Which items of clothing do you think scream 'tourist' when abroad?

Inspired by an earlier thread re capsule wardrobes and holiday packing, DonaAna commented on tourists who visit town in Italy where she lives being obvious as they wear Maxi dresses, when the Italians would wear a knee length dress.

What items do you think identify tourists/holidaymakers? To me, it is the knee length shorts in bright colours, bum bags or similar, socks worn with sandals...........

Halter neck style, strappy high heel sandals and sunburn. ie discomfort.

noddyholder · 04/04/2013 17:11

Ironed things in bright colours

flowery · 04/04/2013 17:15

Oh I see, thank you. :)

MabelsBelles · 04/04/2013 17:17

White linen trousers, cheap ones that are slightly baggy and thin enough to see your pants through.

MrsCampbellBlack · 04/04/2013 17:18

I love a halterneck and also iron everything! I am clearly a tourist Wink

noddyholder · 04/04/2013 17:19

I like gold sandals too! Most 'locals' don't do make up either

ChasingStaplers · 04/04/2013 17:20

Linen, especially white linen trousers.

I wear half these things in the summer at weekends when in my home town, though.
Mybe not half, but quite a lot.

FromGirders · 04/04/2013 17:24

Oh hell.
I'm going for my first ever "abroad holiday" in October. What on earth should I be planning to wear?

Bunbaker · 04/04/2013 17:24

I am getting seriously worried now Grin

I wear comfy shoes when exploring - last year we went to Pompeii and strappy sandals or flip flops were too impractical.

I have just bought some knee length tailored shorts because my thighs aren't suitable for anything shorter these days.

I am also on the look out for a smallish and stylish cross body handbag for when we are out exploring. Has anyone got any suggestions?

LIZS · 04/04/2013 17:31

new white trainers

Bunbaker · 04/04/2013 17:33

I know this is going to offend a few, but when we were in Croatia the other year pretty much all of the heavily overweight people were British.

That would be layers of vest tops, jeans and hiking boots.
Good lord, I must look like a tourist while at work! :o

MrsCampbellBlack · 04/04/2013 17:41

Look when you're on holiday you are a tourist.

So where what you want and you feel good in and can walk in Smile

TSSDNCOP · 04/04/2013 17:42

Going to an overseas wedding dressed as you would for a wedding in the UK.

I have seen wedding parties in kilts in Cyprus in 40 degrees.

TSSDNCOP · 04/04/2013 17:44

And last year the girls were wearing bikini tops with giant fugly surf shorts.

Which looks fucking stupid by the pool.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 04/04/2013 17:52

Jewelled flip-flops
Strapless dresses with shirring elastic tops -usually worn by women who really should wear something supportive

White linen-mix trousers and 'attractive' thongs

You can take the girl out of Essex but you can't take Essex out of the girl Blush

MissBeehivingUnderTheMistletoe · 04/04/2013 17:56

I wear maxis, with gold sandals in the UK and on holiday, so shoot me Grin

bonzo77 · 04/04/2013 17:58

I love my bum bag Blush. So handy. Keeps my hands free and my purse handy.

MrsCampbellBlack · 04/04/2013 18:03

Shares a holiday drink with MissBeehiving whilst admiring our bling sandals and bright pedicures Wink

Bunbaker · 04/04/2013 18:03

I must admit that I find bum bags so handy and practical, especially when you are on holiday in places that have a pickpocket problem.

I wore one round Florence and actually saw pickpockets at work. I even attached mine to my clothes with a couple of of safety pins in case they tried to cut the straps. I don't care that they aren't stylish.

SirChenjin · 04/04/2013 18:04

I am officially middle aged now - in planning for our holiday to Germany in the summer I bought a pair of these beauties in white from Aldi

DH said that when he saw his wife trying on a pair of shoes in the aisles of Aldi he knew we'd reached That Time in our life. Personally I think they look very stylish, practical, a bit Ecco-ish and quite Continental, but the teen DCs looked like this Shock when I showed them my new shoes.

PollyEthelEileen · 04/04/2013 18:06

My husband's calf-length black socks with baggy shorts. Shock Blush

MarshaBrady · 04/04/2013 18:08

I should have put - of the boob hoiking variety in my answer.

I rather like the one maxi dress I have.
