Shiny new thread for some shiny new perfumes (and classics and niche brands)

Apologies if you've done this one but has anyone tried Spicebomb? I saw Flowerbomb mentioned earlier. I did have a phase of that and it still glowers from my dressing table...

kittykarate · 10/06/2013 16:56

Brandalley have some L'artisan Parfumeur on offer at the minute

www.brandalley.co.uk/FSMarque/Id-20474-Produit-257252

So tempted by the 6 x 15ml box..

FrugalFashionista · 10/06/2013 17:46

Belle welcome and Kitty go for it!
Oh, and I started out as a tuberose hater (Tubereuse by Mona di Orio might be a gateway drug for someone who likes heliotrope) but now I wear Beyond Love and Loretta Grin

In the morning, I used a hairspray that my mother forgot here: a burst of aldehydes.
On the tram, a middle aged lady entered in a golden, honeyed cloud of aldehydes.
At home, I dabbed on some Chanel 5 EDP.
I can't get enough of this; honeyed, golden, warm, sensual, but with clearly defined sharp aldehydic outlines. A sister perfume to Vega by Guerlain. Really loving this atm!

FrugalFashionista · 10/06/2013 17:54

I've worn Spicebomb. It's okay but I was not bowled over - lots of spicy oriental masculines are fairly similar, so it was a bit 'deja senti' for me. But it's quite well done for a mass market 'fume so if you like it, do wear it - very subversive on a woman. I love the kitschy hand grenade bottle!

Belle random picks for you (based on your vanilla/heliotrope/spicy/woody leanings):
LADDM, Miriam, Vanille Intense by Nicolai, L'Eau d'Hiver, Farnesiana, Une Fleur de Cassie, Habit Rouge, Cinema, Dries van Noten.

OneLittleLady · 10/06/2013 17:57

I'd love to try Spicebomb, being a big fan of Flowerbomb but alas, no spare money as I'm trying to save for music lessons and desperately needed new clothes and shoes

BelleDameSansMerci · 10/06/2013 18:38

Itching to try all those now Frugal

I have this desire for the perfect scent; something that is "unique" enough that not everyone has it but must suit my rather acidic skin. Can't wear many mainstream scents - they all end up smelling like talc or some kind of scummy pond.

"OneLittle" could you try department stores for a sample? I'll see if I can get you one next time I'm on the prowl around a big enough House of Fraser or Selfridges or somewhere.

BelleDameSansMerci · 10/06/2013 18:39

Sorry, that should have been OneLittle. You can tell I've not been MNing as much as usual lately!

OneLittleLady · 10/06/2013 18:48

There's nowhere to get samples where I live, I've tried so if you wouldn't mind trying belle that'd be really nice of you Smile

ChocsAwayInMyGob · 10/06/2013 19:27

OneLittleLady. I have a perfume blog and will send you some samples. PM your address. You've come to the right place!

pocketandsweet · 10/06/2013 19:36

Does anyone have an recommendations for niche perfume houses to try in North America? We are relocating to Canada in the next couple of months.

OneLittleLady · 10/06/2013 19:41

Thanks choc that's very kind of you, pm'ing now Thanks

ChocsAwayInMyGob · 10/06/2013 20:34

pocket- try Ava Luxe. I think she is based on long Island and does some delightful scents that she makes herself.

Hello newbies. Another tuberose-hater here....Wink

SOTD was Chanel Sycomore. I was majorly tired this morning after a very early start to see DS off on a school trip, so I needed something brisk and bright.

I'm now trying another of my Acorelle samples, R de Rose. It's pretty, quite a sweet rose, and is lasting a little longer than some of their other stuff. I bought the sample set from M&S and they are all lovely, but some of them have fizzled out before I even get into the car in the morning. I can't be doing with short-lived fragrances.

