Which items of clothing do you think scream 'tourist' when abroad?

Inspired by an earlier thread re capsule wardrobes and holiday packing, DonaAna commented on tourists who visit town in Italy where she lives being obvious as they wear Maxi dresses, when the Italians would wear a knee length dress.

What items do you think identify tourists/holidaymakers? To me, it is the knee length shorts in bright colours, bum bags or similar, socks worn with sandals...........

TomDudgeon · 04/04/2013 19:40

Sorry that was crapply asked
I was basically meaning you might be able to pull them off if you are anything but the whitest white (or blue like I am)

MisterUdagawa · 04/04/2013 19:42

but I would never wear out in a town for eg - that is the difference. BEach wear or whatever

wanderings · 04/04/2013 19:42

Being in trainers without socks, does that make you "touristy"? I'm sure I've seen locals do it in many warm European places.

MisterUdagawa · 04/04/2013 19:42

lol at Sir Grin

MrsCampbellBlack · 04/04/2013 19:45

I am 5ft dead and still dare to wear maxis.

MissBeehivingUnderTheMistletoe · 04/04/2013 19:45

Have you got a link to the shorts?

MrsCampbellBlack · 04/04/2013 19:49

I know I fancy them too

mewkins · 04/04/2013 20:03

But I don't understand! !!! Is the point supposed to be that you go on holiday cunningly disguised as a local??? To what end? Surely your skin colour, hair style colour, fact you have to use hand gestures to order so much as a glass of coke, squinting endlessly at maps etc would mark you out as a 'tourist' within about two minutes of stepping off the plane.
Tourists will always look different because what is 'fashionable' at the time differs from country to country. Also, presumably most go on holiday to do and see stuff, not to blend in. This pesky need to explore means shoes you can walk in, clothss for all weathers, rucksacks or large bags, taking your sweaty kids and husband with you etc.
No amount of wearing neutrals and stylish footwear is going to disguise the fact that you are indeed a tourist.

(Also it's nice to wear casual summer stuff when on holiday. It just is.)

MisterUdagawa · 04/04/2013 20:03

Oh they're only marks. Was looking for the limited collection geometric ones but they're sold out.

MisterUdagawa · 04/04/2013 20:05

i thought this thread was about criminal fashion mistakes committed abroad, but half of the items listed are not bad.i wear denim cut-offs to the beach with bikini top and gold havaianas, and i wear maxi dresses with embellished sandals.
i come from the mediterranean region and i can a sure you that many of the touristy destinations brits favor are not stylish at all!so any stylish people you see are from the big cities.

MrsCampbellBlack · 04/04/2013 20:29

Indeed Santamaria - the italians I met in the supermarkets in Tuscany - well you know, I think I was better dressed in my denim mini and gold sandals Wink

Annunziata · 04/04/2013 20:31

I love guessing what country someone is from Blush

Nasty, ill-fitting t-shirts and their skin gives British people away.

Sometimes their shoes. But Germans wear sensible shoes too.

MrsCampbellBlack · 04/04/2013 20:36

You see I always get a spray tan before I leave these shores [compounds tourist stereotype]

MissBeehivingUnderTheMistletoe · 04/04/2013 20:40

I love counting the boob jobs round the pool. Grin

Annunziata · 04/04/2013 20:41

The best game is spotting the tourist driver (especially in Sicily Grin)
