Why didn't you lot tell me about the wonders of setting lotion? Heh? Heh?

I have straight hair, totally and utterly straight, very fine and loads of it. No product has ever worked, everything either just vanishes in it or weighs it down and makes it even flatter and greasy looking. So why did nobody tell me about setting lotion?

Bugger! Was your hair absolutely bone dry when you let it out?

StellaAndFries · 11/09/2012 16:47

Yep I have Bettie Bangs, black and red at the moment. My hair looks a bit wild at the moment, in the future I need to put CurlFormers in more carefully and use a bit of serum when my hairs done as its gone quite frizzy. Will probably try again tomorrow or Friday :)

bleedingheart · 11/09/2012 16:52

Do you think this would work on naturally curly hair? To keep curls 'dressed and formed' rather than fuzzy by the end of the day?

MrsLettuce · 11/09/2012 17:20

No, no! Frizzy is a good sign - you just need to brush, brush, brush! look here, this lass knows her vintagey sets.

This thread has brought back memories of my childhood when my nana used to babysit on Saturday nights she would rag curl our hair ( I have 2 sisters ) for church next morning . I seem to remember that she would have a bowl of water with sugar dissolved in it , yes you are reading this correctly ! and a comb. She would dip the comb in the solution , comb it through the section of hair then do the rag curls. We used to wake up next morning with gorgeous bouncing ringlets. Can never remember having hard sticky hair which you would expect.

GeetTallBird · 12/09/2012 00:13

Have we seen or has MN discussed Caruso curling system, am intrigued...bit.ly/PaHdwh hope link works!

MrsBovary · 12/09/2012 00:14

Has anybody had success with using on long hair? I think I'd have achieved better results if I'd used more lotion.

I washed my hair, towel dried, applied the lotion, blow-dried, then used jumbo curling tongs to slightly wave.

Some of the waves have dropped out a little, but my hair still looks rather nice, bouncy almost, and has more wave (without the stiffness) than if I had used hairspray. I'll definitely try it again.

StellaAndFries · 12/09/2012 08:39

Yes my hair is long and it worked, I think I need to be a tad more liberal with the lotion next time. We're should be going out Saturday night so will probably try again and take more time getting it right :)

Pinot · 12/09/2012 09:47

ggirl :o I think I needed to use more. Or maybe my hair is too long for it? It literally did nowt. I put quite a lot (I thought!) on towel dried hair and dried it straight - looked the same as any other day. Bah. Lemme know how you get on! :)

ggirl · 12/09/2012 19:35

hmmm I'm pleased with the effect.

I was in a bit of a hurry ..but after I slopped some on I gave it a blast then BBH'd
Initailly looked no different really but the difference is that my hair still looks the same after a long day at work!

Normally , sweat/rain etc make it curl and look messy and springing up everywhere. Today for the first time it looks the same as it did when I left..so fab result for me!! Very pleased.

iwasyoungonce · 19/09/2012 16:57

Just wanted to say I have finally tried this (found it hard to get hold of setting lotion!) - but I'm really pleased with it!

I have long straight thick hair, which is bordering on wiry, and goes a bit bushy. This has left my hair looking quite sleek, even a whole day (and night's sleep) after blow drying/ straightening.

Will definitely continue to use it - thanks for the tip OP.

ggirl · 19/09/2012 17:05

hair is hard to brush with the setting lotion in it though...

MrsBovary · 19/09/2012 17:21

I was too liberal with the setting lotion the next time I used it. I had chalky hair and a white hairbrush. I think I've got it almost right now, and am converted, so thank you again, Mrs Lettuce.

ChicHappens · 20/09/2012 09:12

Tried it again and again and it reallllllllllllly doesn't suit my hair (fine, long). Maybe it's for thicker hair. For me, it just made it wiry and like ggirl said, hard to brush.

LtheWife · 21/09/2012 15:44

There's another old fashioned product that you'll like if you love setting lotion. Vitapointe, style with setting lotion, leave to dry, brush out and then rub a tiny amount of vitapointe between your hands and smooth over the hair. It will add shine and tame any fluffiness or frizziness caused by the brushing to create smooth, glossy curl and waves. It was a compulsory purchase when I did a vintage hair styling course and it's amazing stuff, much better than any serum I've ever tried.

Fluffycloudland77 · 21/09/2012 16:07

I find it better if I use it on wet hair, not rough dried and if I put it on with my hands not spray it on.

Pinot · 21/09/2012 16:20

Ooh I shall try Vitapointe!

brighthair · 21/09/2012 19:20

I used to use Vitapointe when I was a teen. Might have to try again

GeetTallBird · 24/09/2012 08:08

Do you mean mix the vitapointe with the setting lotion?

LtheWife · 24/09/2012 14:28

No, apply a tiny amount of vitapointe as the last step after drying and styling as a finishing touch to help smooth down any frizz and add a bit of shine.

ggirl · 24/09/2012 15:05

sadly no vitapointe to be found in my local boots or superdrug..will venture further at the weekend ..am sadly looking forward to trying this stuff
