Budding perfumistas walk this way- Part 2 of the Worst Perfumes ever

As the first thread is nearly full, I've set up Part 2

OP posts:
CointreauVersial · 15/11/2012 19:11

God, those horrid glass bottles in Body Shop. I think that's where my loathing of patchouli comes from (all the more surprising now I find it's one of the notes in lovely Coromandel Grin).

By the way, if you know anyone who's travelling via Gatwick in the near future, the Duty Free shop at the South Terminal (which is ginormous) has a Chanel boutique selling Les Exclusifs. A monster bottle of Coromandel can be yours for £75.

BOFingSanta · 15/11/2012 19:22

NO WAY Shock

CointreauVersial · 15/11/2012 19:26

Yes, it's chuffing pricy. Which is why I just ordered a 10ml decant from Surrender to Chance.

onyx72 · 15/11/2012 19:31

Oh - Manifesto was the first perfume that I fell in love with. I'd love to get my hands on some more.

otchayaniye · 15/11/2012 20:11

my bottle of montale black aoud came today. it is skank juice. in a good way. extraordinary thing and a good way into arabic perfumerie ( wallet's not ready for an amouage assault)

TheBolter · 15/11/2012 20:18

Marking place

I like rose perfumes - eternity, Tresor and Paris, not the most sophisticated and a bit old school I know but for day to day wear they are quite lovely. I also like chypres such as Calvin Klein's Truth which I bought on Amazon for something ridiculous like £15 earlier this year.

Evening wear I prefer Coco and also the now discontinued Feminite du Bois by Shiseido which is taking me ages to get through as I keep getting side tracked by others, such as Samsara. I've recently got massively into Dune by Dior, it's quite complex and seems to manage to strike a balance between fresh sea air and warm amber on its dry down. I also quite like Serge Lutens scents, such as his new take on Feminite (forgotten its name but I had a sample once and liked it) and also Daim Blond, although I suddenly started to react badly to it during pregnancy.

I'd love to get my hands on some Byzantium by Rochas (gotta love those big eighties/early nineties days of the supermodel scents!) so if anyone knows where I could track some down I'd be v interested.

TheBolter · 15/11/2012 20:19

Ooo, and OceANUS reminds me of My strumpet days at university. Just the memory of it brings me back to having a guilt laden hangover.

TheBolter · 15/11/2012 20:22

Like goat's cheese I WISH I could love Mitsouko but every time I smell it I want to heave. I feel as if I'm missing something though because to hear the accolades heaped upon it, it is the height of refinement and sophistication. Unfortunately it knows i just don't cut it, so it hates me.

coffeeinbed · 15/11/2012 20:32

Yes, FeminitÄ— has been reformulated, but apparently it's in keeping with the original ideas. Hmm
I miss the parfum though, the new one is only Eau de Parfum.
I still have some of my old stash, bought when John Lewis was selling it half-price.
Dior Dolce Vita is close to it.
If you like Dune, try Parfum des Mervelles.

TheBolter · 15/11/2012 20:36

Thanks coffee. I too bought it HP in John Lewis (I think we may have met on a thread before?!) did you say once that the 'reconfigured' version isn't as nice?

Will look into Dolce Vita and Mervelles. Cheers.

kiwigirl42 · 15/11/2012 20:40

I love the sound of Mitsouko but, blood hell, it almost knocked me down

coffeeinbed · 15/11/2012 20:43

I think we had a similar conversation.
I found the new FeminitÄ— somehow thin. I was so happy when they brought it back, but then it was different, so that was disappointing, even though Serge Lutens, the creator himself said it was what he wanted. Who cares about him..
It's not what I wanted...

TheBolter · 15/11/2012 21:21

Coffee I've just been reading some reviews on it on Escentual, and the reviewers seem to like it because it's soft and feminine. Harrumph. I like the original because it has 'fuck me' all over it. Soft and feminine indeed... Still I might ask dh to buy me some for Xmas!

DonaAna · 16/11/2012 08:20

The reason why there were so many aquatic scents back then was that perfumers had finally figured out how to produce marine smells (they had invented a molecule called Calone). It was a hot novelty and every perfume house wanted to offer something like that.

Angel popularizes ethylmaltol and made candy floss aromas the new big thing everyone wanted to copy.

I'm taking a short break in Tuscany. The air here smells so good (wood smoke, conifers, lavender, cold stone walls) that no perfume is necessary. But the basenote of Chanel No. 19 (about 13 hours after application!) has exactly the same feel of expanses of rolling meadows and cottony clouds that can be experienced in the heart of Annick Goutal's Eau du Sud and Vero Profumo's new Mito.

ThatsNice · 16/11/2012 08:29

Good morning ladies (do we have any gents amongst us?)
I'm giving my Chanel no 19 sample another go today. Really want to love it, powder scent and all, so persevering with it Smile

ThatsNice · 16/11/2012 08:30

I must admit DonaAna one of my favourites back then was cool water woman. Takes me right back to a Tenerife holiday around that time. Happy days Smile

kiwigirl42 · 16/11/2012 08:53

I'm wearing Mandorlo di Sicilia with a bit of Lipstick Rose today. It needs a bit of rose but not sure Lipstick Rose is the right one. I love mixing perfumes.

I noticed that someone is selling decants of Coromandel on ebay plus quite a few other perfumes. just search for decants under fragrance.
It was banned on ebay so good they've started again.

kiwigirl42 · 16/11/2012 08:54

theBolter you can buy BYZANTINE BY ROCHAS on ebay among other places.

coffeeinbed · 16/11/2012 09:40

Nothing on yet - working and I try not to wear perfume on a job, but it will be Feminité du Bois Extrait later.

MooMinCow · 16/11/2012 11:24

Morning!

My StoC samples finally arrived Smile

Wore Diptyque 34 Blvd St Germain yesterday (lush, warm spicy) but didn't seem to last that long Sad. Apparently they do it as a 'solid' perfume - anyone tried them? Does the scent last longer on the skin?

Chanel Coromandel today. Reminds me of incense and temples. I can imagine it would smell lovely when it lingers on clothes/scarves.

BOFingSanta · 16/11/2012 11:51

Ooh, I have made a new discovery!

I have it on good authority (well, fragrantia reviewers Grin) that lovers of Tom Ford's Tuscan Leather will be pleasantly surprised by (and may even prefer) the much less pricey newly released niche scent by Dueto, Golden Boy. They have free shipping to the UK from their online store, some other very interesting scents in the range, and a Facebook page from which it would appear they are happy to send samples if you message them.

They are a newish house, and it looks like they use very high quality ingredients. Trying to appeal to a young urban crowd, by the look of it. Check them out- at $100ish for 100ml EDP, I think it's worth a punt if you like the samples.

BOFingSanta · 16/11/2012 19:00

Did I kill the thread? Sad

shoeprincess2 · 16/11/2012 19:12

I hope not. It's keeping me going through maternity leave! I am loving all the posts and getting the opportunity to learn about niche fragrances. I was talking to my mum about what her "go to" notes are. She said she loves light florals, but not the loud white ones, like jasmine and tuberose. No Carnal Flower for her then Smile

OP posts:
ThatsNice · 16/11/2012 19:15

Not at all Smile
I am enjoying a drop of today's new sample Ninfeo mio. Wasn't sure when I took the top off (very sharp) but is warming to be really lovely on me, so thank you girls for yet another lovely fragrance I'd never have discovered otherwise Smile

BOFingSanta · 16/11/2012 19:21

I made the mistake of letting my mum sniff my sample of Chanel No22 today. She is now circling it like a shark and offering to go halves on a bottle: I CAN'T let my mum wear the same perfume as me!
