New thread for chatting. Oh and swapping S&B tips.

Having a manic day here - INSET day at school and I have 7 kids (inc my 3) over for lunch. While also trying to "work from home" and talk to removal people.

The other thing about this wedding on Friday night is that it was full of the most boring people I have ever met. Including DP's boss and her husband, who is perfectly pleasant but @rse-clenchingly boring. I had to Drink in order to cope Grin Blush

MrsSchadenfreude · 29/04/2012 20:33

Yes, that's the main reason for me drinking at the constant round of cocktail parties I go to. Once you've exhausted "how long have you been in Paris/are you here with your family/schooling/French bureaucracy" and the other person contributes nothing further in the way of an exchange, I find myself heading for the bar or waiter for some more champagne, in order to get through the evening.

TheReturnOfStropperella · 29/04/2012 20:49

Forced the dcs to come for a walk up a hill in the pouring rain before lunch as they were clearly in need of fresh air. As there were no other people on the hill (funny, that), I cheered them on by dancing up the slope whilst singing. This caused them to run surprisingly fast, given the weather conditions. They then amused themselves by pushing each other into the deepest, muddiest puddles they could find (the sort where you could easily lose a welly) and seemed to enjoy it all more than the dog, who doesn't approve of rain or mud.

I then made the mistake of having half a bottle of cava with lunch which has left me with that meh Sunday evening feeling, probably aggravated by the nature of the current job. Dh has warned me off putting any details up about the job for legal reasons. Damn. Sorry. Let's just say it's not for the squeamish.

MrsS! Shmoozing the DD''s teachersShock Is this a normal occurrence in Paris?! I wish I taught at their schoolEnvy After the trifle thread the other day, I'd say go working class - it's the real mccoy! My favourite and best aunty used to make it with swiss roll and strawberry jelly, gallons of sherry and tinned fruit cocktail, custard and whipped cream with hundreds and thousands sprinkled on top.

DD in a strop - one of her oldest friends is now saying to stay for a sleepover after her party next Saturday, but I had already said she can have friends to sleepover here on Sunday.... AIBU to not want her to do 2 sleepovers in a row?!

motherinferior · 29/04/2012 20:58

YANBU.

fuck sod it, am going to add to this weekend's already appalling level of alcohol consumption.

Does MN keep going offline where you all are, or is it just my house?

It's been going on all day.

Not that I have been on MN all day Grin

TheReturnOfStropperella · 29/04/2012 21:40

BTM, YADNBU.

TheReturnOfStropperella · 29/04/2012 21:43

I meant about the sleepovers Grin

TheReturnOfStropperella · 29/04/2012 21:49

This is old, but I wondered if you have seen it: I showed it to dd last year to make a point. A point which I am feeling the need to make again.

MrsSchadenfreude · 29/04/2012 21:51

BTM - one of the teachers coming is my pizza and red wine friend. I don't think it is a regular thing to do, invite the teachers over for some nosh. But they all bit my hand off when I suggested it. Grin Sadly Lovely Math(s) Teacher is leaving this year. I had high hopes for him being my new GBF, but it looks as if it is not to be.

YANBU about the sleepovers, by the way. I hate them. DD has been to her BFF's for sleepovers so often now, and BFF has only been here twice, that I shall feel obliged to invite her over again shortly. She is no trouble, but I like my weekends to myself - if I want to bake cakes in the kitchen clad only in T shirt and knickers, I can...but not if she is here.

Kitten has started peeing in the bath - any suggestions on how to stop this?

motherinferior · 29/04/2012 21:52

Both mine had sleepovers last night; DD1 had a friend here and DD2 went to her best friend's (BF confusingly has same name as DD1 too). They have both been knackered and horrid today.

MrsSchadenfreude · 29/04/2012 22:04

DD2 has what appears to be a bed sore on her elbow, caused, no doubt, for her having spent most of the past two weeks lying in her bed propped up on said elbow reading or on t'internet. I only managed two days off - one of those days we went shopping and to the cinema and the other we went to Disneyland. Bit crap really, but they have 10 weeks off in the summer and I am hoping to take most of my leave then.

CointreauVersial · 29/04/2012 22:55

MrsS - surely if you maintain a couple of inches of ice-cold water in the bathtub the kitten will be dissuaded from peeing in it (or at least get a nasty surprise).

I'm sober, by the way; just had a virtuous cup of Redbush.

bigTillyMint · 30/04/2012 18:34

Just had a bizarre email and then ensuing web-conversation with O2 about the smartphone I ordered - they sent me an email saying that my order had not completed their validation processConfused Apparently the phone is out of stock and I have to ring them to find out when it will be in stock and organise deliveryHmm Not very impressed with their customer service, and very disappointed that I have to wait till when???

MrsSchadenfreude · 30/04/2012 19:45

Well I spent another afternoon in the waiting room of yet another dentist type person, and left 100 euros later (this is after 610 euros at the orthodontist and 481 at the vet this month), with an invoice (!) for 300 euros to remove DD1's impacted tooth, but not expose the second tooth, as he the periodontist doesn't think this needs doing (the orthodontist does) - he said that we will remove the tooth and then see if the second tooth rights itself and comes down where it is supposed to (he is confident that it will) and if it doesn't then, he can, at vast expense, and not covered by French social security, expose the second tooth.

My bank balance is looking rather unwell at the moment and I rather yearn for the NHS where at least all dental trickery is done in the same place, and I don't have to traipse round Paris to get various things done. And it doesn't cost me an eyewatering amount every time I walk through the door, either.

My dental French is coming on a treat, as is my vet French. I am quite au fait with the parts of the brace, and which bit has broken this time, the various teeth and their names, and can also say, please worm my cat and fit a microchip.

motherinferior · 30/04/2012 19:53

Our boiler now seems to have died.

bigTillyMint · 30/04/2012 19:57

Oh dear! It looks like we are all having sorely trying days!

MI, at least it is a bit warmer this week. I have the number for a fab plumber if you need one?

MrsS, DD is begging to get a brace. The dentist says she doesn't "need" one and definitely wouldn't qualify on the NHS. It is due to the fact that she still sucks her thumbHmm