FrugalFashionista · 11/06/2013 07:21

Pocket
Slumberhouse
Sonoma Scent Studio
Aftelier
Antonia's Flowers
possibly also Tocca
And these are lovely sample stores for you:
Surrender to Chance, Luckyscent, The Posh Peasant

Good luck with the big move! I've relocated there several times... (and always eventually returned - but love it there and will probably be there again sooner or later)

Going to have another day with Ch 5 EDP...

FrugalFashionista · 11/06/2013 07:23

Oh and Chocs please share a link to your perfume blog!

FrugalFashionista · 11/06/2013 08:32

Change of plans: have just received a lovely DHL package today from First in Fragrance

  • A FB of Tauer's Noontide Petals (the aldehydic rose) (if you are in the UK, samples and FBs here).
  • 3 samples (Bois d'Ascese and Cuir Velours by Naomi Goodsir; Blanc Violette by HdP - I found I really missed this violet Grin ) Basking in a glorious cloud of fizzy aldehydes and smoldering curls of incense. Yay!!! If someone likes Incense Rose, this is worth trying!

No more FBs and samples for me in quite a while... But purchasing the occasional FB is a good thing - I recently heard that Suendhaft, the German online perfume store that had some exquisite indie scents (I got some lovely things from them earlier this year), is no more Sad So while niche perfumes can be expensive, it is a good idea to support your favorite perfumers and shops once in a while...

I also suddenly remembered how much I like some Byredos - Pulp and Rose Noir in particular. Going to revisit them later.

pocketandsweet · 11/06/2013 10:49

thanks Frugal. I will check them out after the dust clears from moving! I'm west coast so let me know if you are headed that way.

CointreauVersial · 11/06/2013 13:17

I'm trying Tom Ford Sahara Noir today. The DDs recoiled in horror.

It is hugely incense-y, there's no other way of describing it. It has softened up now, and some of the sweeter amber notes are coming through.

BelleDameSansMerci · 11/06/2013 15:15

My SOTD is Flowerbomb... Thought I'd give it another go. Not sure if my red eyes are my contact lenses, a bit of hayfever or the perfume.

I'm intrigued by violet perfumes. Like the idea of a dark violet scent, if that makes sense?

ToysRLuv · 11/06/2013 20:53

SOTD: Tangeri by Keiko Mecheri. Cardamom with powdered, smooth wood in the background. It was in my mixed bag of samples. Wasn't marked, but fairly easy to pin down by the prominent cardamom note. I'm still a bit proud of my detective work Grin

Have you got your samples yet, Fuckit? I'm curious to hear about all those musks Smile

ToysRLuv · 11/06/2013 20:58

Belle: have you tried Tom Ford's Black Violet or Serge Lutens' De Profundis? I've never tried either, but they sound like they could be what you're looking for. I'm sure someone more in the know will come along soon..

HarumScarum · 11/06/2013 21:22

SOTD Blanc Violette (Histoires de Parfums). I like it but it's a bit powdery for me. It doesn't have the charm of the Houbigant violet. Nice but nothing special.

OneLittleLady, you are next on the round of violet perfumes so I will post next week some time and let you know when I have done so (and not be as rubbish as I was last time I was posting you something).

I am quite interested by how similar many of these violets are. I wonder if it's such a distinctive note that it is hard to do something different with it. Interested in Toys' recommendations for a darker violet scent and will investigate.

HarumScarum · 11/06/2013 21:23

Also, sorry it is taking me such an age to test them all. I have been having a massive allergic reaction to a change of washing powder so had to steer clear of perfume for a while as I have been covered in ITCH.

MrsSchadenfreude · 11/06/2013 22:12

I had another squirt of Chergui in Sephora on Saturday, which I do quite like, but not enough to buy. Also tried Fille en Aiguilles, which lasted all of about 30 minutes.

I cannot bear Tuberose either.

BelleDameSansMerci · 11/06/2013 22:32

I think I'll try to find a tester of the Black Violet. I do like Tom Ford perfumes but they are cripplingly expensive for "trying". I am a nightmare for buying perfume based on what I've read about it rather than actually trying it...
