How to be groomed?

blobtobetter · 14/02/2012 21:03

Basically I look like a scruff! I don't have any set routine so forget sometimes to do my eyebrows until the are hideous werewolflike messy and my nails are ignored. My skin is atrocious too. I just never seem to be able to look groomed and pretty!!

Do you have a daily / weekly / monthly grooming routine?

How much time do you spend on your looks?

I am thinking that professional help might be needed! Tempted by HD Brows but they would look wrong if the rest of me is well a mess.

I have just never been organised about all this beauty stuff. It is like everyone else was taken into a secret "how to be groomed" lesson that I missed out on. Come to think of it, I missed the "how to style your hair" and "how to dress so you don't look like you got dressed in the dark.... in your Nan's wardrobe" lessons too!

Mrs M my friend, I sense you are anti facial wipes. Please explain (no science needed don't worry)

mosschops30 · 28/02/2012 19:01

kellamity you couldve saved a fortune using amazon or ebay. Boots is seriously pricey for nail envy (not much difference in the LD nail files though).

Vaseline Intensive care (yellow one) is the best moisturser in the world, its cheap, it smells nice and you can buy it from anywhere, rubs in easily and still leaves my skin feeling silky soft even though ive used it for years. Doesnt matter what else i try i always come back to this

valiumredhead · 28/02/2012 19:02

I like unscented Palmer's Coco Butter - fab stuff!

drywhiteplease · 28/02/2012 19:15

Interesting about Pantene...I stopped using it because it made my hair look greasy...eek.now use anything on offer and Aussie 3 min once a week.

Day two of nail envy...

CheerfulYank · 28/02/2012 19:17

Will someone buy some BD primer and put it one ebay for me?!

ClaraDeLaNoche · 28/02/2012 19:20

Cheerful Yank am going to Tescos tomorrow, will get you one. PM me and will give you my email

CheerfulYank · 28/02/2012 19:27

THANK YOU! Will pm you immediately. :)

LinzerTorte · 28/02/2012 19:38

Just had a look on the Tesco website for the BD Primer, but it's out of stock - wonder whether that's as a result of this thread. Grin It's 3 for 2 on BD products atm as well.

CagneyNLacey · 28/02/2012 19:47

I love this thread! Currently sporting nice nails and hair for thefirst time in a long time thanks to you all.

Have just bought BD primer off ebay (as sold out in tesco), is it ok to use primer with tinted moisturiser though?? Am useless withfoundation and haven't worn it for years.

Shenanagins · 28/02/2012 20:14

kellamity whereabouts in boots did you find the coconut oil and what was the brand. Was in their today looking for it and failed miserably!

However this whole post spurred me on and i put a face mask on this morning, straightened hair and put on cuticle cream. Was looking ok whilst out until it started to rain and i didn't have a brolly!

RobinSparkles · 28/02/2012 22:35

Shenanigans they sell the tubs of coconut oil in Tesco. It's in the cooking oils aisle and it's about £6.50.

RobinSparkles · 28/02/2012 22:39

Sorry I spelled your name wrong Shenanagins Blush

I have to say that I've been using my Simple face wash, toner and moisturiser and my skin feels lovely! When I get up in the morning it looks Dewey. Usually I look like I've been in a fight (sleepless nights with a one year old don't do anything for the beautification process) so an improvement I think!

mrsmartin · 28/02/2012 22:48

clara I'm pretty much anti most 1step cleansers. Alot of wipes have alcohol in them and pretty much all of them leave a residue on your face. And they don't tend to have any added skincare benefits. If they work for someone and they are happy with them thrn fair enough...but everyone I know who uses them has quite a dull complexion at best. I think good skin starts with thorough cleansing...though I do have some limited edition decleor cleansing pads that are a bit magic...I keep them for when I go camping but would never replace proper cleansing with face wipes full time.

