Budding perfumistas walk this way- Part 2 of the Worst Perfumes ever

As the first thread is nearly full, I've set up Part 2

I think that sounds like good advice Dona , I will try to avoid purchasing a full bottle until I know I love it and get more samples. I also find I get bored or go off perfumes regularly as well, so even though I might use a full bottle of something I stick with the smaller bottle, and there are not many perfumes that I love enough to re-purchase once the bottle is empty. My box holds about 15/16 50ml bottles, which I think is a good number to stick to to allow me to have enough to choose from for different occasions/moods/weather/seasons etc and my one in one out rule stops me spending too much.

Have tried Tuscan Leather a few times now and love it, so soft like suede and it always seems to get better towards the end of the day as if it combines with my skin to become muskier and more leathery and more daring.

DonaAna · 21/01/2013 07:39

Haber I should really try Fireside Intense. Love smoke.

SOTD: Tubereuse Animale by Histoires de Parfums. Very close to Loretta but more petrol fumes and less grape juice. Lovely to wear on a really disgusting day (rainy, gray, humid).

coffeeinbed · 21/01/2013 09:21

I'm off into the snow and cold.
Wearing Julliette's Not a perfume today - needed something comforting, and not too silage-y.

Haberdashery · 21/01/2013 17:20

You definitely would need to like smoke, DonaAna! It's the most realistically bonfirey thing I have ever smelt. Waiting for my Knize 10 impatiently. I really want to try it - have been reading reviews.

SOTD was L'Air du Temps. I find it's good for making me get things done. It is a very brisk smell.

CointreauVersial · 21/01/2013 18:23

I have Knize Ten on order too (how do you pronounce it, btw? Knees? Nyes? Ker-nit-zer?).

SOTD is L'Artisan Tea for Two on my left wrist, and Serge Lutens Un Bois Vanille on the right, because I wanted to compare them. Tea for Two is more smoky-leathery, whereas the SL is much more sweet. Both lovely, though.

aJumpedUpPantryBoy · 21/01/2013 18:39

I love Un Bois Vanille - it is sweet, but I don't find it too sickly (I know som people do)

Wearing Fleur D'Oranger today though

Haberdashery · 21/01/2013 22:23

No idea re pronunciation! I suppose we should find out in case someone asks what divine scent we are wearing? It looks like it ought to be Nyes but I presume it's not English which would make that wrong.

Tea for Two sounds good.

bottleofbeer · 21/01/2013 23:00

Can anybody explain to me why I hate Angel but love Coromandel? because they actually remind me of each other.

Enquiring minds wanna know!

CointreauVersial · 21/01/2013 23:05

I don't know, bottle.

I love Coromandel, even though it contains patchouli, which I hate.

bottleofbeer · 21/01/2013 23:22

I'm a perfume whore, I buy perfume over clothes/shoes/handbags any day but I'd never thought about why I like the ones I do or if they've got any common denominators.

I usually hate anything sweet (Kenzo flowers makes me baulk) but really like Alien and I don't think they're a million miles apart.

One I do really like that's really inexpensive is Intimately Beckham. I often get appreciative sniffs and am asked what I'm wearing but I think it's quite like CK Contradiction which I HATED.

I like the pink DKNY be delicious but don't like Acqua Di giolia - yet they're so similar it's hard to tell them apart. All I know is I wear one and like it but the other is just...meh.

DonaAna · 22/01/2013 06:19

Cointreau it's a germanized Slavic name (Czech?) so pronounce like in German - can't really do phonics but Knee-tse?

Feel another cold coming on so probably perfume free today.

Perfumes can be nearly the same, but sometimes just one 'off' aromachemical makes it unwearable for me. Common offenders: a stinky/fabric softener musk; calone (the melon aquatic note); synthetic cedar created using an overdose of Iso E Super, some of the queasier synthetic sandalwoods. And then there are hundreds of aromachemicals that I cannot identify.
A friend smells an off note in nearly all Duchaufours.

IsabelleRinging · 22/01/2013 07:36

Hi bottle, I hate Kenzo Flower too but I don't know why as it is a woody sort of floral which I usually like.

shoeprincess2 · 22/01/2013 09:40

I'm the same with Kenzo Flower- not keen at all, yet it should be one that I like based on the fragrance family that I normally buy from. Bottle- yep, fragrances over anything else. I'd rather buy 10 samples of some nice perfumes than buy a top that will get worn once and then put away!

Today I am wearing Lonestar Memories (thanks Pudden). Just gorgeous. I am a bit twitchy at the moment as quite a few things I have ordered haven't arrived. I am hoping they are just in the backlog caused by the snow and bad weather. I am itching to test the Le Labo Patchouli 24.

