Have been in London this morning on trains and people-watching, and have seen virtually NO women I would describe as well-dressed. I don't mean formally smart - just stylish... it's a plethora of unco-ordinated vests & skirts, sloppy old sandals and mishapen dresses.

And what is the thing about those strappy tops with whopping great white bra straps underneath and on show? Is there any decent way to wear one if you're bigger than a 32A ???

We're such slobs...

And OMG - there are SO MANY FAT PEOPLE TOO in highly unsuitable clothing..

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 04/07/2006 13:18

agree about see though bra straps. hate them. they always look grey and plasticy. dh really likes them. i keep trying to tell him that there are some things that are just wrong

misdee · 04/07/2006 13:19

foxinsocks, built in bra tops just wont contain me. and dd3 would be having a field day!!

beckybrastraps · 04/07/2006 13:19

Built in proper underwired bras foxinsocks, not those useless pouches some of them have.

spacedonkey · 04/07/2006 13:19

I like the colourful bra strap look, it's just when you see grubby big bra straps on show they look manky :-S

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 04/07/2006 13:19

hat breathes sigh of relief as her pink bra straps meet the fishey ones approval

oliveoil · 04/07/2006 13:19

Coloured bra straps a MUST under vest tops

Ok if it looks like you want to show them iyswim. I recommend Calvin Klein.

My pet hate is those tranparent ones. Er, WE CAN SEE THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MrsBadger · 04/07/2006 13:20

ah, and M&S have a white vest with an actual proper bra in it - underwired, padded cups so no peanut-smuggling. Is a bit of a struggle to get into though as doesn't undo anywhere , but fab once on.

beckybrastraps · 04/07/2006 13:21

Bravissimo - I bet they could contain even you misdee!

misdee · 04/07/2006 13:21

mrs b, they only have a 34 A. i am further along tha alphabet lol.

beckybrastraps · 04/07/2006 13:22

I'm a G-cup and am fully contained!

MrsBadger · 04/07/2006 13:22

yes yes their online shop is rubbish

but worth going into store for if you need one

misdee · 04/07/2006 13:23

so will my pastel stripey coloured bra strap pass under a vest top?

serenity · 04/07/2006 13:24

I'm with you there foxinsocks, I wear a bra even with the built in bit. If I ever do wear a spaghetti top, I never bother hiding the straps - I make sure I'm wearing something really obvious (black top/red straps) so it looks intentional. I get more stressed about the back of the bra riding up higher than the back of the top tbh.

Can't stand walking behing someone in cheap unlined white trousers/skirts - I do not want to have to look at your arse, thank you very much. Please buy a petticote/decent trousers.

Thomcat · 04/07/2006 13:24

I find strapless bras, esp in this heat, really constricting and uncomfortable. I don't find them very flattering on my bust either.
And I'm not going to be uncomfortable for anyone. So if you can see a bit of a bra strap on me - tough.

Oh and for the record, I look stylish and fabulous today even though when I move around my bra straps may be slighly visable.

Oh and PS just for the record - what would you have a 'fat person' wear in this heat? What would be ok for you?

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 04/07/2006 13:25

I think Olive Oil is right - it needs to look like you want to show them, like it's deliberately part of your outfit, so any carefully chosen colour (and style - ie not girt big wide straps) is, I think, ok. though I have been shaken a bit by this thread

PandaG · 04/07/2006 13:25

agree bravissimo ones are fab

beckybrastraps · 04/07/2006 13:25

can I do a link?

crunchie · 04/07/2006 13:26

I hate those see through strap things too!! I co-ordinate bra to top, so if I am wearing hot pink vest, I wear hot pink bra. White vests are NEVER strappy, always with nude t-shirt bra and vest that covers straps (M&S essentials vests, loads of colours £3.50 or 2 for £6, neat shape, deep scoop neck, but covers straps!) Today I wam wearing a black bra, a black strappy vest and a black twisted strap dress, therefore all work together.

You can do contrast straps and vest too, so with racer back vest in blue a pink bra is fine, if it is a nice pink bra tbh.

I think I look oh so stylish today tbh, in my monsoon beach dress, black vest, over-sized sunnies and free flip flops from Elle magazine

crunchie · 04/07/2006 13:30

It is not about fat v thin, it is about NO-ONE wearing see throgh white trews and manky bra straps. In high summer fat people and thin people should wear clothes that fit, tight vests are OK if there are smooth lines, they look yucky if they are streched over lumps, BUY A BIGGER SIZE. Floaty tops are fab too, they can be much cooler than tight anyway.

beckybrastraps · 04/07/2006 13:33

I believe I did refer to myself as "matronly" Thomcat!

And I too look fab!

serenity · 04/07/2006 13:38

Well, that Bravissomo vest wouldn't fit me!

TC - I'm pretty fat (size 20) today I wore a sleeveless (yes, I know flabby arms ) fitted blouse and a loose knee length cotton skirt, but only because I'm not planning a lot of walking. My legs chafe when it's this hot, so I prefer trousers - did it when I was a 14 too!

Yesterday I wore long cropped dark coloured jeans, and a black M&S deep V fitted T shirt. I looked big, but I am big and wearing a tent will only make me look bigger. I hope that showing I have a waist and boobs is slightly more attractive (yeah right!) I love the summer, but much prefer dressing for the winter.

Thomcat · 04/07/2006 13:41

I'm sure you look gorgeous Beckybrastraps.

Thomcat · 04/07/2006 13:44

Listen - none of the larger ladies need to tell me what they are wearing etc. I'm asking Normasocks, as she is so offened by 'fat people' what she would have said people wear in this heat that won't offend her.

I'm not fat as such, not skinny either, I just didn't really dig the last line of Normas post.

treacletart · 04/07/2006 13:44

I cried the other day because noone in the world makes a strapless bra to fit my 32H norks - engineeering impossibilty it seems . I get very depressed every year when it gets really hot because I find it so difficult to keep cool and look halfway decent.
