That time of year approaches. Dinner and a bit of cheesy dancing on its way....

Anyhow, want something simple, stylish, little bit dressy, not expensive, a bit timeless, to wear with my lovely Indigo New Look skinnies (thank you Style and Beauty people). Am 5'2" and a bit pear-shaped if that helps! Preferably black (ok with indigo skinnies?)

Any suggestions? Have tried on a lovely sheer top in Zara but it was cropped which I can't wear, a few things in h&m and just seen a shell top with some sparkle round the neck on New Look...

New Look top

Zara top

Have this in black which I like but don't feel its dressy enough

Hate retro look too Mrs Campbell

OrchidLass · 03/11/2013 13:29

The retro look has kind of been done to death round here so that puts me off that particular look.

OP I'm sure you'll find something you love and feel comfortable in and that's the important thing.

MortifiedAnyFuckerAdams · 03/11/2013 13:31

Id go for something like this

m.hm.com/gb/product/17121?article=17121-A#mediaType=FASHION_FRONT

MortifiedAnyFuckerAdams · 03/11/2013 13:35

I love skinny jeans, nice top and heels for a night out. Its a staple look fir me.

Id feel I was in fancy dress in the retro stuff.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 03/11/2013 13:46

'Dressy' trousers and a 'nice' top is the sort of thing my mum would wear (she's in her early 60s) for a night out.

The biggest problem now is that it's so hard to find decent tops that are not polyester, unless you can afford high-end. So I tend to wear the same old things over and over again.

If I was rich I'd buy this.

Ecuador · 03/11/2013 13:50

I think retro is waaaay out there and not a look that many would feel comfortable.

It is beside the point for this thread.

Looking through tons of on-line shops last night for a christmassy top, it drove me slightly bonkers when they just had 'tops' and go on to list 1,368 wildly different styles. Why can't they whittle it down to evening tops etc - some do I know, but most don't grrr...

Ecuador · 03/11/2013 13:51

Remus, they would be more sort of slacks though I presume Grin! No offence to your mum!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 03/11/2013 13:58

Not slacks - like straight leg jeans, but fabric, I guess. Not the height of fashion, sure, but not quite Classic Collection. :)

Pinupgirl · 03/11/2013 14:03

Well I guess I take it to the extreme but that was not the point I was trying to make.I was just saying that its a bit boring when someone posts for an outfit idea and everyone piles in with the skinnies, top and heels look-its been done to death.

I think we should maybe some times suggest ideas that the op might not have previously considered is all-its boring to go out on a Saturday night and see crowds of 40 something women in essentially the same uniform.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 03/11/2013 14:06

But the retro look has also been done to death, surely? That's sort of the point of it, no?

Pinupgirl · 03/11/2013 14:13

I don't know remus how many 40 something women do you see out on a Saturday night dressed in a retro style?Wink

Pinupgirl · 03/11/2013 14:15

Anyway this is getting off track from what the op asked for. If you are happy to wear the skinnies with a nice top and acknowledge that it may be a wee bit frumpy but its what you are happy in-then all power to you.

Good heels and bag are a must though!Grin

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 03/11/2013 14:19

My point is that the very fact that it is retro means that it is really not all that 'out there' or imaginative. But what do I know - I'm a boring person who's perfectly happy in skinnies and heels, or in a mini dress, or in shorts, or indeed in my PJs.

Not everybody wants to be looked at. Even as a goth, I didn't really.

It's a shame that this thread hasn't managed to find the OP a load of nice tops though. Sorry, OP - am still looking.

spottywoowoo · 03/11/2013 14:25

TK Maxx always come up with something . . .

Anglomania - still £70 but would be nice with dark skinnies, heels and statement jewellery:

www.tkmaxx.com/gold-label/brown-top-/invt/12000757&bklist=icat,4,shop,1,0303

Grey, silk floaty might work too (and has sleeves if you need that - I know I do):

spottywoowoo · 03/11/2013 14:28

Only £16.50 in Great Plains sale and has sparkly bits (and sleeves again - you probably have gorgeous arms and I'm just projecting my bingo wings here . . .):

Navy floaty blouse from GP too in sale:

noddyholder · 03/11/2013 14:28

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 03/11/2013 14:32

Whistles sale silk

noddyholder · 03/11/2013 14:32

this with grey skinny trousers and silver/pewter heels?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 03/11/2013 14:33

Noddy - I used to have a similar one from Oasis, but had to charity shop it, as I got too norky for it. :(

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 03/11/2013 14:34

Even better bargain

MrsCampbellBlack · 03/11/2013 15:01

Pinup - it really isn't frumpy - that's just rubbish. Seriously, when I wear skinny j brands, equipment shirt - I really don't look frumpy.

I look I think age appropriate and pretty chic Wink

MrsCampbellBlack · 03/11/2013 15:07

nice if you have good arms

Ecuador · 03/11/2013 15:14

Do you think Mossy looks a frump in skinnies, high heels and a bit of glitter on top? No me neither Wink.

MrsCB, I like that ASOS top Smile.

I've spent hours last night and today looking at tops and there seems to be very little grabbing my attention Confused.

ColouringInQueen · 03/11/2013 15:51

Rebus that westwood top is amazing!

Spotty those GP links aren't working I'm afraid!

Remus whistles top is good but not sure my arms are up to it.

I would be up for something a bit quirky if I really liked it.

Noddy that mango one is more like it!

Grr whistles links going straight to homepage, but will have a good look through their sale range

Wouldn't say no to a dress, just find as 5'2 slightly pear shaped, they're not so easy to find. Plus skinnies good for shaping Wink

Mrs c that asos one is lovely but there's no way I have the arms Wink

Off to browse GP and Whistles...
