Why didn't you lot tell me about the wonders of setting lotion? Heh? Heh?

I have straight hair, totally and utterly straight, very fine and loads of it. No product has ever worked, everything either just vanishes in it or weighs it down and makes it even flatter and greasy looking. So why did nobody tell me about setting lotion?

that's not the one I've got, but it is a setting lotion. there are loads about. The one I've got is a chemist own brand. I'm sure some are better than others but I've no idea what. They're all dirt cheap so I think I'll try a few but I've no complaints about this one.

Mine isn't eye-smarty and it doesn't smell flammable Shock just an old school product scent IYSWIM, I find the smell is gone pretty damn quick. Quicker than mousse, hairspray, wax and the like in any case.

Hairspary is highly flammable on or off hair...

I had my (straight, fine, doesn't take a curl) hair 'set' for a 1940s party - proper curlers and setting lotion. Was amazing - my hair looked fab, and stayed put perfectly for two days until I rather sadly washed it out....

MrsLettuce · 04/09/2012 16:14

Any old setting lotion will do. Honest. Think it's much of a muchness TBH.

funnypeculiar · 04/09/2012 16:15

And I didn't think it smelt much after the initial hit, so to speak. Although I was knee-deep in ginger beer and gin fairly soon after my 'set' Grin

Fluffycloudland77 · 04/09/2012 16:16

Dont say that Peggotty, some of us are still waiting for the rosehip oil to arrive in the post....

scripsi · 04/09/2012 16:19

rosehip oil you say Fluffy? I seem to have missed the memo?

StellaAndFries · 04/09/2012 16:40

Yes the old lady setting lotion is what is needed, my hairdresser mate did mine once and it looked lovely. I have these magic leverage rollers too so perhaps I should actually pick some lotion up and set my hair for Friday night :)

StellaAndFries · 04/09/2012 16:51

Oh and MrsLettuce what do you think to these babies for autumn? Snapped them up on eBay this morning. I now have my eye on a pair of genuine 1950's dead stock indigo workmens jeans, I may have to be nice to dp Grin

ImCoveredInBeeeees · 04/09/2012 17:24

Just dashed to Boots to get a bottle. Sounds just the job...

noddyholder · 04/09/2012 17:50

No doesn't affect eyes! Much better than mousse which is crunchy this really lasts and makes my hair quite shiny. It has a pointed nozzle so v easy

madmomma · 04/09/2012 21:04

thanks dame I've had a look at those in Sally's and they look like a jolly good idea. I am so lazy and cack-handed though. I yearn for something I can do in front of the tv without a mirror, in 5 mins flat

KatieMorag · 04/09/2012 21:10

Can soemone please recommend easy rollers to use with my newly acquired setting lotion?

KatieMorag · 04/09/2012 21:13

Sorry, should have explained that I don't want curl former to make ...em.. Curls. I just want root lift . I was promised it from the babyliss thingumybobs and they were a bloody waste of £35.so I'm expecting more this time

Virgil · 04/09/2012 21:17

Madmomma teeth are what is required. Take one very long rag strip, hold end in teeth and pull tight. Place the middle section of the rag at root of hair section. Wrap the hair around the rag then wrap the rag around the hair. Avoid doing more then ten unless you want to wake up with an Afro. Really easy, I have very long hair and can do mine in fifteen minutes.

Virgil · 04/09/2012 21:18

Katie try Velcro rollers (secured in place with a hair grip if necessary). Dead easy

Viperidae · 04/09/2012 21:20

Back in the late 70s, before they invented mousse, you used to get setting lotion spray. It was truly ace and i have mourned it for years!

Growlithe · 04/09/2012 21:22

I know its a daft question, but what do you actually do with setting lotion?

BettySwallocks2012 · 04/09/2012 21:30

^ this!!

Fluffycloudland77 · 04/09/2012 21:33

I dont know what to do with it either, do you spray it on or put it in your hands and rub it in?

Damp hair or dry?

Jamdoughnutfiend · 04/09/2012 21:34

I am also desperate to know what to do. I have poker straight wispy fine hair and dream of body and curls!

madmomma · 04/09/2012 21:37

ooh thanks virgil that's a super tip. How do you fasten the rag in place? should the knot end up at the scalp?

MrsLettuce · 04/09/2012 22:03

damn good find!

I put the setting lotion an a spray bottle, that helps I fine. Can't be pouting stuff about. So, yeah, I spray it om damp hair (all through and to roods) and blow dry with plenty of root fluffing and some upside downness. Am dying to get some curls going on though. Has taken me a few goes to curve my fringe without curling it IYSWIM so I know it makes my hair hold a curl.

Use velcro roller to sort me fringe out, they're great but I've not got enough to try a full 'do'. Am going to give pin curls a crack tonight though.

If I had one of those babyliss thingumies I think I' d spray the section a was about to, erm, 'big hair' Confused and the use as instructed. it'd have to work and the setting lotion would set the lift.

Don't use too much lotion or your hair goes heavy and dull.

Madmomma the knot goes at the bottom.

Hold end of rag that isn't in teeth out straight and spiral the hair around until you get to the end (make sure you leave enough to tie). Then hold the end of the spiralled hair with the hand that is holding the rag out straight. Take the other end of rag out of your teeth and with your free hand wrap the rag tightly in a spiral so that no hair is showing until you get down to the bottom. Then hopefully you have enough fabric left to tie in a knot. Your hair should then look like its mummified in the rag. Make sure the hair isn't too damp when you put it in or else when you unwrap it in the morning it will still be damp and won't have curled.

DarrellRivers · 04/09/2012 22:09

Now this sounds exciting
[and agrees re MN fad, there will be freakishly high sales of setting lotion]

Iwannamovenow · 04/09/2012 22:17

Would doing a sock bun work with it?