Was in Tesco today and BD primer has been sold out in my local store (big 24hr one) for over a week now...ah the force of Mumsnet is strong Grin

Drywhite...I just do 2 coats of nail envy on day one, then one coat every other day for a week...I find everyday builds the formula too thick on the nail...

mrsmartin · 28/02/2012 22:55

Valium...I have a couple of the tesco bd crystal files and they are a good size and do a good job...still don't think they are as special as the LD ones though (I use the BD ones in my Handbags for emergencies- which I never actually have Hmm but good for handing out to others) and the LD one at home. I too am a sucker for the aluminium case and also that it is guaranteed for 25years (mine says lifetime but the lawyers made him change the wording last year!).

re coconut oil...someone said they do bottles for £1 in the world foods aisles.

Shenanagins · 29/02/2012 00:01

robinsparkles and MrsMartin thanks! Lets hope my tesco has both the oil and primer - poor oh hasn't a clue what is about to hit when he does the weekly shop!

CheerfulYank · 29/02/2012 00:06

Okey dokey. :)

I have just placed (for me) a massive drugstore.com order, getting foundation, a flat iron, styling cream, and some Simple face wash.

I've had a rough day and this makes me feel happy. :o Going to take a long bath now, moisturize, and polish fingers and toes. Bliss!

valiumredhead · 29/02/2012 08:28

Re the BD PRIMER - if you look on the Tesco website it is ALWAYS out of stock or not available, I can never order it when I do my weekly shop. It's something you need to go to the store for.

LinzerTorte · 29/02/2012 08:41

Unfortunately that's not an option for me valium, as I live in Austria - I was hoping to be able to order some to have it sent to my parents' (no Tesco anywhere near them, so I can't send them to buy any either).

mosschops30 · 29/02/2012 09:55

linzer if you pm me im sure i can get you some and send it on Smile. I think its still 3 for 2 which minght be worth it.

I have to agree with mrsm since ive stopped using facewipes and have cleansed and toned properly i have noticed how much better i look in the morning, i still wouldnt go out without makeup but i do look less scary! Smile
cant wait for another pamper night on friday of hair mask, exfoliator etc

LinzerTorte · 29/02/2012 10:16

Ooh, that would be wonderful mosschops. I'll PM you. Smile

AvaMaria · 29/02/2012 14:12

I love this thread., so much lovely advice and you have all inspired me to sort out my nails, the rest of me is groomed, but my nails are terrible.

I am going to order a LD file from amazon and the nails Inc Kensington caviar top and base coats. But can anyone recommend a good cuticle oil? Which shal I go for?

Kellamity · 29/02/2012 14:15

I had to ask for help in Boots for the coconut oil. Think it was with the body moisturisers. It's Boots own brand.

TwllBach · 29/02/2012 14:45

This thread is brilliant Grin

This sort of thing is something that I really struggle to hold in my head though - I read all the posts and think "BD primer...simple face wash..." and then by the time I've got up to get a drink I have forgotten Blush

SO
I want something to take my make up off at the end of the day. Simple wipes, yes?
I want a body (not face) moisturiser with a bit of a tint. Someone mentioned that the dove one was nice?
I also want something to keep my hair looking shiny throughout the day, as it goes a bit lacklustre as the day wears on. I can't always access my hair brush. I've read that l'oreal mythic oil works well (on here) is that the one that I just comb through my hair? I am intrigued by coconut oil but can't bear the thought of wearing it over night.

I get my mum to send me up moisturiser for my face. She gets it from Aldi and I think it is part of the Acura range. It's worked wonders on my face in the six months that I've been using it

ClaraDeLaNoche · 29/02/2012 14:51

Thanks Mrs M. I do know that some people refer to facial wipes as slut wipes. So am going to cleanse properly!

No luck with BD Primer today but have got a hot tip... Can't tell you in case you rush down and buy them all.

ClaraDeLaNoche · 29/02/2012 14:54

Emm what cleanser do I use please? Ta muchly.
