Why are Brits so badly dressed?? And what is about bra straps & strappy tops - eeugh!

Have been in London this morning on trains and people-watching, and have seen virtually NO women I would describe as well-dressed. I don't mean formally smart - just stylish... it's a plethora of unco-ordinated vests & skirts, sloppy old sandals and mishapen dresses.

And what is the thing about those strappy tops with whopping great white bra straps underneath and on show? Is there any decent way to wear one if you're bigger than a 32A ???

We're such slobs...

And OMG - there are SO MANY FAT PEOPLE TOO in highly unsuitable clothing..

FGS IF ITS THAT BAD LOSE SOEM WEIGHT

NotQuiteCockney · 04/07/2006 14:15

I tend to just wear skorts. Or shorts.

I could nick hubby's boxers, but they're really quite big. I do own bike shorts, which would probably do the job, but they don't really stay put. Maybe too big?

I should look at girl boxers. Or similar. I don't think I own any summer skirts any more, anyway. Oh, I have one festival-bought multicoloured strappy floaty dress. Empire cut I think. Oddly enough, unworn.

NotQuiteCockney · 04/07/2006 14:15

Cod. Look. Weight just isn't that simple is it. It's hardly like anyone who's bigger is going to have not thought of losing weight.

Thomcat · 04/07/2006 14:15

Yeah wish I was minted enough to have a bra to match up with every vest top I own. As it is every now and then one might get a glimpse of my black bra under my chocolate brown vest

marthamoo · 04/07/2006 14:16

So I need a khaki bra? Some of my very old white ones are nearly khaki..would that do ?

poisson · 04/07/2006 14:16

i knwo buit fgs they are adults

if your helath isbeing affected by it hen sotp chowing you greedy heifers

it is simple
eat less and do more

harpsichordcarrier · 04/07/2006 14:17

NQC - talcum powder helps with the chafing
also, for the vests I wear spaghetti vests with a poncey little crochet cardy or a linen short sleeved shirt over the top (unbuttoned) or a brightly coloured vest with a wafty transparent kaftan.
they do a nice range of colours of vest in M&S
I have two white linen shirts I bought from Peacocks or somewhere for thruppence.

NotQuiteCockney · 04/07/2006 14:17

Hmmm, and what do you say to women who are having, say, an average of more than 3.5 bottles of wine per week, and hence doing their livers irreperable damage? Or those who smoke?

People do things that aren't good for them. We're not always entirely sensible. Shocker.

poisson · 04/07/2006 14:17

is ay stop you greedy mares
look at saint puff of puff land and her wirght loss

NotQuiteCockney · 04/07/2006 14:18

Hmm, should try talcum powder, and maybe floaty things. Poncey crocheted cardi made out of what? I keep thinking about making myself a lacy sort of cardi, have some linen/cotton blend around, but it's slubby ...

harpsichordcarrier · 04/07/2006 14:19

I have a bright pink bra, the straps of which enhance any outfit .
O and I have some GREAT shorts from Next - they were in a fashion spread in the Sunday papers.
will try and find them

NotQuiteCockney · 04/07/2006 14:19

I currently have a grand total of three non-running bras I can stand. Am holding out until I can make it back to same shop I got them from (Canada, called Secrets From Your Sister), where they are lovely, and have loaner thin white vests to see how bras look under things!

nailpolish · 04/07/2006 14:20

LOL @ "shiny gutter effect"

oh pmsl

foxinsocks · 04/07/2006 14:22

thomcat, was thinking of getting one colour (prob a blue one as most of my vests are similar colour anyway!)

don't know what i would wear under that marthamoo - what is the back of it like?

NotQuiteCockney · 04/07/2006 14:22

But cod, people who manage to lose lots of weight and keep it off are rare as hen's teeth. From a health perspective, rapid weight gains and losses are as bad, if not worse, than being overweight.

And oddly enough, from what I know, online shouting at people isn't generally associated with great successful weight loss. (Ok, I've not done a double-blind study, but still ...)

crunchie · 04/07/2006 14:23

Cod It is the Dela black Jersey beach dress (Fab fit and v flattering) Cannot do link to monsoon page as the actual dress doesn't come up. Search for Dela.

harpsichordcarrier · 04/07/2006 14:23

here they are, they are called roll up boarder shorts

for people at boarding school presumably
or boarding a plane
I have them in khai and they are quite flatterin

harpsichordcarrier · 04/07/2006 14:24

Monsoon website is crap isn't it crunchie
topshop is worse
next is poxy too
bane of my life

marthamoo · 04/07/2006 14:25

It's straight across - I think I'm going to take it back

NotQuiteCockney · 04/07/2006 14:25

Hmm, hc, those don't look flattering to the pear-shaped among us (i.e. me).

I like pleaty sorts of shorts, that stop at mid-thigh. I think. Which don't seem to exist this year.

nailpolish · 04/07/2006 14:25

harpsi they are for boarding your yacht

nailpolish · 04/07/2006 14:26

front pleats are the most unflattering invention ever

EVER

marthamoo · 04/07/2006 14:26

I like those, harpsi - could do with a pair of shorts. Do you think you can wear them while camping, as I don't have a yacht to board?

foxinsocks · 04/07/2006 14:26

nooo martha - it looks so nice

I would try a strapless bra with that

harpsichordcarrier · 04/07/2006 14:27

which one, nailpolish
NQC - no honestly they are flattering. I have a big arse and they are a good length. you can roll them up and down to suit.
