Which items of clothing do you think scream 'tourist' when abroad?

Inspired by an earlier thread re capsule wardrobes and holiday packing, DonaAna commented on tourists who visit town in Italy where she lives being obvious as they wear Maxi dresses, when the Italians would wear a knee length dress.

What items do you think identify tourists/holidaymakers? To me, it is the knee length shorts in bright colours, bum bags or similar, socks worn with sandals...........

I began to feel bit better because I haven't got any neon cut-offs and don't fancy any phew. THEN some bugger posted a photo of those M&S shorts and I've got some very similar from Next! Oh the shame.

MrsCB I don't get a spray tan Grin only 'cause I end up looking like I need a good wash

MissBeehivingUnderTheMistletoe · 04/04/2013 20:59

If I didn't have a spray tan I would frighten the natives and spend the first week wailing about my pasty skin and ignoring the DCs.

CockBollocks · 04/04/2013 22:08

I have just bought 2 playsuits for my holiday in Florida - very unlikely to wear them here!!

Do I win?

Gingefringe · 04/04/2013 23:19

A big fat arse!

PretzelTime · 04/04/2013 23:39

PenelopePortrait · 05/04/2013 13:01

I need help. I've just bought a linen shirt from M&S - somebody stop me!

Tourists to London:

  • Sensible walking shoes
  • Backpacks
  • Tons of camera equipment
  • Hugely overstuffed Primark bags (tourists are obsessed with the place. I don't get it)

British tourists in sunny countries:

  • Being SUPER pale on the beach, so much so that you look like a corpse in comparison to other people (new arrivals)
  • being massively sunburnt (from end of day 1 of holiday onwards, or 15 minutes into holiday, depending on how sensitive ones skin is)
  • barely worn summer clothes that were fashionable about 10 years ago, but haven't been updated as there's no reason (it's not their fault, it's British weather)
  • dressing like a hippy
Absy · 05/04/2013 13:12

On the last one - that was me, until a (stupidly recent) revelation that being on holiday does not mean that I need to dress like a homeless hippy in special "holiday clothes" but can wear normal stuff.

Bunbaker · 05/04/2013 16:48

"barely worn summer clothes that were fashionable about 10 years ago"

Grin I have a dress that I bought in 1995 and still take on holiday
noddyholder · 05/04/2013 16:52

I sometimes find myself dressing like a hippy for no real reason Thos epink shorts? Whats wrong with those

Absy · 05/04/2013 16:52

Me too Grin I have a box of clothes under the bed which I literally only wear for two weeks a year (it's too cold here), and have done so for years. For one particular top I bought in 2008, I cannot remember the last time I wore it in the UK.

CambridgeBlue · 06/04/2013 08:39

I love having 'holiday clothes' - it makes our week in a British seaside town that little bit more exciting. I am aware it's not a good idea though, and that 'just clothes, clothes that you would wear at home' is the way forward, but I have very little need for strappy sundresses or wedge sandals in my day to day life so it's nice to have the chance to wear them once a year.

SquidgyMummy · 06/04/2013 08:51

White linen

EggbertShellyandYoko · 06/04/2013 12:40

Very busy patterns & very bright coloured dresses, minimal clothing (so as to maximise tanning/burning opportunities) where people are wandering around barely dressed.

But some of it is just down to appropriateness, ok to be wearing strappy tops and bikini bottoms/mini shorts on the beach, but is it a good look when visiting a town or on the tourist trip where you go and visit a church?

agree - wide legged linen trousers.

English wobblers

Bunbaker · 06/04/2013 13:49

I like wide leg linen trousers and will continue to wear them.

LadyMountbatten · 06/04/2013 13:54

you look gorjaws in them

TomDudgeon · 06/04/2013 14:38

Stands by bunbaker. Me too

PenelopePortrait · 06/04/2013 15:37

I'm with bunbaker too Smile

Trills · 06/04/2013 17:13

I can never find wide legged linen trousers in the right combination of :
length
colour
fitting and not going baggy

But if I could I would wear them to work when it's hot.

scarlet76 · 06/04/2013 17:48

I think DH and I 'blend in' well when on holiday in Europe - Less so when travelling with v blonde DC though! I do think how much of a tourist you look is down to physical characteristics as well as clothes.

I don't have a specific holiday wardrobe. For the beach I stick to Havaianas, Denim knee shorts, black bikini / swimsuit, Plain Ts, cotton dresses and large sunglasses.

For sightseeing, cotton dresses, white slim jeans, vests, leather sandals, supergas, large sunglasses and leather shopper.

The main thing surely is we enjoy our hols!!

TomDudgeon · 08/04/2013 12:35

I'm wearing my black linen trousers today as a deliberate rebellion against this thread
