Which items of clothing do you think scream 'tourist' when abroad?

Inspired by an earlier thread re capsule wardrobes and holiday packing, DonaAna commented on tourists who visit town in Italy where she lives being obvious as they wear Maxi dresses, when the Italians would wear a knee length dress.

What items do you think identify tourists/holidaymakers? To me, it is the knee length shorts in bright colours, bum bags or similar, socks worn with sandals...........

A "sensible" bag such as this, designed to hold maps from three holidays ago, lipstick, a "wee hairbrush", tissues and other essentials. Note the array of different compartments, designed to bamboozle pickpockets and also ensure you will never find anything important quickly.

Comfortable shoes like these stunning examples. Because you know, you can walk around Belfast in heels all day long, but as soon as you leave the province walking further than 50 yards necessitates wearing hideous quasi-stylish trainers.

A waterproof coat, with a hood. This is only for "Staycations" because it never rains outside the British Isles.

Boob Tubes. No one who lives in a warm country feels the need to expose that much flesh day-to-day.

My Mum has all three of those links- I'd like to thank her for helping me spot fellow tourists a mile off.

BellaVita · 04/04/2013 14:08

God yes the socks/sandals combo.

LIZS · 04/04/2013 14:10

loose, oversized vest tops with dodgy slogans, long shorts worn on hip exposing builder's bum or boxer waistband, flipflops, inappropriate clothing for churches and temples

joiemecconue · 04/04/2013 14:14

French tourists are easy to spot in UK and often funny, mum dad and two immaculately behaved children all in matching waterproof capes. I like guessing nationalities at airports.

Gregssausageroll · 04/04/2013 14:16

Football tops. I just don't understand why anyone wears these when it is not football day. Dreadful

ujjayi · 04/04/2013 14:37

Football shirts
Insufficient bra support beneath strappy tops - usually accompanied with a lovely deep red "tan" on chest/shoulders
Those bloody awful black or beige fabric sandals with velcro fastenings: a bit like peep toe walking boots!
Evening attire of High heels and totally overdressed in "new best clothes".
Polyester maxis in the height of the mediterranean summer (conversely, light cotton maxis are perfectly acceptable)
Going to beach bar/taverna without a shirt or beach cover-up. I do not want to ruin my lunch being faced with someone's sweaty torso on the next table.
Hideous amounts of make up......even on the beach.

When I was abroad last year, I found that Brits stood out a mile because of the amount of tattoos.
I have nothing against tattoos, but multiple tattoos did seem to be a very British thing

HazleNutt · 04/04/2013 14:44

Bum bags. Would anyody ever wear one when walking around in their own town? Unlikely. But go abroad and for some reason they seem like a totally acceptable solution.

Mrsrobertduvall · 04/04/2013 14:51

Short legged Men at the airport wearing cut off trousers and athletic style shoes/trainers, spanking new, and destined never to be worn for a sport.

Multicoloured handbags from Monsoon which clash horribly with everything.

LadyMountbatten · 04/04/2013 15:00

Agree with cargo shorts. Ew

BigRedBox · 04/04/2013 15:12

35 yr old men in shorts that fitted when they were 18.

Def dolled up for going out at night for egg and chips with a pint of lager.

Women in swimsuits being very self-conscious. IME regardless of size locals just brazen it out in a bikini and look miles better.

santamarianovella · 04/04/2013 16:05

mrscampbell i love maxi dresses, and always wear them when im on holiday, and even here when the weather permits.they are certainly not touristy
i agree with not wanting to dress like the locals.many of the places we visited favor the muscle tee and very short shorts look, specially the men. i cant imagine DH dressing like that Grin.

ShatnersBassoon · 04/04/2013 16:14

Old men in Bri-Nylon shirts, unbuttoned to the navel and paired with Donnay swimming shorts.

Allthingspretty · 04/04/2013 16:19

Capri pants in bright patterns or flowers

Allthingspretty · 04/04/2013 16:20

Sandles that are hold pleather or leather

Allthingspretty · 04/04/2013 16:21

I meant gold obviously

Bonsoir · 04/04/2013 16:22

Tankinis

LadyMountbatten · 04/04/2013 16:24

I would add "fussy clothing"

MrsCampbellBlack · 04/04/2013 16:31

Tankinis are the work of the devil - the most unflattering swimwear known to man.

I love metallic sandals though.

HazleNutt · 04/04/2013 16:39

Tankinins and swim suits for sunbathing on the beach - uniquely British thing, everybody else wears bikinis, no matter what size or how wobbly.

RedPencils · 04/04/2013 16:43

When we went to Florida we could spot the Brit families from 20 paces as at least one member of the family was wearing something from Next. Or marks and spencer. (Including us).

flowery · 04/04/2013 16:46

I'm intrigued as to how a manicure or nail art makes someone look like a tourist Confused

But I'd go for the comfy shoes and sensible bag.

People with sunburn. If you are white wear fucking sunscreen that's stronger than SPF 30 ffs.

Stopping dead in the middle of the street to discuss what to do next.

cannotbebothered · 04/04/2013 17:10

Flowery, it's only the Brits that have interesting art/jewelled nails. Germans/dutch/Italians/Spanish don't.
French manicures do seem to be getting a little more popular here in Spain.
