you feel better about yourself for putting them down?

mammadiggingdeep · 03/11/2013 19:04

Poly....

The op herself said she has skinnies she wants to wear. She asked us to suggest some good ideas for tips to wear with her indigo jeans. I don't know why there was any confusion and why anybody thought it was ok to say the op's choice of skinnies was frumpy (??) or anything else.

Ecuador · 03/11/2013 19:09

Loving all the head tilts!

Kate Moss is iconic whether you like it or not Pinup. She was the first of her ilk.

I love a bit of Twiggy and Hepburn myself, not so much Marilyn but still of course appreciate her influence. I think you need a waist and boobs to pull of that particular look and I have neither but I think I wear a shift dress quite nicely due to aforesaid plank tendencies.

Yes back to the topic in hand. I must admit I had assumed that it was a fairly casual christmas 'do' given that the OP was to be wearing jeans in the first place.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 03/11/2013 19:15

Black silk with a big Silver cuff maybe?

MarshaBrady · 03/11/2013 19:18

That's nice. I like the silk t look.

Pinupgirl · 03/11/2013 19:22

Please read the thread-it was the op who suggested her outfit was possibly frumpy first not myself. And yes I do think the jeans and heels look is frumpy but that's only because it's so common. I didn't resort to name calling about women's size because I am not insecure about mine.

FaddyPeony · 03/11/2013 19:32

I like that look trixy and I like the look you suggested Marsha. Personally I feel v.glad that structured/fancy T-shirt sleeves are in at the minute. I'm quite done with nude shoulders for nights out unless it's summer or something.

MrsCampbellBlack · 03/11/2013 19:34

Trixy - I love that look and have it pinned as well.

Faddy - you and me both on covered arms and shoulders in the winter. You're lucky to get me out of a jumper really.

MarshaBrady · 03/11/2013 19:35

Me too Faddy. I'm going to get something, not sure what yet.

MarshaBrady · 03/11/2013 19:37

And mostly I want to feel really comfortable. So if heels and skinnies I'm ok with looseness, slouch or warmth. And not too ott for skinnies.

sadsometimes · 03/11/2013 19:37

Mrscampbellblack is it very important that we know the brands of your skinnies and shirt? Personally I would wear skinnies and shirt to the pub /in the week not to a Christmas evening 'do' but if the op likes her jeans and is happy in them that's great

MrsCampbellBlack · 03/11/2013 19:38

Oh yes terribly important sadsometimes Wink

MrsCampbellBlack · 03/11/2013 19:39

Honestly, I reckon school mum's night out is going to be as controversial as the school run dress threads of old.

ColouringInQueen · 03/11/2013 19:40

Yep Ecuador it is not formal - meal out in restaurant tho nothing fancy then some cheesy dancing.... some mums will prob glam it up, but at the mo I'm more likely to buy some black skinnies and a sparkly top Wink

Thanks for the tops suggestions - def getting warmer!

Most amused by the discussions too Grin