Any more sample testing for anyone?

bottleofbeer · 22/01/2013 09:54

When I was a kid my auntie had worked in a department store - she once gave me a huge case of samples. Must have been 50+ 10ml bottles in it.

Ohhh, I was in Heaven. Best present I've ever had! this was the 80s (maybe early 90s) and I lurved the likes of Paris but I've definitely lost my liking for sweet perfumes as I've got older. In fact, most absolutely repel me which is why it's odd that I really do like Alien. There must be something in it that offsets the sweetness. I used to love D&G red but again, really don't like it now. I think the first ever bottle of 'real' perfume I ever had was Samsara (which again, I loved but don't like now). Remember Tribe? haaha oh gawd I can smell it now and it's revolting!

My favourite every day perfumes are Flowerbomb and Chance (and yes I realise all of these are very mainstream) but I do have a bottle of Coromandel (was in NYC last year) which I use very sparingly because 1) even as an eau de toilette it can be very overpowering if you use too much 2) it's too bloody expensive and hard to get hold of! I would go as far as to say stick with the EDT's with Chanel because the parfums can in general be overpowering. A Chanel EDT is as long lasting and has as good a sillage as most other brand's parfums. You don't actually need to buy the parfum.

YouOldSlag · 22/01/2013 10:02

Lonestar Memories was awful on me but great on DH.

shoeprincess2 · 22/01/2013 10:19

YouOldSlag- I definitely edge towards the more masculine scents. I even prefer a chunkier watch than something delicate Smile. I keep sniffing the Lonestar... It is probably one that I would buy as a full bottle.

Bottle- love Coromandel, as only have about 3 ml left from a decant. Again, probably would consider a full bottle of this.

OP posts:
bottleofbeer · 22/01/2013 10:49

How big was your decant?

I checked that Stc out and they do a 30ml which I compared one of my 30ml bottles and it's a decent size.

If you were prepared to spend £200 on a full bottle, instead you'd have a good sized decant and lots of money left over for others :)

shoeprincess2 · 22/01/2013 11:13

An MNer sent me about a 7ml decant, in exchange for a perfume. Yes, I did think about buying a 30 ml decant, but I quite fancy the bottle as well, to adorn my dressing table...

Haberdashery · 22/01/2013 11:15

I got another little parcel of samples today! Yay!

Currently testing L'Air du Desert Marocain which I adore. I think it's gorgeous - an absolute masterpiece. I don't think there's a Tauer I've tried yet that I wouldn't like to have at least a hefty decant of. I also have here Orange Star, Une Rose Chyprée and a freebie of Hilde Soliani CiocoRosissimo which sounds intriguing.

bottleofbeer · 22/01/2013 11:17

Look at it this way, it looks like old lady perfume.

It wouldn't even look that good Grin

shoeprincess2 · 22/01/2013 11:27

Ooooh lovely haberd. The ciocorosissimo smells like frys turkish delight. I was a bit "what?" at first, but it really grew on me. I wore it on Saturday. A gourmand that really is different from the norm. Let me know what une rose chypree smells like- it is one of the few Tauers that I haven't tried. L'air is stunning, isn't it? I guess you ordered from Scent & Sensibility? I love how Ronny puts an extra sample in for you, as you get to try something that you probably would not have normally gone for.

Bottle- it is a lot to pay for the Coromandel isn't it? Maybe L should be sensible and just order a 30 ml decant...

OP posts:
bottleofbeer · 22/01/2013 11:29

It is!

I only bought it because I was on holiday with money to spend. Having said that I do love the perfume so much that I would buy it again. But definitely I'd go for a decant.

Haberdashery · 22/01/2013 11:31

I will definitely report back. Ciocorosissimo sounds really interesting. Yes, Scents and Sensibility. I got Reverie au Jardin last time which was a lovely surprise.

L'Air du Desert just gets better and better as it develops. Really gorgeous. Rich and dry and dusty and luxurious.

bottleofbeer · 22/01/2013 11:42

I find a cheaper way to recreate the smell of a lot of mainstream perfumes these days is to simply smear yourself in costco cake.

HTH.

shoeprincess2 · 22/01/2013 11:43

It was through this thread that I discovered Tauer perfumes. I had never heard of them before but so glad I tried them out. Like you, there isn't a Tauer I dislike. Orange Star is beautiful too. I know a lot of Tauer's scents are challenging (Loretts for example), but love to buck the trend. If you get a chance, try Pentachord White.
