Have been in London this morning on trains and people-watching, and have seen virtually NO women I would describe as well-dressed. I don't mean formally smart - just stylish... it's a plethora of unco-ordinated vests & skirts, sloppy old sandals and mishapen dresses.

And what is the thing about those strappy tops with whopping great white bra straps underneath and on show? Is there any decent way to wear one if you're bigger than a 32A ???

We're such slobs...

And OMG - there are SO MANY FAT PEOPLE TOO in highly unsuitable clothing..

Have made it sound like Norma is offened by 'fat people' in general, and that's not what I meantr. It's more about what does she think larger ladies should wear?

for the record I am mostly wearing a long line black cotton vest top (worn back to front trust me it looks better that way) a black bra and a black & retro print cotton A line skirt. Ive been wearing pretty much the same outfit for a week.

marthamoo · 04/07/2006 13:49

I bought a dress in M&S today - I love it, it's cheesecloth with crochet bits and strappy straps...but it looks blimmin' awful with my bras. I only have substantial bras and the straps are way too wide. Should I take it back or try and get a strapless bra? It's years since I wore one and I remember it doing funny things to my norks then and I was about an A cup - I'm a 36D now.

noddyholder · 04/07/2006 13:50

I just don't get this either what are people over your limit supposed to wear in hot weather?I am not bothered about what other people look like in their clothes more interested in how nice they are as people rather than how good they look in a vest Get a life!

serenity · 04/07/2006 13:51

Didn't even see that line TC, obviously started to mentally write my first post before I got to that bit! I'd be interested to hear if NOrmas list matches my own personal 'good god, I can't wear that' list

harpsichordcarrier · 04/07/2006 13:54

haha have you lot ever tried to wear a strapless bra with big norks.
NOT pretty.
just serves to form them into a low slung shelf for catching stray scraps of food.
I was just thinking the other day, how the world has prgressed so that we can show our bra straps now. thank god for that I say. I rather have gone out with sick in my hair than with my bra strap showing when I was a girl. which was a PITA.

poisson · 04/07/2006 13:56

thsi hiwte dress?

poisson · 04/07/2006 13:56

crunchie is it the green dress iwht the jewelled bits?

harpsichordcarrier · 04/07/2006 13:56

thomcat - as a FAT PERSON I must say I am just about restraining myself from RUNNING to the wardrobe to dress myself in a highly unsuitable manner.
just to provoke, you know?

harpsichordcarrier · 04/07/2006 13:57

see through straps are GRIMOLA.
they just dig into the flab forming a sort of shiny gutter effect.

poisson · 04/07/2006 13:58

er hc
one prob
you arent fat

please say you arent cos if you are then we are all doomed

beckybrastraps · 04/07/2006 13:59

Strapless bras are a waste of fabric for me.

I rather like the bravissimo tops, but then I'm used to having big boobs, so I'm beyond being self-conscious about them.

marthamoo · 04/07/2006 13:59

No, this one, in khaki

NomDePlume · 04/07/2006 13:59

I agree re the bra straps thing, but I also agree with the no strapless bras thing, so I'm stumped...

FWIW, I don't wear spagetti strapped vest tops etc, I wear the ones with wider shoulders to cover my straps.

poisson · 04/07/2006 13:59

very similar isnt it!

NomDePlume · 04/07/2006 14:00

and @ see thriugh rubber straps. They are so pointless and leave me with big red weals because they just aren't flexible like elastic.

marthamoo · 04/07/2006 14:00

Yeah, it was a good guess. I don't think I could do a white dress - unless I wore a plastic cover over the top like new settees have.

harpsichordcarrier · 04/07/2006 14:06

no I'm not fat
I was saying it for effect
I am Big Boned
nice frock marthmoo

Bozza · 04/07/2006 14:07

so me wearing a choc brown bra with racer back straps under a coral coloured vest top also with racer back straps is OK? The straps followed the same lines but obviously showed.

I find strapless bras are more unflattering than no bra - am 34B and after two kids a bit droopy but strapless seems to cut my chest in two so I end up with 4 bosoms as Trinny and Suse would point out.

marthamoo · 04/07/2006 14:08

Nice frock on someone other than me, I fear...

cardy · 04/07/2006 14:10

On a slightly different 'style' note but along the same lines (i.e. showing underwear) I really hate the low slung jeans (or cut-offs) showing lots of lacey knickers (usually in bright colours). It was bad enough when it was thongs but big lacey knickers and v.low jeans not a good look esp. if you are bigger than Kate Moss, and most of are.

NotQuiteCockney · 04/07/2006 14:11

I can't wear skirts, I chafe. Well I might not in slightly cooler weather, am one stone down on pre-preg weight, so who knows, but in this weather, I would chafe.

I struggle with bras and vests and so on. Prob should start thread asking for help ...

foxinsocks · 04/07/2006 14:13

ooh I like that dress marthamoo

I didn't realise colour co-ordinated bra straps were ok - will have to expand my bra wardrobe!

Thomcat · 04/07/2006 14:13

What if you wear girly type boxer shorts under a skirt to prevent chaffing? Do you know what I mean? Those tight short style pants? Would that help. Or actually just nick a pair of your hubbys boxers and wear them under a skirt??????
