Why are Brits so badly dressed?? And what is about bra straps & strappy tops - eeugh!

Have been in London this morning on trains and people-watching, and have seen virtually NO women I would describe as well-dressed. I don't mean formally smart - just stylish... it's a plethora of unco-ordinated vests & skirts, sloppy old sandals and mishapen dresses.

And what is the thing about those strappy tops with whopping great white bra straps underneath and on show? Is there any decent way to wear one if you're bigger than a 32A ???

We're such slobs...

And OMG - there are SO MANY FAT PEOPLE TOO in highly unsuitable clothing..

my mum loves to people watch here. she's half French and well-travelled and says people here in Edinburgh are some of the worst dressed on the planet.

Feistybird · 04/07/2006 13:06

hope you have your hard hat handy....

expatinscotland · 04/07/2006 13:06

as she put it, 'for God's sake can't they at least cover that up w/a garment?'

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 04/07/2006 13:07

don't agree about bra-straps. some look shit but carefully chosen ones in co-ordinated or contrasting colours look nice imo. But right now, tbo, I think most people don;t care that much what they look like. they just want to be cool. even the fact ones.

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 04/07/2006 13:08

fat ones

SSSandy · 04/07/2006 13:08

Bravissimo inbuilt bra tops are fab for that.

I am a recent convert and they look fab and smooth.

Have got a halterneck, bandeau and strappy on ein various colours. Beautiful fit, perky norks and no bra straps. Everyone should have twenty imo(i certainly wish I had!)

but those bras without shoulder straps are so uncomfortable

I'm wearing a strappy top today with a strapless bra and I feel like I have a rubberband around my chest!

beckybrastraps · 04/07/2006 13:10

I loathe bra straps on display. If you need a bra under it (and unless you're pre-pubescently flat-chested, you DO need a bra under it), get one with a built in bra. Yuck, yuck, yuck.

SSSandy · 04/07/2006 13:10

really? I have a few cheapo skin coloured ones from H and M and they're fine, don't notice them at all when I have them on.

Fimbo · 04/07/2006 13:10

My friend and I had this very conversation just the other day. We both wear strapless bra's under strappy tops - we though we were in the minority!.

I can't stand white dresses that look almost see through and you can see the person's thong - eugh!

misdee · 04/07/2006 13:12

so what should us fatties wear then?

yesterday i wore a sheer top with black bra (the pattern meant you couldntr actually see through the fabric) and a skirt. but once i got home i put on a strappy vest and a pair of shorts as i was sooooo hot. (and not i na good way either). at least in winter i can cover up and look decent. in summer i am battling looking good with keeping cool. doesnt work.

beckybrastraps · 04/07/2006 13:12

Gosh sorry! "Pre-pubescently flat-chested" was rather rude. I meant of course, blessed with the physique of a couture model.

poisson · 04/07/2006 13:13

i agree strapless bra can be very resticting
the see thoguth bra look is bad imo

poisson · 04/07/2006 13:14

i thihk colour fuls taprs are ok arnt they
must admit i wodul nt wear a vest style anwyhere smart

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 04/07/2006 13:14

my pet hate is light-weight white trousers where you find yourself walking behind someone trying to work out if they're wearing knickers or not. You lot are making me paranoid now about my bra straps. I've got a green top on with a bright pink bra, I thought it was perfectly acceptable these days.

MrsBadger · 04/07/2006 13:14

think summer fashion foxes brits - in the winter when everyone is wearing nice wool coats and boots it all looks a million times better.

My colleagues are terrible - I don't care how informal the environment is, visible grubby bra straps are not professional. Ditto midriff. Ditto shorts with socks and trainers. In fact all of the above are on one girl...

Strapless bras are fantastic but am currently loving very lightweight shortsleeved blouses which mean normal bra and no armpit-flashing.

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 04/07/2006 13:15

" colour fuls taprs " explanation please

beckybrastraps · 04/07/2006 13:15

Skirts more flattering than shorts for those of us who are womanly (matronly?!) in shape. And jsut as cool. Lightweight, loosish tops in cotton are just as cool as fitted strappy tops. And provide more sun protection.

foxinsocks · 04/07/2006 13:16

the see through strap bras are very strange - you can still see them so I can't understand the point of them? unless you are trying to impress someone who will always be more than 20 foot away from you

I'm impressed that some of you wear the ones with built in bras. Do you all have perky norks? I find the ones with built in bras don't give enough support for those who have droppy norks.

expatinscotland · 04/07/2006 13:16

a lot of the clothes look like they were made in a sweatshop for next to nothing or fished out of a bin from the 1980s.

yuck.

the minnie mouse look is popular, too.

foxinsocks · 04/07/2006 13:17

or even droopy
